"I feel sorry for the earth's population cause so few live in the USA"
He isn't saying he feels sorry for Americans, it's moreso a sarcastic jab at evangelical conservatives who think the rest of the world outside the US is living is destitute.

dude, you did not get it, he actually got it spot on, the song is a critique of the whole American way of life, and shattering their beliefs, shattering what you are told to believe as an American which is a lie, so yeah at least foreigners can visit and get the fuck out of there, Americans are trapped in their belief system even if they leave their country, seen it first hand

Bad Religion is probably my favorite band, and it's nice to see someone cover it. They're _really_ good at writing lyrics, using words and metaphor that I'd even describe as poetic at times. They also make extensive use of vocal harmonies, which is extremely rare for punk.
It's probably already been pointed out, but this song is meant to be a criticism of American patriotism, and of evangelical Christians in particular. The singer is portrayed by the song as a either a hypocrite or totally deluded, claiming that Christianity makes America better than everyone even though that's blantantly untrue.
In any case, you've earned yourself another subscriber. :)

Greg griffin has a PhD has teach classes at mayor universities. Without taking credit of the band there all highly educated. Punk isn’t all angry anarchy a lot of punk rockers are thinkers an people with degrees . An many that don’t have degrees don’t meant there dumb there thinkers , they question stuff .

Great review! I found this explanation of the song helpful: “Lead singer Greg Graffin and guitarist Brett Gurewitz wrote the song in response to US President George H. W. Bush's comment that the US would win the Gulf War (the first one) because God is on their side. It's pretty much a satirical view on the general American thought that the United States is the most powerful nation in the world because it is "One nation under God."

This song was written because of what the first President Bush said during the Gulf War. That America will win because, "we have God on our side". It's also about American nationalism and using Christian values to try and enforce said nationalism. It's seriously a very good song that is still relevant today.

Backup vocals on this song are done by Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder. I saw Bad Religion in Seattle on this tour, Green Day opened, before "Dookie" 92/93? Anyways, Eddie comes out to sing backup vocals, and the crowd basically gave him the finger and booed him off the stage. Up the punks! Flashbacks! .

Glad you like Bad Religion so far. I agree this is a good first impression. You are correct in feeling that Tony Hawk vibe. A few of their songs were featured in a few Tony Hawk games. "You" (one of my favorites) was in Pro Skater 2, "Big Bang" was in Underground and "We're Only Gonna Die (From Our Own Arrogance)" was in American Wasteland. They're definitely one of the more accessible Punk bands that has stood the test of time. I recommend "You," "Big Bang," "Suffer" and "Slumber" (if you want a slower tune with good lyrics).

I feel like youre not getting the themes of the punk rock songs here because you dont know much about the politics and society that informed the genre...no fault of your own at all, and its interesting watching an outside perspective. I love that you said BR made you think because that was the exact topic of conversation on the bus with my punk rock friends on the bus back in the 90s. This song is a sarcastic approach to the American culture of self reighteousness and presumed supremacy prevalent in America "I dont need to be a global citizen, cause Im blessed by nationality" isnt a comment, its a judgment of "American exceptionalism" meant to set the tone.

Greg Graffin, the lead singer; earned his PhD in evolutionary biology first of all. A lot of people think he doesn’t believe in God because of the music and art that are displayed throughout his albums. However, that couldn’t be further from the truth. All he is saying is that we don’t know, but for entire history of mankind we have continued to destroy each other and ourselves over religion.

this whole song is about the "republican", "conservative" view of religion and Jesus. Greg Graffin, the lead singer, is a scientist and PhD professor at UCLA, I believe, and it's very much meant as materialist, anti-establishment music. One of my favorite songs is "Kyoto Now", which is has probably the most stereotypical Asian theme ever, but is about some really important shit.

And to answer your question, I think the song tries to expose the lie that (American) Christianity is enheritly benevolent, and that there are many evils hiding behind this. And of course there's the fear that this 'force' is so overwhelming that you might not be able to withstand it.

This song is about what happens when you combine religion, politics, and unfettered capitalism. It gets ugly quick.
Jesus would be pretty disappointed with modern-day American "Christians" if he came back today. Even in his own time, Jesus wasn't too fond of the wealthy. What would he think of our politicians (especially American right-wingers), I wonder?

This is a year old and I’m gonna comment anyway. The bridge of the song he gives a list of who the American Jesus is by describing all the bad things. The last line being, “And I'm fearful that he's inside me.” Evangelicals are tied really closely to right wing politics. They will say things like, “DEMONcrats,” as an example. Those individuals use religion in really poor taste. So, therefore “Jesus” is basically a really ugly person when you view it that way, since Jesus is supposed to accept all, right? You have to understand that most punk bands were Anarchist being the far left. The explanation for the song is that the “American Jesus" takes on the idea that God favors America, rather than other countries.
