I love the Sumo. It’s really good. Edge test shows it’s comparable to Mora 12c27. It needs to break in a little action wise but it’s solid, it feels great, performs great, easy to sharpen. Withstands days of sweat from Army FTXs. I love that knife.
Had the Gerber Sumo for quiet awhile now. Stick it in the pocket once in a blue moon when I need something that I don’t care if it gets beat up. I’ve enjoyed it being a relatively fidgety large knife. Finally found a deep carry clip for it on Etsy and that helped with me wanting to carry it at least a little now.
Man this is a really pretty looking knife, I do wish it had better steel but this might be "i just want it for the looks" purchase lol. This with D2 though would be a gnarly unit!
The only great Gerber that I've ever had was an late 80s early 90s LMF fixed blade.... I've never been impressed by anything Gerber has put since. I've seen how badly other people's have been and never regretted my decision.
Gerber is basically done. They can't compete with Kizer and Civivi and what you get for their prices. I just hope they don't start doing a price increase like everything else
The Gerber Savvy does look interesting to me (reminds me of the Benchmade 921 without the 2nd blade). But $200+ for them is just way too much with their track record over the last 15 to 20 years. Maybe if they prove themselves with their USA manufacturing on something a bit more affordable first, they could inch up to those price points.
That is the one I just asked Jerad about, yeah they crazy with that setup for $200. I’ll buy any Benchmade before I touched that. Also about 15 Spyderco’s.
Check out the savvy, sedulo, affinity, and slimsada. Gerber has improved a lot in recent years. Only bias’s from their bear grylls past over 10 years ago still linger with them. They are a completely different company now, and no one who worked to put the bear grylls stuff out works their today. They have a complete overhaul in most of their departments, particularly management. The sumo is a good knife, but not gerbers best current work. The knives above are great. The savvy is benchmade level quality, if not better. It and the sedulo have innovative washer designs.
They really missed an opportunity with this one. Could've been the poor man's Superfreek, but it's just another "meh" from Gerber. They're $70-75 here in Oz, but I'd happily pay $20 extra to get 14c or even $30-35 extra to get 154cm.
I really don’t get the hate for 7cr, I really doubt even an experienced knife guy like yourself could tell the difference between an equallly well heat treated 7cr vs 8cr in a blind test. The are so close chemically.
@@lindboknifeandtool I’ve got an 8cr spyderco tenacious, arguably one of the best 8crs you’ll find, I can sure as shit fell the difference between this and 154cm, s30v, d2, 1095, m390, s90v, Cpm cruwear. It’s not hard to tell the difference.

Only Gerbers I liked in the last 10 years that I can think of, are the Gator drop point in 154cm and the Fastball wharnie in S30V. But both are usually overpriced for what they are specially the Fastball unless it's on sale. I'm sure there are better ones out there now, I just don't have any interest after they pushing out so much trash.
Well I know what you mean about Gerber but I just got the USA Gerber Sedulo and so far I’ve been happy with it love to hear what you think of that if you get the chance to try it but there are definitely better knives for the price. Thanks for sharing bud
I bought a Gerber a few months ago when they came out with this new style I liked and thought it would be good for the price I was seriously let down in so many ways I should have taken it back since I bought it at Academy It came new with about 99% lockup, crooked blade and scratchy pivot I'll never make that mistake again There are so many better knives out there that are priced just right
My sumo is great but I strictly use it as a kitchen knife, can't ever get it super sharp but it's good for potatoes. Love the shape and design but would never carry it outside of the kitchen because of the steel
The HoBack Sumo tho 🤓🤓🤓🥳I love . Gerber did this with another design they made with the sub par blade steel . It looked great too . They ll see . People will buy this because it looks great and they have a bad rap lately . I think they’re still comfortable for being around so long and really don’t serve us nerds in the knife world. Luckily there s plenty of overseas companies who like to make the parts for these knives and it had me thinking they ve been making knives longer than us and probably has generations of knife makers in families and friends . Dudes that are into knives like them two sun and Kubey dudes get pretty creative , Reate, common , bestech , WE knives totally rock imo . I hate to admit it . I want a Medford infraction too and am saving for one so hopefully . If they say it’s $650 I guess maybe it’s $650 then , lol. I m kinda still shocked
How do they plan on having a chance against brands like ganzo with their axis locks. The only gerber worth getting is the gator, i don't even know if they still make it
Love the shape and size but the springs suck broke two different knives in two years because u can't find a spring to replace it with and also the steel needs an upgrade

Hey Neeve, I'm considering buying a throwing knife set from SOG, and I would like to know what, if any experience you have had with SOG and their products + warranty.
