  • In this video, Dr. Pitre gives insight into the Biblical foundation for Ash Wednesday, as well as the rationale and purpose of the season of Lent. He addresses questions such as:
    • Why do you we use ashes?
    • Why are we asked of the Church to increase our fasting, prayer, and almsgiving during Lent?
    • Is Lent just about abstaining from a favorite food, or is there something more to it?

So was that the way they repented with the ashes? Why not wear your sackcloth also.....the blind leading the blind will both fall into the ditch. Jesus was weary of the pharisees because of this vain And HIDEOUS TRADITIONS OF MEN....
🤔waaaaait!....where did jesus direct his disciple to that if it was a requirement? Just one place show us....and if Jesus did not direct in the scripture you are doing a man made religion doctrines of demons. I was a catholic....i stoped going ON MY OWN WHEN I STARTED READING THE BIBLE. Beware not obey Jesus but vain traditions which infact is twisted......

      @@irishman5562,
When catholics say, “come over to my house of worship.” What we’re supposed reading into that is, “WRONG HOUSE.”
You’re in the wrong house, your preacher is waring the wrong robe, and essentially, you have the wrong father.
I want you to understand my friend, understand me well:
The church of the Lord Jesus Christ is not one of many churches.
      “IT IS THEE CHURCH.”
      There is no other church!
      They sing A Cappella Hymns!
That is the only church that Jesus shed His Blood for.
And if you’re not in it, you’ll be lost when He comes back.
And any church that claims to be married to Christ, “must ware His Name.”
      AND ONLY HIS NAME!
Now, why do catholic churches refuse to be called churches of Christ?
It’s because the Catholic church does not line up with the Written Word of God.
      Thus, catholic is “de-nominated.”

      @rlrett1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@Vaya Condios, Thank you for your explanation! Straightforward, I was asking You this question, because from your post I could see that You are steeped in Catholicism and as You mentioned a defender of the faith! Noble causes are they? I keep it short about myself , former Catholic of 55 years, devout the last 25, daily mass, rosary, chaplet of mercy, A defender of the faith in your words! Then came the day, by the grace of God, when I started to open God's word and ask God that I wanted to know the truth, and only the truth and I haven;t looked back! That was 8 years ago, no more rosary, no more chaplet, more individual prayer, greater understanding of His Word, seeing the errors of the RCC, leaving the RCC! Not an easy thing, but the RCC became a stumbling block in my Christian walk and growth ! Studying Catholic saints and books gives You always a bias response! When You stand before Christ and say the Pope said, Jesus will answer, What did my Word say! When You tell him I put my trust in the revelation of the apparitions of "Mary", He will call Mary over as a witness and the real Mary will point to the Word, probably with tears in her eyes, because of the terrible abomination done in her name, God's humble servant. She will open the Word and point to a specific verse
2 Corinthians 11:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
2 Corinthians 11:15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.
Don't believe me, study Paul's epistles without BIAS (Romans-Philemon), and with prayer, you will find the Gospel of grace according to the Mystery! No priesthood, no priests, no covenant in the body of Christ, salvation solely by grace through faith, not of works or it would't be grace! When You realize the gift You received by believing the Gospel (1 Corinthians 15), You starting to serve God from your heart! No sacraments, no confirmation, (funny how our young people stop going to church after confirmation, they supposedly just received the HOLY SPIRIT). I show You were You receive the Holy Spirit and it isn't Confirmation or Pentecost
Ephesians 1:13 in whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
Ephesians 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
      1 Corinthians 6:19-20
What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.
      1) You believe 1 Corinthians 15
      2) Holy Spirit seals you into the Body of Christ, the moment You believe>>>>>until the Day of redemption! This day is the Day You receive your resurrected body and go to heaven! No purgatory, straight to heaven, remember you are sealed into his body, that means if You go to purgatory, He has to go too! So the Holy Spirit takes residence in us the moment we believe until the day of redemption! He also puts up the Down-payment!
      2 Corinthians 1:21-23
21 Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God; 22 who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.
      Ephesians 1:13-15
13 in whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 14 which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
From a member of the Body of Christ, finally unshackled from the Nicolatian bondage practiced within the RCC, with freedom in Christ, I wish You God's blessing and wisdom upon You!

Depending on whose Christian scholars u are talking about because all Catholic Christian Scholars do not disagree with one another. But if u are talking about other sects, therefore they will have their own interpretations.
"non-canonical jewish texts from antiquity" what do u mean by that? 1st century bible did not exist at the time of Jesus and there were no close selection nor definitive Jewish bible but there were collections of Writings (still being debated). At the time of Jesus it consisted of 2 partition.
Mt. 5:17 Jesus said, 17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law (Torah) or the Prophets (Nevi'im).
The Writings (Ketuvim) such as Psalms, Daniel, Job, Chronicles 1 & 2, and so forth are not fully developed in 1st century AD.
Some of the Dead Sea Scrolls attest to Hebrew texts other than
those on which the MasoreticText (TanakH) was based; in some cases, these newly found texts accord with the Septuagint version. Strong evidence exists that the Septuagint was the canon in place in first century Palestine.
The Catholic including the Orthodox Church have been using the Septuagint Version of the Bible.

