  • Another running session from Pickwick Yard my shunting layout, featuring some more industrial tank engines!
    You know what... it's been a while since we had a proper running session video on Pickwick Yard! While lately the focus has been on the modular layout, Pickwick Yard is still going strong behind the scenes. I know how much you guys love my little shunting layout so today I figured I'd film a quick running session with a couple of small industrial tank engines pottering about the yard.
    Today's locos are the Hornby 0-6-0 Austerity/J94 "No 49" and the Hattons Barclay "No 11". Both are industrial tank engines owned by the N.C.B. who seem to have taken over Pickwick Yard lately.
    Check out more running sessions right here: • Pecketts On Pickwick Y...
    Thanks for watching!

      Thanks Neil, haha yes! The engines may be be powered by coal but you need fuel for the workers too 😂 Thanks for watching 👍

      @@ThatModelRailwayGuy No problems, been watching your build closely and you have been one of the channels that have inspired me to jump back into the hobby after 35 years and decided to build a layout. Only problem now is things seem very expensive when you start out with no gear at all.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah fantastic, great to hear that! Yes I know what you mean. When I started this channel I was just getting back into the hobby myself and just accumulating all the tools and bits needed to get going was an eye opener in itself. Thankfully it gets easier as you go along since you already have supplies built up but I can see why so many people get put off! Best of luck with your own build 👍

    Another great shunting session - just what I needed this bank holiday weekend - thank you. Footage and music great - nice to see a shunters wagon and the J94 passing wagons to the Barclay to shunt (an advantage of DCC/ isolating sections on a layout !). Thank you and looking forward to the next one. Cheers 🚂🙏

      Thanks Simon! Yes using DCC has definitely given me a lot more possibilities to play with - it's something I've been wanting to try out for a while. Hope you enjoy the rest of the bank holiday and thanks for watching 😃

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy

      My pleasure, glad you enjoyed it. The baseboard is roughly 4ft by 1.5ft - it was originally a set of shelves but you could build the same track plan in a smaller space if you needed too. Thanks for watching 😃

      Hi Colin! Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it. I actually have a whole video on how I made this layout and while it doesn't feature a track plan, you can easily see the layout of the track before the buildings were placed: th-cam.com/video/AyVSXi7YXdc/w-d-xo.html

    A nice running session that j94 of yours runs very smoothly what controller do you use?

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! The J94 is a fantastic runner isn't it. I put a decoder in it recently so it's now running off the Z21 but it was just as good before when it was DC. Back then I ran it on everything from a Gaugemaster Series D to a cheapo Hornby controller from the 80s and it was always a brilliant runner at slow speed (as are all my Hornby J94s).
      Thanks for watching 😃

    Very beautiful running session. I 😍 the Bokeh scenes. I wonder, were these freight wagons in real life also that short or is that an interpretation by the manufacturer of these models?

    • @fredtedstedman
      @fredtedstedman 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Real life .

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, yeah I did try filming this with a different camera and lens than I normally do, so the shallower depth of field is much more noticeable.
      As for the wagons, as far as I know they're all the correct length. The Hornby ones are a bit generic but the Dapol mineral wagons seem to be a good representation to my (admittedly untrained) eye.
      Thanks for watching 😃

    Do you plan to add ground cover to Pickwick? You could probably make it a beautiful industrial scene

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Rohan, the whole layout is covered by a ballast mat with clump foliage between the sleepers to represent weeds. It's very simple but that was always the ethos behind Pickwick Yard where, in comparison with the new modular layout, the plan is to go all out on the detail. Thanks for watching and Subscribing 😃

    Suggestion for the next live steam since I can't attend since time zones, could you run the live steam mallard on the layout boards?

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Matthew, that's a great idea but although might be tricky to pull off during a livestream. I am definitely planning to make a video soon where I try to get the Hornby Live Steam running on the larger layout and who knows, if that goes well maybe it will make an appearance during a livestream in the future. Thanks for watching 😃

    That small grey truck (shunters truck?) when run on its own seems a bit jerky, do the wheels need an oil?

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Chris, it's actually the opposite. The shunters truck is very free running but the Barclay is quite jerky at slow speeds and all the vibrations/momentum is being transfer to the truck causing it to bounce around. You were on the right lines but just the source of the problem isn't as evident on camera. Thanks for watching 😃

    Hi I have a Hornby Resolven Grange but the Nameplates Came off I got it from the Footplate shop near me and it was second hand and I have A Hornby 9f evening star which was also second hand and I have removed the front pony truck from the 9f and I have taken the Granges tender and I have hooked the Front truck to the Grange tender Because the Front truck has a coupling and coupling hook and I am going to use my Austerity 0-6-0 to shunt the tender into the siding and the put the Grange on Straight piece of track and put it next to the siding so it looks like the Grange has been separated from her tender and put into a siding and the siding for the Grange has been ripped up and the only bit of track left is the bit that the Grange is on and the now she has been left without her tender and awaiting for an overhaul along with three Diesels that are also waiting for an overhaul which could be a while because My pannier tank and my Manor class are waiting to be repaired I have decided to get the Pannier tank Repaired first because all she needs is a Wire to be re-soldered back on whereas the Manor needs a Lot more done to her She needs to have her axle fixed and a touch up on the W and T on her tender it should say Great Western Railway but Some of the Letters have Rubbed off and she is looking a bit worse for wear

    Has Pickwick Yard gone DCC?

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Matt! Sort of... it's switchable in that I can simply unplug the DC controller and plug the DCC one in instead. Since most of my small tank engines have decoders in now it seemed to make sense to do that for this video. Thanks for watching 😃

    Is number 49 a quiet runner?

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I wouldn’t say super quiet but certainly not loud. It’s about average but remember that these Hornby/Dapol models are fairly old now. The one thing I will say though is that they’re super smooth and have great slow speed running for shunting. Thanks for watching 😃