I'm not sure how much the sogs cost, but depending on how much experience you have, I would get some random ones. I picked up a set of three crappy one at a local gun shop for 10 bucks. They suck pretty hard, but you do forcefully hurl them at targets, so soft steel is ok. They don't hold an edge, so they don't always stick, but for pocket change I'm pleased. I do plan on leveling up at some point though 👍
I do not, but I've been carrying using and swinging tools since I was 5, and have been through and seen a lot of real life violence, I've been attacked with knives etc.. but no I don't train in anything specific however I do want to get together with shiv works one of these days to film and train
It's almost like they don't want to make a good knife 🤦🏽♂️ looks like it could've been decent but instead they chose 7cr with crooked grinds and not so great action .
Honestly when I look at a company as a whole I judge them by their best and worst made products. If the worst ones they make are still good then it's a company I don't mind putting my money towards because I know they care about their products not just about the bottom line. If Gerber could do that they might have a chance at restoring their image but as it stands they are pushing to much crap onto the market only concerned about putting out a product not a good one. They have had lots of opportunities to improve but they just haven't moved forward. So for the time being I will not buy anything from this company until they start believing in their own brand again. Thanks for the great vid Jerad and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable
I remember the late 80s into the 90s when Gerber were pretty good production knives. I'm far more concerned with how they open than how they close. I've always used my index finger to start then finish with my thumb to close them, it's just a habit that I've always done regardless of the knife.
Oh man... I saw the thumbnail, and was hoping Gerber had pulled their head out of their ass, and made a new sumo. A sumo with a decent blade steel. I was honestly excited about the sumo when they first came out, but Gerber had to go & pull a Gerber on us. Again. 🤦♂️
It's a shame gerber got me into knives but after realizing all the options out there I had to step away. I have never bought or handle and american made gerber which may make a difference bit how over price and low quality the budget gerbers have been I'm not willing to spend my money... lol ganzo knives really are kicking their butt
I had a gerber quickdraw when they first came out around 2009. It was a great knife, used it for years. well I lost it about 4 months ago, so I ordered the same knife again. The new ones are garbage. The handle feels super cheap plastic, the blade broke the second time I used. (yes I abused it but my one before I abused for years and never had a problem). I wont be buying another gerber personally.
That's good, this one imo is not even sharp, but my opinion of sharp is much different than most, I also noticed after the video that the edge is very burnt.
They are both from Chinese but completely different companies, the quality in every way is better. And I showed a knife that was less expensive and still better quality in every way. I can recommend you a 🇺🇸 knife of the same quality but it's going to be far more expensive
The Amazon listing on this has in the description, Special feature: rust free. I found that right after watching Neeves say there's a little spot of rust right outta the package. SMH Gerber is junk. They have been for a long time.
I have the strongarm I bought when it was getting praise on TH-cam. Knowing what I know now, it's just okay. The sumo being 7cr and coming in a blister pack is a no from me. I don't own one gerber folder.
7cr is practically useless. Try cutting through a poly blend rope and it rolls like a wheel. I have a Gerber Gator in 154 CM that I love, and I'm looking at the new Gerber Assert in S30v. Both are made in the USA.
Gerber is trashola. Thought about getting this knife at one point but made the right choice and didn’t. They had every opportunity to make a great folding kitchen knife but they choked.
Yes Gerber is making more knives in the U.S. however its at inflated prices. 200 for a 20cv fastball? Really? Didn't Kershaw ruin for these companies that supplement their income with Chinese made knives? They're offering a 20cv knife for less than $100 Why can't Gerber and now Buck do that?
You always pick the worst examples from Gerber. They have so many good knives in their USA made line. If you want an overbuilt fixed blade survival knife try the LMF, or their new S30V line to compete with the Bugout. Gerber makes some great stuff at their USA shop you just keep getting the junk. Check out their breaching tomahawk too, I want one of those and the Ding-Dong breaching sledgehammer too. I'm just saying, there are tons of cool things from Gerber but you keep checking out the trash they put in clam shell packaging to sell in grocery stores and Walmart stores.
No cap the first time I saw it on a different channel I was going to grab one but then I saw the price and the steel and had to pass.
