    what they hope you will do is do a return, and then enter your credit card to get you return started, and boom. The local sheriff had this on the news the other day some lady lost her entire bank account. So yes if you get something you did not order, toss it, but don't enter their web site. don't scan it.

      If I get an unexpected package from a seller I haven't bought anything from (or that has no return address of any kind), I just write "Return to sender, delivery refused" and bring it back to whichever carrier delivered it. They can use their own computers to trace the tracking number back to its origin.

  • @wandlbaker
    @wandlbaker 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +31

    I track ALL my packages ALL THE TIME. So, if I were to receive something "unexpected" there is NO WAY that I would scan ANYTHING on it. I know that unsolicited product is FREE so I don't need the packaging. Cost them money and get freebies. But don't give them ANYTHING.

    This is especially true if you receive ANY USB type device. NEVER plug in ANY device, charger, etc that is unexpected or found on the street, parking lot, etc. It is incredibly easy today for hackers to embed malware into the plug itself.

    I knew what a brushing scam was, but your particular scam raised another concern. That wifi booster could be preprogrammed with `malware` itself. You can probably factory default it and be okay, but I could absolutely see a scammer sending that preprogrammed so that it reaches out to the scammer, thereby allowing them to hack into your network.

    some delivery drivers are in on variations of these scams. one is to deliver something, take a picture of your house showing address, then have the sender email you to tell you your item has been delivered to get your acknowledgement, and a link to your computer.

    • @boines
      @boines 7 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      if that's driver is amazon fed etc once they bring package back to their van baited bc of the count and bar code gets alerted once package goes past the next stop. If driver hides it near house after guess what gps would show them going back etc. Bisted again. If it's fake package who cares you didn't order it they wasted the money etc. Plus if you hand it off to friend nearby the van picks it up nd know it's leaving area to. Found that out as well as other secure things XD.

    • @Dargonhuman
      @Dargonhuman 2 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      That makes absolutely no sense, if the scammer already has your email address why are they sending you physical packages? It would cost them far less to just send you a scam email saying your delivery couldn't be completed and to contact them about re-delivering it.

    My wife got a letter about a month ago from an "attorney" in Canada, we're in NJ. They used her last name and added the name "Bruce" to convince her that a long lost relative passed away in Canada and of course he was this and that and had all this money, alls you have to do is respond to the letter. It was like an absurd amount of money, like millions and millions of dollars, you'd think by now they'd have figured it out that using "500 million dollars" sounds way more fake than just saying "Hey, this is the tax office and you owe us $1000". 😆

      Many years ago I got something similar from a supposed African Legal Firm that actually was formatted correct, proper grammar, high quality paper, etc... like if it was real.
      Now I know my way around international commerce - and what most people don't know is that there are international companies that handle payments for international shipments. The way it usually works is that the buyer puts into an account the payment for the shipment so the seller knows that there is a payment waiting for them. The seller ships the product (often with photos of what is inside the continers supplied to the international payment company) - and tracking information is sent to the international payment company. After the shipment is delivered proff of delivery is supplied to the international payment company. The reciever has a limited time to submit evidence that the shipment was wrong or damaged... Assuming everything is good the payment is released from the international payment company to the seller.
      That is how a lot of international purchased are handled - unless you establish pristine international credit. It cost a bit to set that up.... but it eliminates all kinds of issues about people shipping product and not getting paid - and not having any practical way to sue someone in another country.
      Anyway, in my discussions with this so called Legal Firm I explained that they did not need my bank account information - that I had identified one of these international payment companies that had an office in their city (which was the Capital city of their nation). That I would set up an account with them (and pay all fees for that) and all they had to do was transfer my promised millions (of whatever currency it was in) into that account; and I would withdraw it here in the USA in dollars at my convenience (these international payment companies also convert currencies).
      They got so mad... and totally refused to use an international payment company who's office was within a mile of their office and absolutely demanding that I provide my personal bank account information.
      Lets just say that we stopped communicating after that.
      Just know that there are totally legal ways to transfer money intra-national and internationally without using a personal b bank account. Businesses have set up the infrastructure for all of this - and private parties can use it (and I used it to get some custom built furniture from Canada once).

    I would not suggest writing "return to sender" and sending it back because that may let the scammers know that the address is valid and they may try another tactic another time. Rather, just throw the item right in the trash. If you keep it, it could have some bug implanted that becomes a spyware tool against you. I know, tin foil hat, but you really can’t be too careful. Just throw it out.

    If there's anything in the package that plugs into your phone or laptop, bin that straight away, or store it in the garage or somewhere (just in case it is a genuine mistake and the sender asks for it back) safely away from your tech gadgets. Do not power it up or plug it in. Also, it's not your problem to return it anyway, if the sender wants it back, just drop it at the PO and let them sort the return.

    Most scams can be protected against with a good old fashioned application of common sense. If you didn't order something, don't accept it. Don't tinker with unfamiliar electronics, especially in this day and age where everything can be connected. That random Nigerian prince is not in fact willing to share his fortune with you.

    there are scams galore!
    have you heard about right house but wrong person?
    or right person, wrong house (takes a neighborhood accomplice for this one.)
    or starting your car by jumping through your headlight opening to the bulb connector?

    If you receive or are promised to receive anything you didn't intentionally try to obtain, it's a scam 100% of the time.

    I NEVER scan those QR codes, not for any reason. If the sender wants to communicate with me, they can either send me a USPS snail mail letter or an email.
    I do NOT will not scan those codes. Too much information they can get from your phone I keep hearing so NOPE,
    If someone sends me something, they just lost their money. If I didn't order it, I can claim it, because they sent it too me. Must be my Christmas/Birthday, whatever gift.
    Just how I see it. lol

    So someone plugging in the WiFi booster will take over the network, as the second level attack in case first one failed?
