    "House-cat to 500lb in 2 years"...that's what a tiger cub does. That isn't a particularly fast growth rate for big cats. Of course, they don't live nearly as long.

    I've been reading The Shattered Land, the second book in the Eberron setting, and I got a kick out of the bit where a character gets served displacer beast meat at a tavern. He initially thinks his plate's empty until he notices strips of meat hovering a few inches away.

    Although I can't say it is the true answer, since it's just a conjecture, I can easily think of a simple explanation for the Displacer Beast to not use fangs or claws to attack.
    That is simply that it would reveal their actual location. The tentacles are long, it is hard to tell where the beast is precisely just being hit by tentacles. But a claw attack would reveal to you at least the precise position of the foreleg, and on top of that the general direction of the body, since a leg isn't prehensile like the tentacle. This is too much information about the beast's actual location. A bite attack would be even worse, revealing the location of its head right away.

    If only I knew all this beforehand, my party fought a displacer beast and when we were finished we found a displacer cub which we adopted. A session or two were spent finding milk for the cub but eventually we found out that the cub liked chocolate milk keg (a gag magic item that refilled infinitely) that our tabaxi sorcerer carried on him. If we had known this information idk what would've happened with the cub but I'm glad we didn't cause I love it.

    Maybe they don't use their fangs and claws beacause it would take them to get even closer to their enemy, making it easier for the foe to identify the real position of the displacer beast. And when they attack with their tentacles they can keep their distance and make quicker attacks since the tentacle has more manuverability than their other limbs.

    • @william0j

    • @bucknunley359

      Darkvision is black and white only (colors cannot be discerned). It does not allow characters to see anything that they could not see otherwise-invisible objects are still invisible, and illusions are still visible as what they seem to be. Likewise, darkvision subjects a creature to gaze attacks normally.

    • @megamanx466
      @megamanx466 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@william0j With darkvision you can ONLY see in black and white(and grey shades in between). This inherently probably means that the "cones" in your eyes are temporarily changed(if the spell) to "rods" making your vision many more times sensitive in the dark. You can not see color though with darkvision. In rare cases of whole population of real life humans, they actually have to over cook their food, because they can not see the pink of meat turn to a greyish. However, they like to stay up at night, because to them it's like day time(also, they perceive the sun as brighter than normal humans).

      @FormerRuling 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      6 intelligence in 5e is considered near-human level of intelligence; the creature would be expected to be able to plan advanced tactics and solve puzzles and possibly even comprehend human language if taught.
      I know RP wise it kind of breaks down when building a PC where if you roll for stats its possible to be like a lvl1 fighter with no schooling in their background and have like 12 intelligence which technically RP wise makes you a super genius.

    • @MarkLewis...
      @MarkLewis... 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@FormerRuling Not exactly... A human with the intelligence of "6" would equate to an IQ of only about 60-80 on that scale, where 100 (or 10-11 dnd) is average, 140 (12-15 dnd) is exceptional, and 160+ (16+) is genius. So, a feral or trained aggressive beast, with the intelligence of "6" would be an exceptionally intelligent animal. For a human of 6 intelligence the only puzzles they may solve , with significant difficulty, would be square-peg to square hole and round peg to round hole. This would be a very challenged human, but for a feral or trained beast, this would be quite exceptional... Relatively speaking.

      @MarkLewis... 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FormerRuling that's why I said "not exactly" which is a way of saying you were mostly correct. Factoids are not proven to be untrue, they are probably,but not necessarily untrue. A "Factoid" is.... "The Blue whale is the largest sea-creature." Why? Because we haven't explored all of the Earth's oceans. In fact, (pun intended) we've explored very little of our oceans, so the declaration "The Blue whale is the largest sea-creature." does not have enough evidence to be promoted to an actual "fact", though believed. (Even though most look at it as a fact and not a factoid.) However, the Theory of Evolution is an accepted proper fact, because though we don't know everything about Evolution, we have a tremendous amount of evidence to support the claim. This is the difference... Small but not unimportant.

    I’ve been playing this game since 2000 when I was 9 and am still playing today. I loved looking threw 3rd ed monster manuals and my dads 2ed books when I was younger. I would read more about dnd than I would ever read an assigned book in school. One of my favorite books was the 3rd ed dragonomicon. The art lore and design of the basic chromatic and metallic dragons all displayed in a handy little book. I would play as much as I could and would go with my pops to origins and gen con and would play organized play for many years before life would force me to be an adult and get a job causing me to pretty much do my own hombrew games with a select group of friends off and on when I could. Since I have discovered this channel it amazes me how little I had truly know about monsters and lore threw out the editions of dnd and the fact that you dig up all this research threw the 5 editions of this game to compose all this stats is something I appreciate very much. Your info helps me to be a better DM for my groups and inspires me to creat new stores with the knowledge you have gathered. So I guess what I’m trying to say is thank you. You help people like me out so much in our games and in general give out interesting videos on a hobby that I have loved for my whole life. Whatever the future holds for you my it be prosperous, peaceful and complete.

    The word "Factoid" means something that is not a fact, or more simply: "not fact".
    "an assumption or speculation that is reported and repeated so often that it becomes accepted as fact."