Wrong again the Bible says god knew us before
      we were born
He knows how many hairs are on our head
He loved us so much he died for our sins
He made it so easy to know him to be born again a spiritual transformation
All we have to do is accept him as our savior
Thank him for dying for our sins
      Praise and worship him
Learn his ways from the word of god in the Bible
Then we will slowly change and be more like him and less like ourselves
He new we were sinners he sent his son as
      our savior
So you and I are in the Bible
      We are children of god
We are in the Bible a lot
The pope and Catholics church are not in the Bible
      Jesus died a Jew
      He was not a Catholic
Jesus followers and his church are Christians
      Followers of Christ are Christians
Followers of the pope and the Vatican are Catholics a pagan cult that is actually Antichrist
Jesus said search for the truth you will find it
      Pray for understanding
      Learn from Billy Gram
or Charles Stanley or Joseph Prince
      Even Joel Osteen
Then watch the pope see who you want to follow
Hope this helped you open your mind
I don’t think you are really a Catholic
      Do you do the rosary
      Do you go to confession
      Do you pray to saints
Do you believe the pope is your holy father?
No premarital sex or birth control
Look you don’t follow your religion
Your only Catholic because your grandma came from a Catholic country
You don’t know anything about Jews Moslems
Protestants or the Roman Catholic Church in the Vatican
I was Catholic like so many others
I kept searching and found the truth
Bible says gates to heaven are narrow
Gates to hell are wide open
You really think a billion Catholics following pagan teachings are going to heaven
Do you think your going to heaven
Do you have a relationship with Christ or a relationship with a religion

I've putted those studies and sources in a 3 mn video in my channel ("Faith as sustening meaning"). I understand and was wondering about this. We were taught in Catholic school that fasting isn’t necessary, but instead of doing something “negative” to do something “positive”. I was at a Catholic function other day and was talking about fasting, as I recently learned about tradition of fasting in the Church. I was truly inspired by this and started talking about it to share, to light the lamp, so to speak. It occurred to me later that maybe this was pride, but I suppose Jesus knows what was in my heart more than I would even know. .. when ppl give on social media and add their name, it actually is very positive and triggers me to do same out of them role modeling for me, and not out of keeping up. We need to be able to discuss fasting, alms giving and all of it bc most of us have not actually been taught. I’m excited for this new knowledge. I think we DO need to light the lamp but to be wary of pride.I know I learn so much from others who role model and teach me. So idk if it’s OK ever to talk about it…. I mean out of obedience to Scripture teaching.

@@70AD-user45 You appear to be wrapped up in an ultra clean division btwn old covenant and new, even to the extent of eliminating very human customs and symbols (employed personally, or in liturgy). But it is Christ, who, on the very crest of inaugurating the new covenant, rebuked cities of his day for not repenting, and refers to it in terms of repenting "in sackcloth and ashes." Further, Rom 12 tells is to weep with those who weep (which for Jews, would have engaged Jewish customs). Jms 4:1-10 mentions lamenting, mourning, and weeping. Rev 11:3 God's two witnesses are dressed in sackcloth. ...Having a custom or practice does not inherently make something "old covenant." The Lord's Supper is inherintly founded on old covenant praxis, but is reshaped into a new covenant.
By contrast, Protestantism is full of traditions without any biblical basis whatsoever, and in some cases actually antibiblical. Got a beef with Protestant traditions?

I could not have put it better myself. The way I see it, that very day the Old Covenant temple was destroyed in 70 AD, that was the day the New Covenant age of the church was born. By the way I'm Eastern (Greek) Orthodox. I could never be Protestant. The Eastern Orthodox also have many traditions dating back to the Old Covenant age: the vestments, the altar (most holy place), the censer and insence, etc. I'm not against traditions, just so long as we remember that the age the New Testament calls the age of "sin and death" is over and in Christ we have "grace and life" in the New Covenant age. Take care.

Proud to be Catholic! Thank you sharing reasons for this rich tradition of our Church. I feel more empowered. "I repent and turn my face to the Lord "

"I repent and turn my face to the Lord " i urge you to do so....its one thing to explain the tradition of "your" church and its another thing to explain God's church...
The Bereans "received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so" (Acts 17:10-11).
      Mark 7:8 ►

      New International Version
You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions."
      New Living Translation
For you ignore God's law and substitute your own tradition."
      English Standard Version
You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.”
      Berean Study Bible
You have disregarded the commandment of God to keep the tradition of men.”

Having neglected the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men."

I work with a girl who said she was proud to be Pentecostal. How can you be proud to be of a certain religion. Your religion be it catholic or pentecostal or whatever can't save you.

Right on point, when the Catholic church interprete the Scripture and not the Scripture interpreting church, hence the Catholic church has given the Lenten observance. Thanks Dr. Pitre for this clear explanation... Those who have ears let them hear.

Very insightful lecture, the New Testament is concealed in the Old, just as the Old Testament is revealed and fulfilled by the New" (St. Augustine).

I’m 75, a cradle Catholic, and am just coming to appreciate the depths of my Church’s teachings. There is a reason for everything, and priests should explain our beliefs and practices as you do, so we’re informed enough to answer the critical questions of Protestants and non-believers.

@Patrick Montgomery There is no need to shout But there is a need to get your sentence structure, built a lot better so you can convey your thoughts clearly . Whereas I disagree with Lent as being unscriptural and filled with RCC beliefs not found in scripture , I will try to comment to others is a calm manner.

@Patrick Montgomery Typing in capitals is considered shouting . Patrick, it is not a case of nitpicking it is more a case of trying to get you to convey your thoughts on a subject that allows others to see if you are correct or dismally a troll. Your continued use of capitals and small print is not conveying a decent reply to people , it is more a disconcerting response as it appears you are angry vs calm.
Coll 4:5 Act wisely toward outsiders, redeeming the time. 6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

    • @bobloblawb2593
      @bobloblawb2593 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@Patrick Montgomery And still shouting so you have not dealt with it , just ignored it !
Post something calmly and without shouting and people will either respect your opinion or at least see that you respect them and their differences.
Keep up with the shouting and you will be shown up as someone to ignore.
      The choice is yours.
