Great video Hillary. People think their kids remember expensive things - THEY DONT - T I M E is invaluable. We couldn’t afford to do all the fun things so we improvised. Sadly that was a different generation that enjoyed the anticipation. Now kids want it all and they want it right now, and it isn’t their fault. They’ve been overindulged by parents who thought giving them more would make them HAPPIER when they were already happy. Now the horse is out of the gate and doesn’t want back in.
@@nangel270, That’s not true of all kids these days. It is unfair to lump everyone into that way of being. There are a lot of families who are not like that.
I typically start decorating a few weeks before Christmas, as it brings joy and excitement to the shortening winter days. Traditionally though, people would hold off on decorating until Christmas Eve, or Christmas Day, as that’s when the Christmas season actually began. Advent was a quiet & contemplative season of anticipation, and when Christmas came, the celebrating (along with decorations) finally began, and lasted til Epiphany!
Each year when I buy my planner, I flip to December and write this phrase to remind me. - You can do it all, but you can not do it all well. This helps me to really be intentional about what I say yes to. Love the message of your video.
It’s beautiful! And that’s how I think Christmas should be. Peaceful and warm with Christ as our focus! I feel so rested when I watch your videos.. sounds crazy I’m sure but. Your routine is peaceful! And that makes for a calm household for all!!
Thank you for sharing such a beautiful video. I had so many plans for Christmas this year. I was so excited to have a very special Christmas for my husband and I. My husband passed away on the 15th of November. My desire to celebrate is gone. He was the love of my life. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home and enjoy the holidays with your precious family. Thank you for being a blessing!!
I love all the things you do like to do at Christmas and totally agree with all the things you don’t do. Your children are going to have wonderful memories of their childhood Christmas celebrations. Your home looks lovely and very elegant for Christmas. ❤️
Here in Southern California , many moms need their various trendy theme trees in various sizes through their home., a bit "extra". I have one large tree that is a mish mash of all the ornaments made by kids, from special trips , etc. A tree of memories💕
Your home looks lovely. I have over the years had a very simple Christmas. My tree is the star of our home decor. All the decorations have a story, meaning they are very dear to me. As my children grew and made their own homes I gave them ornaments that they had made or the ones I got them each year. I love the simple abundance. Your "We don't do" list sounds like mine did decades ago. I thank you for your cookie recipes that you shared. I've decided that I am going to be the "Come bake with Nana" Grandmother this year. I think it will be fun. One thing that I have done for decades is make homemade sauce and lasagnas for my Children and their family so one night during the busy week during Christmas they do not have to worry about cooking a meal. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
The house looks lovely so far. You do such a wonderful job of decorating in the old world style! We also did not celebrate Santa Claus, but St. Nick. We had a book that explained who St. Nick was. We also limited our boys two three gifts each to represent how many gifts the Wise men brought Jesus. Something they needed, something they wanted, and something small. We also participated in Samaritan's Shoe Box giving. The boys really enjoyed picking out gifts for their shoe boxes. I really wanted our sons to think about others besides themselves during the Holiday season. They are grown men now and still embrace these traditions with their own families. Be blessed dear Hilary!🌲💗
I love how you shared what you do and also what you don’t do during this season. I’d love more videos like that in the future for other seasons/holidays of what you choose to prioritize and what you choose to skip.
You have the perfect home for Christmas decorations, fireplace, mantel, placement of the tree, bookshelves, it all works so well. Your decor is lovely, just enough without being crowded. Your home is so cozy. Traditions make for great memories. I really love your hallway mirror, it's Beautiful! Like the name tags on the socks, are they Amazon?
Hillary, I also use my Christmas decorations over and over again. That holds so many cherished memories in my family. All of us kids would be looking for our favorite ornament from years passed. That to me was part of the tradition of Christmas. I may use a different theme from year to year by picking one thing to change the look of my tree. One year poinsettia, then ribbon, this year candles. Your Christmas cookie video inspired me to start early and I have. Thanks for all your lovely ideas.
