  • When it comes to swarms, there’s so much to talk about. This video is like the tip of the iceberg, but you gotta start somewhere. I discuss the swarm urge for bees kept in insulated horizontal hives, early vs late season swarms along with the pros and cons of swarming at different times in the year.

I agree with you on insulated hives swarming early. Thanks for sharing

Learned a lot, you have great command of your subject. I didn't know about early vs late swarming, and i love the Layens hives and like to see the different versions. I think the cover boards approach can help give the bees the sense that they are not disturbed even while a hive inspection is ongoing... love your view hive too. I love the natural "follow the bees' lead, no need to wring out every drop of honey"... thanks, cheers.

I noticed the wax moth damage to your box. I lost two hives over winter/spring to wax moths. Thank you very much for sharing from your years of experience.

Yeah - this box was sitting empty for a couple years and I just got to cleaning up the wax moth damage about 2 months ago. They really dig into the wood and mess things up. It's still good after you clean up, and the bees like the textured surface to crawl on, so it's not a total loss I suppose. Thanks again for watchng!

    Thank you for sharing.
Why do you dump the bees left in the trap on the ground? Why not dump them right in the new hive?

    Hello,
Thanks for sharing these experiences with us. I'm wondering if there is a reason why you bumped the remaining bees outside the hive instead of doing it inside the hive ?

I really like your videos but in this video you made a big mistake: you had your observational hive next you for a long time and you never showed us a single thing in it.

You are absolutely right - I'm putting together footage for a part 2 and I will include the before / after look of the O-Hive. I agree, that I should have done that in part 1, so thanks for bearing with me:). I'm tied up till early July, so it's coming as soon as I get the editing done. Have a great day and thanks agin for your input!
