I’m getting one soon. Most likely will name him chip. Are they able to live with different species of bantams(booted)? Can they stay outdoors in rain? How can I train mine?
They can live with different breeds of bantams. Th he can be out in the rain but their feathers don’t repel water very well so they will be a soaked mop. Best to have a roof over their heads and an enclosed run or somewhere where they can go to get out of the elements. You can train them just like any other chicken. They are very sweet and as long as you handle them from hatch they will be friendly and amenable to handling!
This is a good video on Silkies. When I got mine there was not many “informational” videos on them. They do require different care and consideration then the standard chickens. Especially regarding ineffective cold tolerance. I am sure many of these poor little feather babies freeze to death because of owners ignorance and lack of research on the breed. Great job! Melanie & Melvin (my lil sweeties). thank you. I have noticed mine are more sing-song in their sounds. Especially my rooster, I swear sometimes he is singing lol. Have you noticed that?
I have been raising chickens for 4 years now. Finally this fall, I got 17 silkie chicks. Lost 3 chicks in a week, sad I know, but we have 14 healthy silkie chicks. They just turned 2 months old today and I just love them! They are so sweet. I have 1 buff, 7 black, 3 white, and 3 speckled. Thanks for your video! Also, I heard silkies don’t roost at night. That’s awesome Michelle! I learned the hard way that Silkies need more protein than the 16 percent layer feed when they start laying. Mine got really thin. I now have them on meatbird which is working out really nicely!
hello, i purchased 2 silkie chicks at about 2 days old and they unfortunately passed away. i know it’s super sad i was crying for ever, i did even up finding a local farmer to purchase them from instead of a store, but i specifically asked for the chicks to be a week old. is that a good age frame for me to buy them? or do you recommend them being older?? i do have all the supplies i need such as a heat lamp and everything else.
Silkies are very fragile. The good thing about getting them young is that they imprint on you. However, they are more susceptible to certain changes in temps because they are bantams. Just make sure the temperature is at 95 degrees and put electrolytes in their water. You are a little late in getting them this time of year unless you live in a hot climate so I would wait till spring so you can put them out once their feathers come in and it will be nicer weather.
My boy has TBI. BUT, after weeks of vitamins and pampering, he was able to rejoin his ladies. He stumbles a little sometimes, but mostly does great. He hit his head & that's all it took. Vaulted skulls are susceptible. Silkies & Polish...I'm sure there are others. Anyway, Silkies are great. I adore mine. Thanks for sharing! ❤

I have 4 white silkie chicks that are about 2 1/2 - 3 months old. 1 of them is bigger then the other 3. Has thicker legs and bigger feet. But no longer has the fluff on top of the head. Do you think that 1 could be a roster?
Loved this video! A few questions: 1.) I have a silkie (she’s black and super fluffy, her name is Florence and she’s my lil baby) that is about 5-6 months old. We have another hen of a different breed (she’s a silver duck wing, and there’s also a rooster with her) that’s about the same age. I found the first egg a couple days ago and I found another one today. How do I tell which one is laying if I didn’t see it happen? (They live in the same coop) 2.) What temperature is too low for silkies and what heat source should I use?
It’s really hard to tell, which one is laying if you don’t catch them in the act. Usually the one laying is going to be more vocal, perhaps you caught one doing the egg song or pacing more than usual? So anything below zero you might want to keep checking on them.
People do it but you are putting the Silkies at a physical risk due to their bantam size and the thin skulls they have when a hen pecks them on the head. It could cause brain damage or death. As far as the roosters, usually two grown roosters will not get a long unless brought up together.

