I consider myself a winner thanks to the streaming wars. I found that since I can't watch many of the big hits when they are newly released, I lose interest in watching them at all. Since I can't watch everything I want to watch, I have come to realize that it is not that important to watch the shows that I can. As a result of the streaming wars, I now watch far less TV, I read more and I do other activities more. So I'm really the winner.

It's not cable. People never changed from a broadcast/cable mentality. No one is obligated to pay month over month to wait for a new series, episode, or movie. They choose to do this. Simply cancel a subscription for a few months then subscribe again when it benefits you to watch the new content.

    • @TheDawnofVanlife

Cable was WAY worse. It takes like 5 seconds to cancel or re-sign up for a streaming service and I can have that streaming service on any device I want. Even when I am out of town. I don’t have to call the cable company to install anything and if I cancel, I don’t have to haul installed equipment back in order to not be charged for it. Even if you got cable, each additional TV in your home usually came at a cost. Because you had to run a signal box to each separate TV (maybe it changed since the years since I abandoned cable, but proably not). Adding or subtracting channels were all controlled by your cable provider and it was an annoying process to adjust your package. Also, it wasn’t on demand. You watched what the channel aired in the timeslot it airred it for the most part. There probably will be a flux in streaming services over the coming years. Some will stick and others will fade away or combine. But streaming is still better then cable by miles. Even with ads.

@@TheDawnofVanlife Adding to cable being worse. You don't have a choice of your cable TV provider. They have been omniopolies for decades where there is only 1 provider for your area so they don't compete. You take what they offer or you do without. And naturally all of their package tiers come with 50 sport channels which most of us don't care about but have to pay for because those who want the pickle ball world championship won't pay what it would cost to license it.
@Delta-Tech yes the cable companies are also most of our ISPs which are able to screw us over because once again most of us have no choice in provider.

Up until 2001, when they switched from analog to digital in the NYC tri-state area, I rarely watched network or cable/satelite tv. PBS (public broadcasting) channels like 13, 21, 25, and 31 had loads of programs and documentaries (many from the BBC) that my family had watched since I was a kid. Silent films, '30s Film Noir, Foreign films, European New Wave, 70s New Hollywood, experimental and cultural documentaries, BBC comedies and drama, live performances- as an adult I literally had no reason or interest to watch mainstream television and I still remember that bitter day I had to buy a digital flatscreen and throw out my tube tv set (if you still owned one). Well, ironically, I use the internet to watch the same (public domain) content I used to watch on PBS.

The fact that all those streaming platform hit a wall of loses is part of capitalism. Because profits and losses are both incentives that make a business profitable or not.
People invested in steaming because it was really profitable. They invested too much and have to cut back. They took a risk and will be punished for making a wrong decision with their investment. No one that actually understand economies believe there is such a thing as infinite growth.
Its called economy and diseconomies of scales. There is a limit to growth which is why in a free market, monopolies cannot exist.
It was so profitable because people bought the services which brought investments and now every company is struggling to see what is the best way to offer this service.

Most if not all streaming services do their customers an enormous disfavor. They fail to provide a COMPLETE, UP TO DATE list off all content available. How am I supposed to make an informed decision of what to watch when I don't know what is available? Sure, I can search for content, but that assumes I know what I want and I'm looking to see if they have it. They also need to learn about and use this thing called the alphabet. I'm tired of streaming services displaying content lists in random order. It should ALWAYS be sorted alphabetically or have an option of how I want the content list to be sorted.

    • @rodryguezzz
      @rodryguezzz ปีที่แล้ว +31

The "informed decision" they want you to do is to watch what they present you, and if you watch it long enough, they'll present similar things. They don't expect the mainstream audience to do a deep research before watching something. It's all about promoting what it's already successful.

Viewers may have lost the streaming wars but the cable companies brought this on themselves. Realistically the end result described in the video is what we had been waiting for, an ala carte plan.
In the early 90s our cable company stated they were working towards an ala carte plan where we could package groups of channels or select specific channels. This was the plan as customers were complaining about having so many channels they never watched. The only channels that ever agreed to this were WGN and WTBS. As years passed and this never happened (and these two were quietly added back into the standard package) it came out the channels refused to go along. Some channels viewership was so low that it came out if they were available only by customer choice subscriptions would be so low they would have to close.
It's unlikely the end result will come to much of a savings but it is a little closer to what we wanted.

Foxtel was a huge thing here in Australia, but they still refuse to change. Started out good, little to no ads and great content cycled through. Now it's full of as many ads as normal tv, costs a fortune, and is only available on one tv. How it's still going is beyond me, i'm guessing mine sites and hotels that still use it for their rooms. As a avid anime fan in the 2010s, anime certainly went through this problem way before the streaming wars. Piracy was honestly the only option to go to, to watch your favorite anime. Crunchyroll only had a limited catalog, most likely trying to keep the "free" model. Due to the multiple streaming services having limited catalogs, piracy grew and the anime industry was struggling. I was scared about Sony absorbing all legal streaming services for anime couple years ago, but it might save the industry having all the anime in one place. Though, Sony threw away the "free" model that CR had so the service can now pick up more anime. Great detail video. Thanks. As a screenwriter, I am aware of nother issue that is about to cause an industry shut down in the US with the TV and film writers strike. Writing for cable and network there was a chance of making a living because they made so many episodes writers could count on having year-round employment on shows that lasted over 20 episodes. Now, very few streaming shows last more than 10 episodes at the most. Because they cost so much, they disappear for a year to 18 months before another batch shows up. Ironically, there are more shows but far fewer episodes of them. This adds up too much less work for writers despite the fact there seems to be more television with over 500 scripted shows last year.
The other thing that streaming has done is wipe out the syndication market. Screenwriters get royalties on international sales and re-broadcasting of their work. Not unlike, a musician getting royalties based on the plays of their songs on various platforms. When streamers make a series they own world rights. there is no secondary market for TV produced for streamers. Therefore, far fewer royalties for writers and everyone else. Yes, we get a very small percentage for digital royalties, but it does not compensate for the rollback of income in every other area.

I subscribe to Hulu Live during college football season and then cancel it. Since I already have an Amazon Prime account, I make do with the shows I can find there and TH-cam fills in all the gaps. I'm subscribed to over 200 channels because they've produced content I've liked in the past. And if they change, if they don't produce content I like anymore, I can simply unsubscribe and move on with my day. I don't have to pout about losing money when I have my AdBlocker on and never directly give them money regardless. TH-cam provides endless amounts of content for me to watch. Releasing movies into a cinema and then farming it out to streamers in a manner which maximised profits, before moving onto physical media, was still a viable strategy for movies. The issue was the studios were obsessed with streaming subs. The studio's destroyed their standard movie model in order to use those movies to boost subs. That strategy was a disaster and is currently being reversed by many studios. But for streaming, I agree the main focus is tv-shows, but apart from Netflix this is not giving anyone any profits.

The issue with streaming is, in 2 or 3 months, you can binge your favorite shows and start diving into the more crappy shows to where you just simply get bored or burnt out of content. Its an issue with too much content, to little relation to at least my pallete for shows and movies. I haven't had a streaming service for a good year and a half or more and honestly I don't even really need the background noise for it anymore. I haven't had regular tv in over 5 years, so its just one of those things to where television at least for me is loosing its appeal. Id rather pay for an interactive environment or game more so than a television situation. Also, as stated in the video, with all these services going native to there own platform, I've lost alot of content if I stick to just one situation.
