Brad Watson had a bit of a brain fart and mixed up the composer of the film. He thought Peter Bernstein composed the film instead of Charlie Bernstein.
This is probably a silly question, but were you watching the Blu Ray of this film, or at least a 29.97 FPS pull-down? I just often wonder about that, because if it was a PAL version, then the commentary might go out-of-sync. And, did you hit the play button the instant the film started?
@@OliverHarper Thought so. Thanks. ;) I would like to listen along with the film at some point. The commentaries and extras are things I really miss about buying DVDs years ago. Sometimes they were better than the film itself. lol I should start collecting Blu Ray disks, tbh. They are the perfect sweet spot for movie collecting, IMO, and having the physical disk rather than a download / stream.
This is great, Harper always there to rescue the day, this time with a _Nightmare_ commentary. I had done a Retrospective & Tribute video on Wes Craven last year, talking about his 40-year film career and how much of a massive fan I have been of him, very influential to me. _Scream_ will still be an old favorite of mine since I was a young dude.
My god how beautiful was Heather in this movie? She was actually my first crush. One thing I want to point out to you fella's is at the beginning with the girls jumping rope. Are they spirits from Freddie's past? Are they trying to warn people? Because you never see them again during that same scene when the Camera shows the spot where they were at. They Vanished. Makes me wonder who they were.
lunatiksAlterEgo Also it makes sense that Wes Craven wrote both my crushes in horror movies Nancy and Sydney from Scream. Him and Kevin Williamson knows how to write good females in horror.
Johnny Depps character does hint at the start that he has had dreams involving Freddy when he mimics the sound of his claws with the small rake. Also Freddys Revenge doesnt get enough credit. The main issues that people seem to have with it, breaking of the rules, male lead, the homosexual undertones, I think are great additions and really makes it stand apart from the rest of the sequels churned out just following the same formula. The fact that it focuses on possession and how that ties in with the main characters own repressed sexuality is something that was super progressive for the time and went over a lot of peoples heads who tend to just some the film up as "the gay one". I find myself returning to the second one the most over the years as I find the acting is much better then the first. Freddys make up is by far the best of all the films and he comes across as a lot more menacing. I think the kill scene where Freddy emerges from Jesse's body and stabs Grady through the door is up there with the Tina death scene from the first! Freddy actually uses his glove for the bulk of the kills....It also has a lot of unintentional and intentional humor. A lot of Freddys most remembered quotes come for this film, "you are all my children now". Unlike the rest of the sequels, except for New Nightmare it actually does attempt something different! Apart from a weak finale I think its fucking great haha. Much like Halloween 3: Season Of The Witch its nice to see a lot of people warming up to it these days.
I think the film initially implies that Freddy is targeting the kids from troubled homes like Nancy, Tina, and Rod, though Glen’s reaction when Nancy and Tina describe Freddy in the beginning betrays that he, too, has encountered him. Still, Glen’s home is much more stable and therefore doesn’t seem to be as harassed as the others, which of course is false when Glen is killed. Proof that no matter how stable your home and right you live, death and evil can still come for you. Perhaps also an unintentional allegory for AIDS, though probably too much of a stretch.
Funny enough, I was feeling bored for a while. Nice to know Oliver allow himself to know when I would tiresome of the same things going on in my living reality called life.
Another quality commentary. This is the second horror film (after Halloween) I remember watching with my dad and his mate in the 80s when I was way too young, and feeling terrified. I was hooked though, and by 1989 I was sat there by the pool on a family holiday in Kenya of all places, 8 years old and reading a novelisation of the first three films- wouldn’t be allowed these days ha You mention the complaints about Freddy’s Revenge, but I’ve always loved it- and it’s got better with age. Who cares they deviate from the rules, it’s dark, creepy, and the weird homosexual subtext only adds to it all when you watch it today. So much better than anything past part 3, when it completely went t*ts up IMO.
Nobody not notice the policeman who came in when Johnny Depp died, looked up at the ceiling......its the sheriff from Scream....lol.....cross universe?
Great commentary guys. I'm intrigued to know how old Brad is now though as he remembers posters for this film and it being in cinemas, I was only 2 when this film came out and I always assumed Brad was around the same age as me lol. The first time I saw a pic of Freddy was when The Sun newspaper gave away 3D glasses for the Freddy's Dead launch and they had a 3D poster of Freddy. Anyhows sweet dreams everyone and just a reminder to all my fellow Brits.. If Freddy comes for you just feed him some under-cooked meat pmsl.
Are you sure James? have you got a time stamp for when you think it skips? No one else mentioned it and I checked the audio thoroughly before it was uploaded.
I rented every single one of these when I was 12 and watched them in a single night-early morning to get over my fear of films. I was laughing by the end. I didn't particularly care for New Nightmare at the time though. It felt so out of place after seeing Breckin Meyer bounce up and down like Mario in 6. I really enjoyed the Alice storyline but I know I'm an outlier on that.
Nice to hear Brad's commentary on this. No offense to Duncan but it would have been fart noises and dodgy impressions that would have filled up this commentary track had Duncan been involved. Brad is a refreshing take on the films. Great he got to watch this film at a drive in! Wish they would come back.
Oliver Harper, destroyer of OLED displays! I love listening to your podcasts but I begg you Oliver! please change up the image every 10 min or so, with TH-cam not letting you listen on your phone without the screen being on it eventually causes screen burn. I love the channel but this little change would save me ruining another display.
Brad Watson had a bit of a brain fart and mixed up the composer of the film. He thought Peter Bernstein composed the film instead of Charlie Bernstein.
Well, that just ruins everything! I can't listen to this now.
Just kidding.
This is probably a silly question, but were you watching the Blu Ray of this film, or at least a 29.97 FPS pull-down?
I just often wonder about that, because if it was a PAL version, then the commentary might go out-of-sync.

