    Just have to say that Matt Smith is simply wonderful in this episode. He truly gives the story the "magical presence" it needs. Along with the story's prop-master who definitely added to the magic.

    I'm not a huge fan of this episode, but I do think it's the characterisation Matt Smith's Doctor should have leaned into much more. It's much more distinct from Tennant, and doesn't have the weird sexual and violent undertones a lot of Moffat's writing gave him. I much prefer 11 as a man with a duality between childish joy and world-weariness

  • @yalieyal4362
    @yalieyal4362 2 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    I feel really bad for this episode... it was trying to mimic the last Christmas special and it suffers for it. A lot. Probably because it also wants to have its own identity, which results at 3 different stories all at once. Yeah its bad...
    Also it has a banger scene at the end with the doctor saying hello to the ponds, and then saying they always do was just incredible, and that tear like *DUDE* thats why the ponds and the doctor are an excellent pairing/trio depending on how they are utilized.

    This is the only Doctor Who episode that gets me ugly crying every time
    The scene "I don't want to see him die. Goodbye my love" and the confront of the kids with this reality is heartbreaking everything is so well acted and feel genuine.
    A grieving mother trying to stay strong facing the ominous news of an absent father. Plus, the star that was the only safe option to follow to get home is the nail in the coffin
    My favorite Christmas Special of all time
    I think if you have ever lost a significant one (your spouse, your liver, your dearest friend) this episode will echoe with you on a much deeper level. I do not have children but the sheer "let them be happy cause you know they are going to be broken afterward" is genuinely human and the guilt / and the dilemma of it all we can all relate to that children or not.
    I do not know if the ending is that bad for the scenario. The journey of the trio enables them to become prepared in a way to the reality of loosing someone only postponed i think it is quite positive.
    You still have the sake of the cathartic release but also it reminds you that this is a Christmas special. Having such a harrowing confrontation to reality is enough apart for being heartbreaking with the death of the father
    The cameo of the Williams was a bliss
    Such a good ending !...then why the 'd€&%( are they coming back trhough mini episodes when we witness the destruction of their relationship ?!
    Anyway thank you so much for this video

  • @lp-xl9ld
    @lp-xl9ld 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The main problem here is that there seems to be a mentality which states "A Christmas Special MUST have a happy ending." So Reg HAD to come back. And yeah, the "Moffat doesn't really want anyone to permanently die" thing pops up also. (Little did we know...)

Back when this aired it was a tad clumsy at times, but mostly little different from previous DW history, but Chibbs really cannot be subtle or effective in most areas under his influence, which is made more obvious when he is actually able to do good writing. Debatable. Dr Mysterio had many amazing Dad jokes in there.

      Doctor Mysterio is a superhero homage (Grant’s mask definitely looks like it was inspired by Kyle Rayner’s, which has proven a challenge to a few artists), which Doctor Who doesn’t usually do, so there’s not much to compare it to in terms of similarly premised stories. As it pointed out here, TDTWATW is heavily influenced by a famous novel right down to the episode title, and uses themes the show had recently explored at the time so there is a lot more to use as a comparison point. It even got a sequel in a comicbook miniseries called Ghost Stories.

    I didnt forget about it, becuase apparantly the ABC just simply love to adore to stream this episode live all the time. The rare occasion Doctor Who is on live and my family wants to watch it, it ALWAYS seems to be this godawful special.

    Yea I don’t love this one either, but the Inception pastiche of Last Christmas is so trite, tonally confused, and rife with unforgivable Moffatisms that I think it’s the worst Christmas Special of the modern series (haven’t seen all the Chibnall specials, though… maybe one of those is worse?).

    I liked that special as I did the others, but I am biased and stan Dr Who even the new one. Now the recent Flux series was the only good Jodi Whitaker series but that is Chris Chibnall's fault not her as she can act. Chris Chibnall did the Dinosaurs in Space episode under Matt Smith Dr Who and it shows how bad at storytelling he is.

    Does everyone Really hate this special though? I loved it. Granted, I'm a huge Narnia fan, and the ending is similar to the ending of Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang which I also love, so I could be biased here. I dunno. It's simple to understand, which is perfect for a Christmas special because a lot of individuals within a family will have to watch it regardless of whether or not they keep up to date with the rest if the show, and it doesn't take itself too seriously. Also, this isn't a power of love ending. Madge isn't able to carry the trees through the time vortex because of love, its because she is a biological mother, so she is literally able and experienced in carrying life inside her. Reg only gets saved by accident, because obviously a grieving widow is going to think of her husband when she thinks of home, and they were in the time vortex. Lovey dovey doesn't equal love saves the day.

    Honestly? I love your reviews and although I agree with much of this one, I take issue with two points. First - the children - their acting, to me, was on point, especially Cyril. I raised 3 children, and believe me - that’s how they behave (though not all the time, thank goodness)! I’ve noticed that you are very open about your dislike of children, which is fine, but I think it colours your judgment whenever they are featured.
    Second, the Happy Ending - this was absolutely essential for a Christmas Special centred around a family, and one that would be watched by families at Christmas. I completely got the logic of Madge and the trees’ life-force lighting Reg’s way home (similar to the wonderful scene in Apollo 13, where Commander Lovell talks about how his life was saved by iridescent algae after he lost his lights). Yes, it’s fantastical, but isn’t Doctor Who?
    One of the main points of a story like this one is to impart joy, whimsy, and wonder for all those children sitting around with their families at Christmas, not to make everyone miserable by permanently killing off dad.
    Doctor Who has plenty of dark episodes. For me, although it’s by no means my favourite episode, it did what I expected and deserves a better review.