    • @druid_zephyrus
      @druid_zephyrus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah. I hate that people use that word so incorrectly. It is going to become the next "literally".
      We should get people saying fact-ito when they mean a side fact or small fact.

    • @MarkLewis...
      @MarkLewis... 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No... A little different... A "Factoid" is a brief synopsis of minutiae or mundane but believed true trivia. Jeopardy is a perfect microcosm of many "Factoids", just ask Cliff Claven. Though facts are proved, Factoids are accepted as true, and may or may not be true. All myths are Factoids, but not all Factoids are myths. Factoids are unreliable, not necessarily wrong. The "Post hoc ergo propter hoc" fallacy teaches us this.

    It actually makes a ton of sense that displacer beasts only attack with their tails - tail attacks are much easier to mask with displacement, since they're long and flowy, and thus the displacement can strike with them simultaneously and you would have hardly any idea which was the real beast. Whereas if it were to claw at you or bite you, it would become apparent very quickly which beast were real.

    One main reason it does not use it's claws and teeth in combat (though very effective and deadly when brought to bear) is due to its awareness of its own displacement ability. The tentacles allow the beast to strike from the location of its displaced image making the target believe the image is the actual beast. Like the old gag of reaching behind someone to tap them on the opposite shoulder while you appear on their other side.

    Interesting you showed artwork taken from the publishings of Black Destroyer/Voyage of the Space Beagle but didn't name it. If anyone wonders, displacer beasts are taken whole-sale from a A. E. van Vogt story. In it they find the Coeurl, and an Earth ship encounters this last surviving member of this once-intelligence race. It is described as looking like a giant black panther with tentacles coming from its shoulders (ending in suction cups), and its fore legs are twice as long as its hind legs. It feeds on the potassium in our bodies and has the ability to smash almost anything by touch, using resonate frequency generating organs in its tentacles. It's about as nasty a beast as what you will encounter in its D&D incarnation.

    Dnd story time!
    Recently, our party was investing a few murders around a town called Pav and we met one of these kittos! We suspected it was the murderer, but... My character felt something was strange when it warped into our place of stay, as it spoke like a child would and seemed rather young- And didn't attack until provoked. The elf wasn't sure if this creature was as vicious as the party seemed to believe, so...She did what she could!
    Thus, my elf tried to talk to it- Lulling it to sleep with her magik as to calm it down, which suceeded! Using the noise of a triangle, I managed to catch its attention. Unfortunately, a protective soldier pc attacked it while it was asleep, which...Made the beast scared and made it run away. My character bolted off in a mix of anger, sadness, and disappointment in her companion, since she had a gut feeling that the displacer beast wasn't the killer.
    The elf split from the party and decided to find whether her hunch was right, tracking down the beast with a locate object spell- As in one of the crime scenes, a musical triangle had been missing from its holder, and by tracking that, she found the displacer beast!
    It was quite wary of the elf, understandably, but let her into their lair to ask questions- I think this may have been because I only tried to make it levitate in the air, thus holding it still for a minute and have it sleep. No edlritch blasting here, folks!
    When she was looking about the room, er. Sort of, the elf is blind, has tremorsense, a large creature appeared. An abomination of displacer beast and human mangled together, crying in pain, as it breathed down her neck.
    Well, as implied- My elf is a warlock, and her patron is actually rather sweet and protective, a bit overly so at times, but he tries his best to be both a decent patron and good friend- After panicking at this gaint thing about to snap its maw on the elf and realizing he may not be able to fight this thing, her patron appeared to the party and got them to run to her aid.
    Thus, combat ensued. No one died! Woo!
    While the elf was wary around her party members, since they may attack the displacer beast, after investigating the paw of the abomination, she realized that the claws matched the ones they found at the scene-
    Meaning the displacer beast was innocent and was just looking for a replacement triangle- Since its last one was broke by the abomination.
    My and her gut was right! She was quite relieved at this.
    The displacer beast was asked a few questions about some things- And we found it was taken from its home and brought to a laboratory- Where it now lived. The elf. Did not think it was safe at the lab, not anymore, particularly since she had overheard the mayor/police department fantasy equivalent talking about a public image and how something would damage it.
    Either way.
    After a very cute moment of the displacer beast curling into the elf's lap, the session ended. I cannot wait until next Tuesday.
    Long story short-
    My timid, scribe elf, may have befriended an eldritch fey cat, which...Incredibly in character, her patron is an eldritch demon elf and she just...Does not care.
    Either that or I just befriend eldritch beings. Hm.

    I hadn't played D&D much at all since 2e when I was in high school in the early 90s. I jumped into 5e feet first, and ended up DMing after about three months as a PC. By the time one character (in a level 0 campaign start) decided to aim for being a ranger, I ended up homebrewing a new creature: the displacer rat.
    www.worldanvil.com/w/realmspace-and-beyond-darias/a/displacer-rat-article-1
    The player hunted for him forever, and he kept disappearing, he couldn't figure out how. When the ranger went to a local, higher level ranger, the mentor looked in surprise, "You've seen him too?" As soon as the words went out of my mouth, I devolved into the interaction from the movie Real Genius.
    Thus, Lazlo, the kinda OP displacer rat ranger pet ended up joining our party.