Silkies don’t really perch. If you have them you need a really low roost. They can’t fly so trying to fly up to a roost is impossible for them. They prefer to sleep in the floor. The coop I have is great for them . : www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/petmate-superior-construction-chicken-coop-70401d
Hello! I got gift fir New Year 3 rooster, can you tell me how you about winter ( what should I buy ?) I live in Arizona and for night time I take they home , protect from cold , night time 40 F
They would be fine I’m their chicken coop at night. Right now in Illinois it is 9 degrees and I have a little water heater in the coop and they are fine.
Yes. You have to be careful introducing them to standard size chickens. They can kill them with a peck to the head. I have my Silkies in a separate coop from my Leghorns and Sex links. You should do it slowly, putting the new Silkies in a dog cage or separated so they can see each other for a couple weeks.
It’s not about age it’s about size equivalent so I would wait till they are at least 4 months before integrating them. But you have to observe closely.
Word of caution to silkie owners! Look for leg mites as the features on their feet makes it hard to spot the nasty things they can your silkies to become lame. Also if not treated the chicken will lose toes. I know from experience the mites are hard to get rid of and will cause a tremendous amount of work to get rid of. You can’t see the mites with the naked eye you only see the scale’s the mites cause.
Thanks for your video going to move out to the country and want to have 1 rooster and 4 chickens to lay eggs, wanted to know if regular chicken could be around silkies in the same pen or open range area or will they not get along. I’m new to this. Thank you.
As long as they are raised together, it should be okay. You might want to have a Silkie rooster and the other breeds standard size because a standard size rooster will try and mount the Silkie too and it might be too big and hurt the little Silkie hen, especially because you are only having 5 chickens since the ideal combo is 1 rooster to 10 hens.
Someone gave me an all black silkie rooster and he is absolutely great with the hens once he adjusted. He wants to fight everyone no matter how small he is though. He doesn't follow me around like he used to now that I got him to stop pecking me. He likes sleeping on the porch if I don't let him in the coop.
Truth be told, my two buff roosters are kind of jerks. The one in the video is especially mean to my husband. It’s spring so they will get a little more aggressive than usual.
Wonderful, informative video! Thank you! I have some Silkie/Partridge Chantecler cross chicks, seven weeks old. I am trying to sex them. Any pointers, besides waiting for the roosters to crow?

My silkie is just recently started sitting in her box but she has no eggs & hasn’t layed one for weeks.. I’m not sure if she’s sick & I don’t know what to do.. Do you recommend anything specific for her to eat? She is making soft sounds, and isn’t acting her normal energetic self.
When you put your hand in to love her does she act broody or annoyed ? Usually she she wanting to be a mom and hatch eggs. If she isn’t she may be sick. Trying making her a scrambled egg and see if she is interested. When in doubt, you can ask a veterinarian.
i want to get a silkie as a pet but i often go to my partner's house who has a very timid but mostly well behaved cat do they tend to get on well? i dont want to wake up one morning and find either one dead
Cats are predators and chickens are prey. Might not be a good combination if they weren’t raised together. Usually cats don’t go after full size chickens but because they are bantams, you might have a problem.
My silkie roaster make noise in the morning so I m confused if it’s real silkie breed or not can u please tell me does silkie roaster make noise in the morning like other roaster do?
Yes all roosters regardless of breed crow unless you have multiple roosters together then sometimes the rooster that is very low on the pecking order does not crow.
If you want a cuddly chicken then they are great but they don’t lay a lot of eggs and they do go broody a lot which means they want to sit on eggs and hatch them therefore not laying.
my silkie chicken is smart but she does not take no for a answer though . If I don't see her for 2 weeks , she gives me a 5-6 minute silent treatment it's her way to show me how mad she is . She loves people , walks , baths and car rides .
Earlobe color doesn't 100% correspond to egg color. I have EEs with white Earlobes, & lay brown. I have an Orpington with red earlobes, & she lays off white. My silkies have blue, & lay tinted, white, & cream.
I hate chickens. I work at a Tractor Supply but I enjoyed this video. I like to give interesting facts to customers about the chickens we have. It’s pretty cool. But I still hate chickens.
I always hated chickens too… until we got some! Now I want some in every size and color! Lol.
Great information. Thanks
What if someone who is new to chickens but wants the cuddles of a chicken? Good beginner then?
If you want a cuddly chicken then they are great but they don’t lay a lot of eggs and they do go broody a lot which means they want to sit on eggs and hatch them therefore not laying.
My sister's silkie started laying at 5 months of age.
Hi I have a two silkies and one is name buttercup and my chicken witch is cotton candy
Love it
Great video. I’m looking for a chicken breed that great for kids and dual purpose. Thank you.
Thank you!!♥️🐓
my silkie chicken is smart but she does not take no for a answer though . If I don't see her for 2 weeks , she gives me a 5-6 minute silent treatment it's her way to show me how mad she is . She loves people , walks , baths and car rides .
I didn't know they were in the bantam family, I made a bad choice putting my silkie with a Welsummer
Fun video :)
Thank you!!
Lol! That’s funny! Thank you! 😄
I always hated chickens too… until we got some! Now I want some in every size and color! Lol. I’ve officially become a crazy chicken lady, at 35. 😂
They (and ducklings) are really fun to watch grow and develop their own little personalities. Some of ours even come when you call them (to give them food).
From China....
My silkie chicken is female and we named her talia because my family is mexican we gave her a name in a mexican accent
Chickens!
