What I would do: Warm up the engine. Take off the top. Turn the engine until slack. Tighten the four screws on the tensioner until slack is just gone. Turn the engine to look for more slack. BTW slack is when the chain can be lowered from the tensioner wheel.
If its the original cam chain it could be stretched mine was manuel tensioner didnt fix it so i put a new cam chain problem fixed
no tension problem on mine, but i cannot install the chain tensioner, because chain is too tight...
did this cause an intermittent rattle at low RPMs?
Yes it caused a low RPM rattle. Sounds as if something is loose and hitting the case. Out the manual tensioner from Z Enterprises and its all good.
Brian B, Did you ever get this sorted out? Im having the EXACT same problem. Got so tight i couldnt turn the engine over.
Have you checked your tensioner for failures. Just asking not saying it's the problem
did you ever find out if this is normal? I have the same problem
if it is a problem
Elliott Miller The tensioner was bad.

Automatic cam tensioner was bad. I replaced and it is all good. Put a manual tensioner on her.