That's the Key! Being Prepared, and having less stress, knowing you are Prepared! I think that is why I also like to get a head start on everything Christmas...the anticipation it always brought, to my kids, when they were young, was so joyful to watch! All that LeadUp was almost more fun for them, that the 25th! Life can get so busy with this time of year, and little kids...that to leave everything to the last day/last minute...just doesn't work!
I appreciate that you listed the things you don’t engage in as a family. I think you are wise in reusing your decorations from previous years . This is what creates your children’s memories. I know you find as I do treasures from thrift stores to add that little extra special touch . Merry Christmas as you once again are drawn to the stable and Gods redemptive plan
I always enjoy watching your Christmas decor year after year. It’s nice to hear the traditions we all have made with our families or remember as children. I grew up not seeing Santa at the mall, but we took our daughter every year. I grew up decorating our tree December 1st but I like you enjoy putting ours up in November to enjoy it longer. My daughter is 16 and she looks forward to the decorating her tree, putting out our village, hot chocolate, Christmas movies, baking for the holidays, driving to see Christmas lights, she remembers the simple things she grew up doing and looks forward to them every year. 🥰 Thank you for sharing your story with us Hilary.
Thank you so much for such a lovely Christmas decorating video. Your style is so comfortable, as I'm such a traditionalist myself. You're absolutely right; these days calendars can become so full so quickly that the holiday feels rushed, over with and leaving everyone feeling they've been truly run over by a reindeer! It's difficult to find that peaceful place where one can enjoy Christmas, not feel as though they're simply glad they've survived a bad accident.
I agree, rushing around and feeling frustrated, like you're lagging behind your to-do list, is no way to enjoy the season. I've been there. Starting early helps me to slow down and enjoy each step
I just love your Christmas decorating ☺️. Last year we started decorating a few days before Thanksgiving, after always doing it the weekend after. And I love it 😊. As I get older, I feel like Christmas goes by faster. So doing it a little earlier gives us more time to enjoy it ☺️🎄. Growing up our tree wasn’t put up until Christmas Eve🎄. Your home is looking so beautiful for Christmas. Have a wonderful day 😊🕊️.
Your home is lovely and you have such a gracious approach to life. I love seeing you put out the Christmas storybooks each year. That brings back such sweet memories of reading our own Christmas books with our two daughters in the Nineties. 💕 It’s interesting how family traditions change over the years. Growing up in the late Sixties and Seventies, my family decorated the (real) tree on the Saturday before Christmas. We all pitched in and loved being together. I don’t recall there being much Christmas room decor like we have now. I’ve been a pastor’s wife for thirty years and I learned that it made my December much less stressful if I decorated at home either prior to the swirl of practices and Christmas events or in the middle of the month when things hit a mid-December lull. Many times, I put out the house decor on Dec 1st or the first snow day - whichever comes first- and then I put up the tree whenever the mood strikes me. Time has taught me to not lock myself into a rigid schedule and to just do what works for me and my family at the time. Sending you my very best wishes for a blessed Christmas season with your precious family!
Thank you for sharing. I love the Christmas Stockings with wire names. And the gold mistletoe on your bed frame. And the tartan ribbon around Abraham Lincoln's neck. 😊
Your house is always beautiful. This video has made me want to do a more natural minimalist style of decorating for Christmas. I’m over all the knickknack decor that has to constantly be brought out and put away. After your video, I feel less is more and absolutely festive.🎄❤️
When our boys were little i bought Advent calendars at our local Christian book store. No chocolate but the calendar was a Christmas story picture snd the little doors had another corresponding picture inside. We only have two kids so they just took turns. There was also and Advent devotional to read every night to go with the calendar.
Wow Sweetie I’ve been doing operation Christmas child forever, I had no idea you did that….. we never had matching pjs / or even yearly pictures/ no chocolate advent calendar…. But since I had my girl 19 years apart from my son for her I made an advent calendar for just the first 12 days of December. I would put small items she could use and needed during the cold season like chap stick, those halo oranges, a new pencil for school, just tiny things since it was just her and I……… loved hearing this I never cut a real tree it was just too much for a single woman. I did get them a new ornament every year. Now they have them for their trees.
