How to make an Autumn Tree Bark Cake | Chocolate Leaf Tutorial | Decorating Tutorial

  • In this cake decorating tutorial, I show you how I made this Autumn Tree Bark cake with Chocolate leaves made by using real leaves! This cake is frosted with buttercream and the bark is fondant. So not a totally fondant covered cake:) The leaves are pretty easy to make but do require some patience. I did use artificial floral for this cake to save time. But I think they look just as good as fresh or sugar! I hope this gets you in the Fall spirit and you give some of these techniques a try! Thank you so much for watching:)

      This was really pretty 🦋 I'm wanting to do something like a wrap, where you pull a panel around to the front but curve the left side down and the right side would cover just a little of the left side at the bottom only, leaving the center open. Then I wanted to ruffle the top edge ( would like it to be a double ruffle really) then paint the the top edges of the ruffle . Make sense?? Almost like wrapping a shawl around your shoulders but not fully covering your chest......weird I know, just trying to explain it. Hoping you can understand my crazy brain....lol. Thank you

      I am glad you found me too!! That is just water I spray on the buttercream to help smooth it;)

    Wow this cake came out perfect. I love the bark effect with those flowers and chocolate leaves. Do you find that using lemon extract does not dry? or is that just me. Even if I leave it overnight its usually still wet. I prefer to use vodka as that does dry quickly. Thank you for another masterpiece. You are amazing xxx

      Yes I find the same thing. I used to use vodka but Have found that you van get one coat coverage with the Everclear;)

    Hey Mary!! I promise, promise this will be the last time I bug you with questions! lol (I actually received the impression mat and did a practice run with it with some fondant, and it works really great and is really easy actually!) My 2 questions to you are... my friend, who I'm doing the cake for... she wants a semi-naked cake. Do you think the bark would apply if the cake is frosted semi-naked? (It will definitely be more semi naked than naked with a good amount of buttercream), but I just didn't want to run into any problems. (I guess I can always spray with water if needed.) And the other question is... since I'm new to fondant, I've read numerous things about how you should never store a cake with fondant in the fridge (if you don't have to.) However... as you also know, I feel more confident about transporting a 2-tier cake (which I'm going to have to do) chilled vs not, and so I would like to have the cake fully crafted the day before as opposed to trying to do it the day of delivery. So If I put the cake in a box... sealed with plastic in the fridge, should the fondant bark decorations be ok? Thanks, again for your time! - Matt

    Mary, I love this! I can't believe this is the cake you did today....I was just on Amazon, planning on buying a silicone bark mold, but wasn't sure which would be the best one. You mentioned there's a link for it in the description box, but I don't see an actual link Also wondering about a link for the boba straws you use??

      Well I tried to add the link:( did it not work? If you are looking on Amazon, it is the pink one. There are a few but I think they are the same. Any of the fat bobba straws in Amazon would work.

      That is a fabric ruler. You can find them in the fabric department at Hobby stores;)

    Thank you for this! Question for you; regarding placing the fondant bark on.. will it still apply if the cake has been chilled? Or does the buttercream need to be somewhat tacky? Also.. could you do the color definition / painting to the fondant beforehand. (Before applying it to the cake?) ohhh... and one more question ;) ... did you use a fondant that was already a chocolate fondant, or did you color it yourself? Thank you so much!!

      Yes yo everything;) you can apply it to the cake if it has a little condensation or brush on a little water or shortening.

(I'll be doing the exact same size two-tiered cake) as well as... I noticed that, in your technique with rolling out the fondant.. it looks like you you prick it every once in a while with a pin or something like that. what is that exactly? Thank you!

      @@badkat68 honestly I don't know how much I used;( I always have quite a bit in hand, so I don't measure it out. I would guess about 1 lb? I am popping air bubbles;)
