Great video! Some people don't understand that the reason that Eddie influenced so many guitarists is that he was so original and outside of the box. It was the notes and chords that he chose and the order and spacing he put in between them. I think a lot of modern shredders don't understand that sometimes the most important notes are the ones you don't play.✌️
I learned some of these chord shapes from VH when I was starting out, and it expanded my pop/rock musical vocabulary immensely at the time. This is 5 minutes that can really help out new players.
Great lessons Rob. Most tutorials do not mention following the root note train of thought pattern like you often do. I see that you like many of us find Eddie inescapable to use for wisdom. I have been in a Van Halen learning phase since Oct.6 2020 and still totally digging it. You rock man.
Cool little mini-lesson, and so true. Edward was absolutely amazing, and innovative. No one ever sounded anything like him when he broke loose.... and no one ever has since then. Tens of thousands of great players out there. But to write the music, and put down what that guy did? Wow. It's utterly astounding if you think about it. And these are some of his favorite chord shapes!
Very cool tips, Robert! Also notice that the second (and third chord shapes) of the first riff are just the "C cowboy chord" slid up one (and two) steps, with the low root dropped off. Concentrating on just the D, G, and B strings make it seem 'new'. 😉 And the sus4 is SUCH a cool way to add a little color. 80's hair metal bands used it a LOT!
Great video robert , ive played for years on years but never was one of those guys who would think of every root note or where i was at every moment, i played mainly by ear so at 50 decided before i die i wanted to learn some theory and in this early stage of that plan the idea of moving that inverted D down to each chord and knowing the root note to signify chord was awesome for me thanks bro great job
Speaking of sounding like eddie. The part you played at 2:42 sounds exactly like what eddie plays in the live version of somebody get me a doctor after the breakdown
best of both worlds, aint talking about love, runaround and dream is over and top of the world is all basically the same stuff too. dude was a genius with like 4 chords
I usually play Panama when I want to play Dance the Night Away and the other way around. Once I saw both songs started with the same couple of shapes I just couldn't unsee it xD
Great video Rob! 🎸🎶🤘🎦 I haven't read this anywhere, maybe you or the others on here already know - but I think that Eddie uses his piano knowledge (chord inversions, use of suspended chds, etc) As he formed his own guitar style. That is so awesome...!!! Thnx again Keep Rawkn 🎶🤘🎸
I do not sound like Eddie Van Halen when I play guitar, but I did learn the fretboard because of him and his chord shapes and how he was innovative across it
I've been watching your Van Halen videos non stop lately. You know, what's funny is that when I was a kid and had no clue how to really play guitar, I learned a lot of stuff like tapping and stuff on my own. It was almost the only way I was able even to play the thing at all, but I ended up giving it up back then because I thought to myself that I wasn't really playing guitar. I picked it up years later and play now, but at the time, I was like 10 or 11 at the time and I always thought if I went up on stage and started doing that stuff, everyone in the audience would know what I was doing and boo me off stage. I'm learning all the evh I can right now. One day. I think I created a technique yesterday. Idk if anyone else has done it. Definitely haven't seen it myself before. I would tell you, but I don't want your next video to be you getting a billion views using my new moves. But fr, I appreciate your videos very much! Really does help speed some things up. Keep up the awesome work!
This actually makes me feel better about my own playing knowing Eddie is just playing the same chords in different ways. That's seems to be all I do these days😂
These chord shapes are in so many famous songs... Hammer to Fall by Queen - the whole song is based on this riff. Crazy train by Ozzy - part of the guitar riff for the verse
That A to D position is so great! The Doobie Brothers used this a lot too. Check out the opening riff from Long Train Running, or the stuff going on in Listen to the Music.
Thank you for the video and it would be helpful if you could do more videos like this with different simple formations on the guitar would be much appreciated and I would watch all of them!
Robert, isn't that the basis for the whole CAGED system?; I figured out (back when I was playing in the 80s) that I could move those chords around the neck, and play chords anywhere. I had never heard of CAGED until I started back playing a couple years ago. Of course, since it works with Major chords, it also works with minor, 7th, 9th chords, etc. Now I know how to put them together, and to go right to them w/o having to count up from the nut to figure out which chord it is, since I actually learned CAGED. But thanks for that!
Hey Robert, great 👍 vid. It's like u read my mind I was just thinking a day ago that I needed some shapes to use that didn't rely on either e strings !!!
@@RobertBakerGuitar same old, still grinding away. I like that vid about "grocery store" guitars... I have one 😂. It's terrible, would definitely make a beginning guitarist not want to play anymore. Also got a 100 dollar start knock off. (No name on the head) and was surprised as hell that it wasn't a waste. Probably gonna give it to a nephew or something. Other than that just trying to keep rocking. Thanks again for making such great vids 🪨🎸
He also used those first shapes you showed heavily in Best of Both Worlds... The man had swing and he could take the same notes and chords from one song and use them in another and they would be completely different songs.
All of those sus chords help fill out the sonic palette. With only one guitarist in the band (usually) that was pretty important to their overall sound!