Your list of don'ts is very similar to ours with the exception of holiday candles and soaps. I love those smelly things 😂🌲 We always do our church Angel Tree. I love giving this time of year. I decorate for Christmas in our bedroom before Thanksgiving and the day after Thanksgiving I do the rest of the house. Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃❤️
I love your decor style in general and Christmas is no different❤ We decorate after Thanksgiving and since we are Catholic, we enjoy our decorations through Epiphany. We include an Advent wreath and light the candles at dinner through the Advent season as well. I just love an entire season leading up to the greatest gift of all🙏🏻❤️ It’s the day before Thanksgiving as I write this. Have a great thanksgiving and may God continue to bless your family😊
ALL of my shopping is finished 👍🏻. I will start wrapping some each day until finished. I don’t decorate until December because I am retired and have lots of time. Our family gathering here is the Saturday or Sunday between 12/25 - 1/1……everyone is relaxed and it extends the celebration until the New Year…..I spend Advent concentrating on the “reason for the season” and counting my blessings ❤️
I have a trash bag full of bulbs Im taking to Thanksgiving.I put lots in trash. My nephews wife is donating bulbs to the elementary. We always take grandkids to the parade. They have many grandparents due to inlaws divorce plus great grandparents..so the kids get plenty of memorable outtings.I enjoyed your list of what ya dont do..
Having special traditions and decorations at are so meaningful at Christmas time. I miss when my daughters’ were growing up and seeing their excitement as we decorated the tree. All of our b-days are in Dec. so I was mindful to keep that separate and special. No Christmas wrap on b-day gifts haha. I decorate right after Thanksgiving, so we can enjoy that day and the Autumn season to its fullest. A trick I’ve used for years to achieve a real Christmas tree scent with our artificial tree is to insert discarded tree branches that I get (for free) at Christmas tree lots. They’re more than happy to have me take them, and I use them to decorate the front porch, in bowls with vintage ornaments in the living room, and of course placed among the branches of our beautiful fake tree. Smells like Christmas!
Hilary, I truly love your home, it's warm, cozy and you create memories with your children and not focus on getting the "newest" Christmas decor or "viral" Christmas tree. Thank you for sharing your home
I always LOVE your Christmas decorating. It’s so timeless and gorgeous. I really enjoyed hearing the different things you prioritize and what you don’t. We have a lot in common. ❤🎄 Your little reindeer garland in the kitchen is something I think about all year long, and I look forward to it every year 😂 I should just make one myself.
Sounds like your Christmas to do list is what the season is all about. Family and giving and Jesus! ALways love your simple touches. And , although I love art... I do miss that gorgeous arched mirror you use to have over the dresser nook in your bedroom It was pure old world charm to me.
Your Christmas decor and home is beautiful with really classy touches. I love the velvet ribbons. It’s good to see house decor simplified instead of over the top. 👏🏻✨🎄🇬🇧
I am surprised, but we have similar do's and don'ts for the Christmas season. Even though my children are older, and we now have grandchildren, these mindful lists continue. Our holidays have been memorable with who gets to put the angel on top of the tree.
We’re now in our sixties and are hosting each of our sons’ families, visiting at different times in the coming weeks. I’ll start decorating after Thanksgiving with several nativity sets throughout the house.
I really enjoyed this video. Our “don’t do list” is similar to yours. Our church has Wednesday evening advent services and of course Christmas Eve and Christmas morning services. I love doing advent devotions with our advent wreath daily.
Everything looks beautiful Hilary! 🎄I agree with all your do's and don't's. I've never bought an Advent calendar, seems like a waste of money. People are forgetting the reason for the season. We put everything up last weekend. I love enjoying the month of Christmas. Nothing like being cozy in the evenings in front of the Christmas tree with the pretty lights on. And gingerbread coffee in the mornings! I'm making your Andes mint cookies this year, can't wait!