We used the Blu-ray so 23.98/24 fps.
Funny, I remember it as Bernstain.

One of the best horror movies of all time in my opinion, probably the best American one. The concept is just so good.
Truly one of the best channels on TH-cam...

29:45 - "Everyone hated the second one."
Not me. Elm Street 2 is the one that got me hooked, even more so than 1.
Part 2 is a total Blast!
I'm not even watching the movie. I just need more Oliver Harper in my life.
WE NEED A NEW RETROSPECTIVE!!!! like if you agree
Just working on a R/R on Halloween (1978)!
Wow I literally just started watching this movie at home before getting a notification for this video. What are the odds.
This is a real classic, the others, some better than others are entertaining and imaginative.
Excellent commentary for one of the most underrated films ever made 🔥🔥🔥
Brad is a good addition to your commentaries! Just waiting for back to the future part 3 now
BTTF 3 Commentary has been recorded and will be available early November.
Awesome! Looking forward to listening to this today whilst working. I'm planning on watching Part III later this month.
Nightmare on elm street is my favorite horror movie of all time great review Oliver
I first saw that blue poster with Nancy sleeping and the silouhette above her at about the age of five. Then it was the most rented-out VHS for me :)
I'm gonna be watching this movie today, what a coincidence!

lol I had a crush on her too when I was a kid, although I think she looked better in noes 3 and in New nightmare.
lunatiksAlterEgo She looked much more grown up and gorgeous in new Nightmare I agree.
lunatiksAlterEgo Also it makes sense that Wes Craven wrote both my crushes in horror movies Nancy and Sydney from Scream. Him and Kevin Williamson knows how to write good females in horror.
This is better than the commentary that came with the damn blu ray!
Ollie is love Ollie is life
got to be up there in the all time classic 1980s movies!!
I was traumatized by this movie in college. One of the few movies that actually scared me.
Is there a Craven commentary for Nightmare lurking about somewhere?
Excellent!
Dance with the Dead is the artist who made the music for the trailer for the KICKSTARTER campaign. Now, what's the name of the track?

Robert said he put his body into a Gunslinger pose!
Just to ask would you ever do a commentary on a Arnold movie called Hercules in new york?

It's a shame we are stuck with the cut R rated print,The UK vhs is still the best way to watch it uncut.
Oliver my dude, what's the song in the intro? Also thanks for the video mAh man!
Why does this keep skipping, was it uploaded with a glitch?
Are you sure James? have you got a time stamp for when you think it skips? No one else mentioned it and I checked the audio thoroughly before it was uploaded.

HaHa. ..fart noises.
Robert Losier!
Imagine if this movie had no sequels.. Would it be even more of a cult classic?

Elias if you're part of my Patreon you can get the commentaries in audio format which will avoid you having to play them on a TV.