Exactly!
Could not of said any better my self.
Boom! 💥 You just nailed it!
”Sometines the most important notes are the ones you don’t play” - that’s an interesting statement, i agree 👍
YOU ARE RIGHT SOMETIMES YOU SAY MORE WITH LESS!🎸🎼🎶🎶🎶👍✌️😎😉
I've been learning 5150 for the past few days. It's such a cool and modern sound. Eddie was a pioneer.
It's one of those songs that gives me chills every time. It's truly timeless, it will be just as impressive in 2086 as it was in 1986, and is today
All those little embellishments and details Eddie added here and there keep each song exciting and unique, Thanks for the EVH stuff Robert!

Dance the Night Away was such an eye opener for me
I was litterally just having this song stuck in my head
Coolest lesson I’ve bumped into in a long time. And easy enough for a chucker like me. Love it! 🤘

EVH for life man. Ending it bluesy EVH style was hot.
VanHalen1 is and always be a masterpiece. Blew me away in the 70s and every time I hear it.
The song 5150 is the best thing they ever put out during the Hagar era. It's such a perfect song.

Another great lesson, I thoroughly enjoy all of your lessons. Great job!
BEST lesson I have seen anywhere in quite a while and I have been playing a looong time.
Really cracked Eddie’s tone here, too!

Thanks for the simple Eddie Van Halen chords every beginner needs. Greatly appreciated!!!
Keep this type of lesson coming, I am at last getting over my phobia about trying to learn anything Van Halen.
Learned those chords listening to Brian May. He uses those shapes all the time also. We Will Rock You, Hammer to Fall, so many.
Speaking of sounding like eddie. The part you played at 2:42 sounds exactly like what eddie plays in the live version of somebody get me a doctor after the breakdown
As usual, your tutorial is wonderful and, your hair is PERFECT!
These are so great and even help me. Which is a low bar but I stand by the spirit of my point. 🎸🤘🏻🤓
Thanks, Robert - it's always the "Ah Ha!" moments that keep me moving forward after 52 years of playing.
Great information. The king will never be forgotten .
Eddie will always be the king
Panama has the best chords ever it’s a perfect song
how so
best of both worlds, aint talking about love, runaround and dream is over and top of the world is all basically the same stuff too. dude was a genius with like 4 chords

Thank you sir, you just knocked my playing up a significant notch. Keep em' coming!
Your vids are very easy to follow. You're a good teacher man. Thanks for all of the EVH style lessons.
Great little eye opener....And no wasted time...Love it..
Dang I wasted all that time and it's a bot!!
I do not sound like Eddie Van Halen when I play guitar, but I did learn the fretboard because of him and his chord shapes and how he was innovative across it
Thank you again, Robert! This is why I always check in to see what you’re teaching. Awesome insight and examples

Angus uses the inversion on let's get it up. Love it up and down the neck!! 🎸👍🎸
Robert what an crazy good lesson. I have to check this out on my guitar. I am so excited and motivated! Thank you so much!! ❤
Another AWESOME, AMAZING EVH lesson! 🤘🤘
Dude you constantly kill it, thanks for the video lessons
Thank you, great lesson. Interestingly, my novice play led me down the same road; I use sliding shapes all of the time.
You really are a good teacher and player! Thx
Love all your EVH content, Robert! Keep up the great work.
Great stuff. Love these Eddie lessons - have subscribed. More of these please!
Great lesson, have some fun trying this, thanks Robert
This actually makes me feel better about my own playing knowing Eddie is just playing the same chords in different ways. That's seems to be all I do these days😂
Great lesson many thanks 👍
This was awesome. So simple and so useful. Thank you.
I am mainly a fan of EVHs rhythm playing, great lead guitarist, awesome rhythm guitarist.
gotta tune that b string down a tiny bit to have it all sound right
Excellent Video! Growing up a massive Eddie Van Halen fan I remember the light bulb moment when i realized this.
These chord shapes are in so many famous songs...
Hammer to Fall by Queen - the whole song is based on this riff.
Crazy train by Ozzy - part of the guitar riff for the verse
Basically every famous 80s hair metal riff…Round n Round, Lay It Down, Kickstart my Heart, just to name a few.
Damn Rob you're the first person I've ever heard come out and tell it exactly how it is🤘 son I am proud of you
That’s pretty amazing. Such great music made with such simplicity.
Trying to message. Hope it went through

Which chords did EVH use? All of them & then some.
Great video! (Could be even better with some chord boxes on the screen)
Let me learn these on that Tele you’re giving away! 🙏🏻
