Taken from MiniDiscs (Hacked) DISC15 in 9:46 This is the best version of Lift imo. I do not own the rights to this music/song. All rights belong to the owner. No Copyright Infringement Intended
Lmao I heard this version two years ago before I moved to Japan, went to FamilyMart for the first time, walked through the door "OH MY GOD IT'S LIFT" 🤣
If there ever was a song that could be Radiohead's "last" song, it is this. Even though it was written ages ago, the lyrics, strings and guitar all make it feel like a culmination of all the bands work into one song.
@@justthememelordsnextdoor9120 imo that wouldn't matter, I think this song has easily one of the most inspirational messages Radiohead has put out there, at least joyous ones. It's like saying on an elevator you see many destinations and meet many people along the way of life, but even when your elevator ride is at an end, someone elses is just beginning, a beautiful ending.
They said they didn't release it as a single because it would have been a smash , and they didn't want that... They were right because this is a fantastic piece of music. Badass.
They also said it didn't fit the album, something i disagree with. It might not fit from a production view, it's way more pop and anthemic than the rest of tracks, but thematically it does. Lift: the fear of being stuck in an elevator. The tourist: the fear of being involved in a car accident. Lucky: the fear of being involved in a plane crash. Basically the fear of industrialization, something that's present through the whole album.
I heard Thom wrote these lyrics based on letters between him and a japanese fan at the time. So, if the jingle was a Family Mart one, there’d be no wonder.

Radiohead are true geniuses for being able to make a song like this but also recognize how huge it could've been (would've rivaled Creep as their "signature" song). Judging by how well their career has gone, maybe they made the right choice in withholding this to keep their sanity. If I had to put it on OK Computer, I'd put it inbetween Airbag and Paranoid Android.
Nice man! I wish i still had my minidisc collection. This was definitely on my Radiohead mix. I completely forgot about all of their bsides. I learned so much from them, like what a maquiladora is.
Considering how big it is, as of now I'm not very familiar with most of Radiohead's discography. It's crazy to me how they have so many amazing songs that they can record a song like this and go "yeah, let's not release it"

@@tristanraine I think that would've added to it, personally - it'd be like a nice, warm hug after all the darkness. A glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel.

I think they should have released it as a single after OK Computer, like late '98 or early '99, to tide people over till the next album. KID A would have been an even bigger mind-blowing album if it followed the Lift single lol. But they had moved on from the sound of grungy guitars and big choruses by then.
@@PlanetXerox dude, it's not a radiohead thing lol more like a music industry thing. They officially released this on bandcamp years ago, that's why it keeps getting taken down, it's protected by copyright. See the video's description, it was already claimed by xl recordings (their label).
@@wilberts.cubero3629 it was released on Bandcamp due to their asses getting leaked and is simply just a contingency plan. this version of Lift was never meant to be released to the public, but because some hacker decided to put some of the leaked content for ransom, RH beat him on his own game and made it available for a limited time. soon enough, RH wanted these tapes removed again onto the public, that's mostly why you don't see anything from MiniDisc content anywhere on TH-cam; RH doesn't want people to come and listen to alternate versions of the material they feel already happy about with OKC.
Radiohead were definitely right in their fears of this becoming a massive hit - Coldplay's "Yellow", one of the biggest songs of the 2000's, is a damn-near carbon copy of this song.
Lift is a fantastic pop song. I think there could have been another OKC-era EP with all of the songs that aren’t on Meeting People Is Easy… maybe even call it the Lift EP… but I don’t think it fits in the proper OKC tracklisting.