Beautiful video. Love the message. We made a Christmas countdown poster when my kids were small. We had too many children to do Advent calenders. My kids liked decorating a poster board with the 1-25 countdown, then we had 2 stamps, a tree and a star. The kids took turns stamping the days right after dinner. We did it taking turns, youngest to oldest, so they knew whose turn it was. Then after they stamped it, my husband handed out Hershey kisses. Lol. I hadn't thought of this in a while. Mine are grown & flown 🖤
I plan to decorate the week after Thanksgiving! I don’t put up a tree, but I have a manger scene and other decor!! I love the Christmas season!! ❤🎁 🔔 🤶 Hugs from Michigan, Hilary!!
I love this! We just had unexpected car repairs, so we won't be spending as much on attractions like last year we went to Portsmith NH for the light up Christmas Parade and we went to Edaville in Carver- both of those were so fun! But, we missed some of our favorite no cost Christmas activities like riding around looking at Christmas lights and attending some of the village Christmas strolls. This year my youngest is in an acapella group so we will definitely be attending at least 3 strolls with her which is super exciting. I remember one year at my school we had these really innovative pastors that were able to efficiently fundraise for us to do this really great play called "Old Fashioned Christmas" and we got rented victorian costumes and everything! We sang pretty much everywhere in town it was so so fun so I am excited to see my daughter doing the same :)
I decorated 2 days before Halloween this year because I had surgery Oct 30th it’s been so nice to just have it up and done while I heal even if it was insane early to put up 😂
My kids always help me with all the Christmas things so early for me I like seeing red and green in your home I am not fond of neutral Christmas decor I added blue to Honor Israel this year
I like to decorate for Christmas after Thanksgiving. In recent decades, Thanksgiving seems to be getting pushed aside in favor of Halloween and Christmas. Also, some TH-camrs decorate super early, in early November, but then take everything down the day after Christmas because they'retired of seeing it. Our family always considered the Christmas season to be from Advent thru New Year's. That gives us plenty of time to enjoy our decorations, while still giving space for Thanksgiving, and still letting the kids (and me) enjoy the decorations awhile after Christmas. I have an Advent calendar that I love, but it doesn't have candy or anything, the counter just moves from day to day. I re-use decorations every year, and they have their special places to go. The grandkids know where each thing "belongs". I'm not opposed to getting something new, but then do I want that item more than what I already have? I love Nativity scenes, and have several. Christmas is my favorite holiday, and I love the warm, magical glow of decorations.
@@OldWorldHome I am very selective about adding to my Christmas movie list. This is one is such a kind movie, especially for children. Adults: Metropolitan, One True Thing, Trains Planes and Automobiles, Trading Places...New to me Christmas Charm bracelet, I think it's called.
It all looks so beautiful Hillary. I've known for a while that we share some of the same taste in style. I have that exact antique mirror, also the metal green house you put your vintage Christmas ornaments and some other items too. I know last year you mentioned your tree was a Balsam Hill. I've been wanting one but haven't decided on the type. I like yours, it's perfectly full and looks so real. Please let me know so I can order one like it. Thank you so much.God bless you and your family. :) Anna
I also use the same decorations each year but I do change up how I style them sometimes. I bought a new tree yesterday and it was a difficult process for me. I've had my other one for 28 years and loved it. I'm excited to see my new one decorated. Isn't there a story / meaning to decorating the tree on Christmas eve?
I’ve had the same tree for 25 years and just purchased a new one and feel the same as you 😢. The memories I have I putting up the same one for so long and I too use the same decorations and tweak each year or not. ☺️
Great video Hillary.

They’re more than happy to have me take them, and I use them to decorate the front porch, in bowls with vintage ornaments in the living room, and of course placed among the branches of our beautiful fake tree. Smells like Christmas!
Yes a great way to add that beautiful scent! Sometimes I like to just walk through the trees at Home Depot just to get my scent fix ;)
Hilary, I truly love your home, it's warm, cozy and you create memories with your children and not focus on getting the "newest" Christmas decor or "viral" Christmas tree. Thank you for sharing your home
Thanks so much Jen!
I loved the mirror there as well, but now I love seeing it daily in the entryway!
@@OldWorldHome I didn't notice it in the living room I guess. Its just such a beautiful piece.
