The best wind direction is wind blowing from North to South. They tend to lay down the surf and swells. The only issue is if the winds are high 15mph or higher you'll have to fight it coming back to shore. Anything over 10 generally starts to chop up the water no matter the direction. I think 0-5 mph in any direction keeps the water mostly calm. Just gotta keep an eye on the forecast in case winds are supposed to pick up. The South winds tend to make the swells and surf bigger as the wind speed increases. Windfinder is a good app for wind and water conditions. Hopefully the info helps.
Nice video man. Glad you got a nice keeper for dinner! Too bad the mullet didn’t work out. I had the same issue with fish stealing the whole mullet. I had better luck with hookups after cutting them into smaller pieces. Tight lines!
Thanks again man! I did manage to cut a couple of them in half but my problem was I didn't have enough weight to get it down fast enough past those triggers. I'm ready to get back out there!
Great video, early in the video with the first two triggers and first snapper (unfortunately lost but love how you laughed it off) you were using a z-man paddle tale with a 1/2 ounce jig head. What size z-man paddle tail was that? Thanks
Great video friend. I was curious if u may have some info for right now? Im on okaloosa island with my old town pedal drive and lookin for fish. So far just baitfish. Havent been able to hook up with anything good yet. Ill be here for the next 10 days.
Thank you! Honestly I currently don't have much info, most of my trips have been short and in the bay. If I were to hit the water in that area I would try the sound around docks and flats with live bait, but I'm a lure guy so I would go with a 3" paddletail, twitch bait, and jerkbait. I would also venture to Destin harbor, Destin bridge and near the coast guard station. If you're looking to go offshore I would mostly troll for kings and Spanish mackerel, might get lucky and get on a blackfin tuna. The conditions are looking great Sunday, Monday , and Tuesday for offshore. You can also try the Navarre reefs for some action but mostly everything is out of season. If you're catching bait try putting that on a hook and throwing it in areas you think might be holding fish (structure is always a good start). Hopefully this helps.
@@oafishing thanks alot man. I appreciate u taking the time to respond. Ill definitely try the bridge. Ive caught some good kings off the beach over the years but wasnt real sure if they were here this time of year. Thanks again!!
Great video. I see you are fishing with a St. Croix mojo rod which model is it? I am new to saltwater fishing and looking for any good advice. Thank you
They are the Mojo Inshore models. I use a 7' Heavy Power Fast Action with a 5500 Penn Spinnfisher Reel and a 7' Medium Heady Fast Action with a Daiwa BG4000 Reel. I do know they redesigned the mojo inshore rods and are now a different color. I'm sure performance wise they are great. Some people are using the Ugly Stik Tiger series rods and have heard good feedback. Hopefully this is helpful. If you have Instagram at hit me up at oa_fishing_ on there if you have more questions, I'll gladly share whatever knowledge I have.
Looking at the forecast now with the projected winds I would say not safe, it’ll be very bumpy. The surf should be an easy launch because of the north winds but I’m sure it will be white capping beyond the surf. Recheck the forecast tomorrow and Saturday because things can change. If it ain’t to much trouble you can always pull up to the beach the day of and make the call while you’re actually looking at the water. I tried going yesterday and had to abort because of how bad the wind was.
Yes. I ran into another kayaker that uses an app on his phone to get over the reefs and does not have a fish finder. He caught his red snapper limit. I have the Navionics app that shows where the reefs are and your location..
It's a Humminbird 587ci HD. I've had this unit for about 7 years and am looking to upgrade to a Helix 5 DI with GPS, just haven't pulled the trigger on it.
The first red snapper I caught on the Daiwa BG 3000 with 15 lb PowerPro braid and the 2nd was on the Daiwa BG 4000 with 20 lb 832 Sufix braid. Both reels are on a 7’ Medium Heavy St Croix Mojo Inshore and the leader for both was 40 lb mono.
hey man Trigger fish is tastier than snapper, not sure what keeper size is for them but I'd be bagging that guy if I could lol. Edit: I didn't know trigger was out of season ignore that hahaha Also when we going out? the boat is always gassed up on the weekend :) Thinking about taking this Thursday off work since my Regular day off is Friday, the fishing those 2 days are supposed to be AWESOME according to the predictions on Salt Strong. If you have the time and want to do some drift fishing (The trolling motor is still very limited use due to the bad battery). I was going to try to hit some of the Eglin Flats early in the AM then head over to the rivers in the east to try and hook into some doormats.
It would be awesome if trigger and snapper seasons overlapped for even just a few days. I'll see what I can do, it's looking like my fishing windows will be shrinking even more here soon.
@@oafishing how far off the beach did you go for the snapper? I wouldn't mind trying an offshore run in the boat but I've gotta really plan with the weather and all that.
@@kurtjunkersfeld6074 I went a little over a mile straight line from the beach. There are reefs about 1-2 miles from the beach. The weather and the pass should be the biggest concerns. A day when the swells are a foot or less or flat will be best.
@@oafishing cool I think I know the ones you're talking about... There's pretty much only 2 reefs that close in... Hopefully the weather is nice one of these days to get out there and get me a snapper. It was interesting to see you snagging them on paddle tails 🤣 I'll have to give that a try.
@@kurtjunkersfeld6074 you know me, I just can’t put that paddletail away for long. Fish just love chewing on it. Go with an ounce or heavier. Even if the tail gets chewed off by triggers just keep working it like a fluke/jerk and the fish will still eat it
Jeeez, talk about quick weather changes. Be careful out there man. Nice snapper
Thanks man! I try and stay cautious with that weather because it does change quick around here.
Good job putting up a fight against that Red snapper!!
Thank you! They do put up a good fight!
Oh no!!!!! Bro that was all me. It would happen to me. That snapper popped right off! Way to keep it going after that blunder.
It happens to the best of us. Only the rain was gonna stop me that day lol
Nice job offshore!! Adapt and overcome to get those snappers 👍👍
Thank you! Definitely learned some lessons on this trip.
Great job, glad you got a couple of keepers, too bad about the one that got away.
Thanks! I'll be looking to get back out there and try not to let them get away lol
What is the best wind direction to see calm seas to fish for a kayak out there?

Also use a larger and wider lure to not catch trigger, since it won’t fit in their mouth

Great catches man! New subscriber here👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks!
Good stuff man. I need to head that way and get on some snapper! Aren’t many snapper within kayak distance over here in MS 😂
Thanks man! Come get some! Plenty of snapper out here 1-2 miles offshore.
Nice snappers, bro!
Thanks bro!
Great video. Those fish looks awesome. Everyone says they taste great.
Thanks! They fight good and taste good!
Awesome, bro!!

That was a 4” Zman Diezel Minnow.
Good decision to dump the ice, better safe than sorry.
Thanks man! Yeah, those measly 20 lbs do weigh that bow down a bit. I can cut through that water pretty good without the ice up front.

Is it possible to get on fish like this without a fish finder? We are coming back down in July and I wanted to give it a try.

I’ll give u a tip from a snapper fisher. Most snapper are down on the bottom or halfway down. Rare to see them 20 feet
I appreciate the tip!
'magically' came off the grips...😶
He definitely pulled a fast one🤣
