Before the reveal: The first one is the Sire The second one is the Fodera Simply because there's no way the Sire can get such a zingy tone out of singlecoils, while these humbuckers are known for having such tone After the reveal: Why did Scott say they sounded similar? There is a night and day difference between these two. If he compared the Fodera to something like a Schecter Stiletto or just anything with humbuckers, it would have been closer.
@@Rustinho while he did say that, he also said something along the lines of the basses sounding very similar. Even if he did not, these two basses were not a good choice for a comparison.
hutchmusician - Totally. The fret buzz was annoying. Might get rid of most of that with a decent set up as Scott says he doesn't set these up before he plays them. Plus, i just liked the Jazz Bass punch of the first one.
@@Ben-ic1ve - Yes, you could tell it was an active bass as it was super bright, but the fret rattle was coming from action too low, or truss rod out of adjustment, or bridge out of wack, or something else than the circuit.
I think the thing beyond the blurs actually making the basses visible that winched it for me was that you played the fodera with more enthusiasm. I saw you shredding on the fodera video and it's no secret you love the way they play.
I think the shapes are very different, so I could see the sire was first. Also, it kinda sounded like there was some camera audio or something more ambient happening during the 2nd bass section… did anyone else hear that??
It sounded like a lot of fret buzz like the strings were way too low. Other than that it sounded like it had a wider frequency response. I was never really impressed with Foderas sound but I actually liked this one, fret noise aside of course. There’s the issue of playability too and from what I’ve heard they excel in that area. I really liked the upper mid growl of the Sire though. I always liked a good jazz bass sound.
For all you guys out there, it's very funny because I own both of the those two brands. So I did find this video very interesting. I have a Sire v7 (first generation 60's pickups position, with Maple fretboard and Ash body) signed by Marcus himself and modified by me to get the exact Marcus sound (XTCT preamp and custom Hepcats pickups, Badass bridge... 2000 euros total). And I have a Fodera Custom Emperor 4 (made by own choices with same body, neck and fretboard / maple but with Seymour Duncan splittable pickups Hum/Single 60's position ... 11000 euros total). Both sounds great and plays great. Sire is the best when it comes to price. the V10 is no exception here as well. It's an awesome bass for the price. However Fodera is still the winner here. It's an absolute versatile bass that can beat any other kind of basses I've played. You want the Marcus sound ? It has it ! Want the Wooten sound ? Guess what it has it ! Want the Jaco ? Jamerson ? Bernard Edward ? Louis Johnson sound ? IT HAS IT ! And I would add way more, cause you can find your own sound. Really, I used to buy a lot of different basses for different style and genera of music, but since I own the Fodera, I only have those and sold all the others. I kept the Sire as a souvenir when I met Marcus and of course, he signed the bass (v7). But still keep in mind that it's the bass player who has to be versatile, no the contrary. In the world of studio recording, the Fodera has it all. Never played anything else since I have it. It's joy to play, the easiest bass I've played, sounds the best, Fodera is a killer brand. Of course you guys might say it's about the player and not the bass which I'll agree on, but please, just know that some basses are able to give the cream of the top. Cheers SBL followers !
Did you leave your mic on when playing the second bass? I heard a lot of rattles and stuff that sounded like stuff in the room rattling. Also, a lot of extra string rattling noise; as others have said, it sounds like that Fodera needs some setup attention! Honestly the second clip would not be usable in a performance or recording because of all that rattle. I really did dig the sound of the Sire, though, and I've been looking for my next 4-string bass (in love with my Yamaha BB735a). That Sire just shot to the top of my list!
Thanks for the Contest first was the V 10 Marcus M. And the Second was the Fordera. That’s what I think, hope I’m right the 4 String is my choice even though there both Beautiful Instruments.
The first one was the SIre because Scott's thumb popped up above the blurred instrument. Fedora being five-stringed, wrapping around the neck with your thumb will be much more difficult.

Very easy to tell because of the single coil tone is a give away. Totally different tone with a humbucker on the fodera as well Bass 1: sire Bass 2: fodera
The first bass was the Sire: The Sire has the grit as well and tone Sire is a single-coil pick-up 2nd Bass: The Fodera has fret buzz & Grit I like the double coil sound
I signed up for lessons, and there is a TON of great stuff so far! With regards to the bass comparison, I think the first one is the Sire, because it sounds like it has passive pickups, and I think the Fodera has active pickups. I don't know if that makes sense. 😂
I still love my sire m7, probably the best tone in my opinion out of all my basses, I only have 3 and the sire is the cheapest and tbh the most high quality
@@latenight5865 ya they are, Marcus Miller really hooks it up. I have the 5 string ash m7 and it’s build quality is so good I could sleep with it and my toxic night sweats wouldn’t warp it haha
#1 Sire, #2 Fodera, mainly because the first one has the classic jazz bass tone. I preferred the sound of the Sire too with these settings that were used but the Fodera would have much more tonal variety to choose from. I also agree with many of the other posters that the Fodera had a strange almost buzzy tone?? Maybe setup or other issues? 12K for any bass is not going to happen for me. I'm more of a quantity over quality guy when it comes to basses. There are many great "budget" basses being made now that sound awesome. Buy several to get some different options. I would cherish and play either one though if I would be so fortunate to actually win one.
I guessed them right! I had a feeling the thousand dollar bass was the first one because you played it so smoothly, the second bass(more expensive one) I could hear more strings being hit in the background(kinda clangy sound) I'm definitely entering the draw! I would love to have the first bass 👌😊🌞
Well I guessed that right without watching the video at all..After 40 years I have a Sire and love it..It sounded great, but #2 was substantially zingier as DGTommy mentioned.
ever heard the poem, “touch of the master’s hand”? i think that’s the biggest factor. i liked the Sire sound better but they both sound great because Scott’s playing them!
I think the first one is the Sire and the second one the Fodera, there is not so much color from a preamp in it, thats because i think its the Fodera, for its cleaner sound.
The two basses sounded very different to me. The first one was 100% jazz bass vibes and the second one had that signature boutique bass vibe. Personally I thought the second bass has the vibe that these days, I usually associate with bassists who bring the wrong bass to the gig. Certainly amazing for what it is, but not my cup of tea.
Listening through my dinky onboard computer speakers, didn't think I could tell the difference but chose correctly. The Sire has a chunkier tone in contrast to the Fodera which sounded smoother and more refined. Just wondering if the tone controls on both guitars were evenly matched.
I'm gonna say first bass is Sire. It's got a real kinda beefed up jazz bass tone. I'm assuming the Fodera's humbuckers have some high tonal range thing that allows for that buzzy treble. Which ever is which, bass one has my ears!
Okay I don't know if I just played bass for long enough, but this was incredibly easy for me. I could immediately tell the difference because of the pickups. Single coils just sound a certain way. Without saying which one I actually liked more, there was a huge difference between the two tones and the first just sounded like singelcoils...
I listened to the video with earbuds without watching. I loved the clean articulation of the first, and truly disliked the rattle on the second -like it wasn’t set up properly and the strings were too low to the fingerboard. Worse then most Richenbackers. When I replayed the video and watched, my preference for the Sire was confirmed in both visual appeal and sound quality.
Sorry it was obvious to me even with a cellphone that bass # 1 was the 4 string, lesser expensive 'pro' model. Good event though. Makes you really listen.