Your Christmas decor and home is beautiful with really classy touches. I love the velvet ribbons. It’s good to see house decor simplified instead of over the top. 👏🏻✨🎄🇬🇧
So lovely 😊
Love the message and the beautiful touches of Christmas decorations. 🎄🥹
Love your home warm my heart❤❤
I am surprised, but we have similar do's and don'ts for the Christmas season. Even though my children are older, and we now have grandchildren, these mindful lists continue. Our holidays have been memorable with who gets to put the angel on top of the tree.
We’re now in our sixties and are hosting each of our sons’ families, visiting at different times in the coming weeks. I’ll start decorating after Thanksgiving with several nativity sets throughout the house.
Sounds lovely, have a great season!
Your home is beautiful! So warm and inviting!!
Ah thank you!
Beautiful decor
Such a cozy feeling indeed! Enjoy, they're addicting :)
Beautiful
Beautiful home ….happy thanksgiving 😊❤️
Happy Thanksgiving to you!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING Hillary, family, and fur baby. Thanks for sharing your heart. STTB
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!
🎄
Beautiful video. Love the message. We made a Christmas countdown poster when my kids were small. We had too many children to do Advent calenders. My kids liked decorating a poster board with the 1-25 countdown, then we had 2 stamps, a tree and a star. The kids took turns stamping the days right after dinner. We did it taking turns, youngest to oldest, so they knew whose turn it was. Then after they stamped it, my husband handed out Hershey kisses. Lol. I hadn't thought of this in a while. Mine are grown & flown 🖤
Aw that is so incredibly sweet, thank you for sharing!
Beautiful video, Hilary. 💓
I plan to decorate the week after Thanksgiving! I don’t put up a tree, but I have a manger scene and other decor!! I love the Christmas season!! ❤🎁 🔔 🤶 Hugs from Michigan, Hilary!!
Everything looks beautiful
Love your videos and the way you decorate for Christmas. Will you be doing vlogmas this year?
We shall see :)
Jesus is the reason for the season! ❤
Thanks for sharing, Hilary ❤️🎄
Sounds perfect Hilary....Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas coming!
Your home is lovely
Tfs, your house is beautiful !!
Lovely video 🇬🇧🇺🇸🌸🌸
Thanks for such a warm video. I sure needed it today ❤️☺️🎄🎁
God bless!
As always love your videos. This was so cozy and festive. This motivates me to decorate early and enjoy all the hard work and loveliness of Christmas
Beautiful! 💞🎁🎄
Your home is beautiful!
Thank you!
So beautiful!! I may just start decorating for Christmas today,
I love all the natural elements you add to your decor ❤
So inspirational ❤
That sounds wonderful, enjoy the strolls (and the stroll down memory lane ;)!
❤
Beautiful home and the focus on all the right things in my opinion. Wishing you and yours a very Happy Holiday Season! #jesusisthereasonfortheseason
Amen, blessings to you and yours!
I decorated 2 days before Halloween this year because I had surgery Oct 30th it’s been so nice to just have it up and done while I heal even if it was insane early to put up 😂
I hope you are doing well and feeling better.
And now you get to just enjoy it :) Hope you are recovering well!
My kids always help me with all the Christmas things so early for me I like seeing red and green in your home I am not fond of neutral Christmas decor I added blue to Honor Israel this year
I love your decorating style! So beautiful! I would love to know where you purchased the metal names for your stockings.
Thank you! They’re from Etsy, a shop called LeRusticChic 💛
Great Family Movie: Christmas For A Dollar
Never heard of it but thanks for the rec!

:) Anna
How neat! The tree was gifted to us from Balsam Hill, it is the Silverado Slim with Clear Lights
@@OldWorldHome Thank you!
Love this! @Hilary can you share you diy cold remedy concoction?
Lemon juice, raw honey, and tequila. I’ll also grate in a clove of garlic or some ginger if I have it 💛
Thank you Hilary! Doing that this morning ❤
Your home is always so lovely Hilary. I love your tree collar; where did you get it?
Thank you! It was from Balsam Hill years ago
@colorcrayon54 Aldi has them for $14.99
I also use the same decorations each year but I do change up how I style them sometimes.
Aw that is difficult, but I hope you make many happy memories with the new one!
