Excellent video. Did a similar but not as good job on my HS4 recently, came across your video trying to learn more about them. Very useful insight into the parts. Thank you for making and uploading this
i recently bought myslef a mini and believe to have one of these HS4 SU carbs with the waxstat at the bottom...im going to attempt a service on this, never done anything on a car before but this video has shown its not as difficult as i thought it would be, brillaint video
Hi Dudley! Congratulations on your purchase! It's indeed not that difficult to service a HS4 SU carb for the Mini. Feel free to ask questions if you need help, I can also send you some pictures from the Haynes manual if you want them. Good luck! :)
Hi excellent video, I’m having problems with my mini pickup which has this exact same carb. It’s not ticking over right, also when going round sharp corners (turning left) it cuts out, do you think it could be the float? Also did yours run a lot better after this video? Many thanks
I also have the FZX1415 HS4 carb on my Mini. I recently bought an SU tuning/servicing book and although hundreds of SU's are listed, this particular one is not present in the appendix tables. Any idea what the differences are? Are you planning to show how to center the needle & do the "drop" test on the piston?
Hi, the differences between the FZX1415 and another carb of a Mini can be found here issuu.com/theshadybower/docs/su_reference_catalogue_16_2012. That's the only resource I've found yet. I'm not sure yet if I will make a video about that, as the Mini is completely stripped at the moment :)
Excellent presentation. Somehow I did not miss the voice or some horrible music ! I am assuming you did not remove the metering needle from the piston. Any reason for that ?
Thanks! I like to keep it quiet in the video's, just the essentials :) Indeed, I didn't remove it, as it was just a quick carburettor cleaning video. When rebuilding it with a kit, I would remove everything. I've bought a stage 1 kit, so the needle will be replaced by the one in the kit :)
Thanks Ryan! I've used 20W50 engine oil, the same that goes in the mini. You can also get the carburettor oil from SU themselves, but I don't know which viscosity that oil is. But 20W50 engine oil also works fine.
Hi from Chile. We are restoring a 1982 Austin Mini HL that has been unused for over 15 years. With what liquid are you cleaning the parts? This is a father and son project. Thanks.
Hi Andres, nice father and son project :) The liquid I'm using is just petrol, the same that goes in the car. It's not as strong as real carb cleaner, but in combination with compressed air it works. Good luck with your project, and have fun :)
Hi, the standard needle is the AAC one. (FZX1415 carb). I've found this to be a great resource for carb info: issuu.com/theshadybower/docs/su_reference_catalogue_16_2012 (see page 96-97) Btw, nice job on your Mini 25 restoration!
@@restoringaclassic9489 Thanks for that great resource! I'll be subscribing, very thorough video. Will you be doing bodywork too? Some voice over might be good on the videos too.
@Classic Mini shorts Thanks for the tips! The car will need a full respray, so it will probably also need some bodywork. But this will not happen in the near future as I'm enjoying driving it too much now :)
Hello, I've filled it 1/2" from the top where the damper goes in. Filled it with 20w50 engine oil, but you can buy oil specifically for SU carbs as well
Hello @Mini _Adventur, I've used the same oil I put in the engine of the Mini (20W50), this works fine. You can also buy SU dashpot oil, but I've never used it before.
This is the best way to show this process. No audio needed just clear video. Well done.
Thanks! I also enjoy watching video's without any voice :)

Excelente video, yo tengo el mismo carburador y no me atrevía a intervenirlo. Ahora lo haré con toda seguridad

@Nova Silas Flixportal xD
@Lee Christopher thanks, I signed up and it seems like a nice service :) I really appreciate it !

Hi, great video! but i have a question, What book did you use in the video to see how to assemble the carburettor again?
Thanks!
Thanks! It's the Haynes manual for the Mini. haynes.com/en-au/rover/mini/1969-2001
Very good video thanks
Great video thanks
Thanks. You’ve gave me the confidence to tackle mine.

@@restoringaclassic9489 you just use petrol and it comes out looking that clean!?!! Amazing
What type of degreaser did you use.
Hi! I always use petrol to clean carbs :)
@@restoringaclassic9489 OK thank you. I will do the same although its bit dangerous,
Better not light up a cig when cleaning 😅
