I had been on HRT since 35 when I had a hysterectomy. At the age of 62 the doctor told me I had to come off it. I was taken off and for the next 3 years my life was hell. Couldn’t sleep the hot sweats were worse than they had ever been and my mood swings were horrendous. I saw a different GP who was happy to put me back on it as the latest research now says you can stay on it for life (with regular check ups). My life changed within a very short time and although I still don’t sleep very well the sweats have completely gone as have the mood swings and I actually feel like a human being again. Everybody is different but please don’t hesitate to go back on it if your symptoms return. Life is for living and when I was not taking it I was not living the life I wanted to. Good luck and hope you get the results you want x

my mother is 91, put on it at 36 due to surgical menopause, still on patches now, in good health nothing wrong with her. she's tried to come off but goes immediately into 100 hot flushes a day mode. when that stupid study came out in 2003 with scary headlines and doctors panicked they stopped her script and she nearly died, we watched her age shrink and go mental from no sleep. She was put back on within the years end but had to sign legal documents can you believe it to say she understood the risk and took responsibility and has been happily going along since then. She now uses skin gel instead of Premarin of course. They tried to put her on antidepressants for hot flashes she told them to get stuffed she is estrogen deficient not antidepressant deficient. I swear she lost an inch in height in one year off them and I've never seen her so miserable, she didn't sleep well at all.

Hi Caroline. Really interesting perspective and it really highlights how little we all really know about HRT, in particular and most worryingly GPs! I was 43 when I went through menopause and for me is was catastrophic. Not only physical symptoms but the impact on my mental health which I think is often underplayed. My periods stopped and I went to my GP who was fabulous. I thought I needed antidepressants and she told me to try HRT first. Like most women 10 years ago, I was worried about implications of using something long term to balance me out, but as my fabulous GP said, historically, we were supposed to be dead by 40. We are living longer and no longer producing the hormones to protect our hearts, bladders and bones. Having the right medical advice is key. I urge anyone who is thinking about going onto HRT to read the NICE guidelines and try to get some balanced advice,. I don't intend to stop taking HRT anytime soon as I'm now 54 and have been taking it for 11 years .but I really look forward to following your story . Thanks so much for your honesty Caroline. I really enjoy hearing your perspective. :)

Same here. Although my periods stopped when I was in my forties. I am 70 now and haven't slept well since I was a child. I would say I have never had any menopause symptoms. If I did, I may have put them down to something else.

Thank you Caroline, I think having the conversation now in the open is so important. Women have struggled in silence for generations. My mother had a rough time of peri-menopause as I did. I argued with my Drs office for a year about Perimenopause support. I went privately to a Menopause nurse who told me what to tell my Dr and gave me a report to give to them. This was just over two years ago and life feels worth living again, my depression and anxiety is much reduced and a whole host of other symptoms are alleviated. The risk of breast cancer has been completely disproved BTW. Would be really interested to hear how you are getting on, since whilst your course of action may not work for me, it may be appropriate for people I know. Good luck. XX

This is very interesting . i was on HRT for 10 years from age 40 because i was suffering the same as you. it was lovely. gave my life back again. i had energy and no sweats etc. i thought "This is good".
then the doc took me off them when i reached the 10 year limit.
and oh boy did i suffer! not sure how it would affect you but almost immediately i had the sweats come back again. and this continued till i was over 65! i never went back again i tried to cope with it all
and it was like starting the menopause all over again! it's gone again now thank goodness. i am now 71. good luck with it Caroline. i never like to mess about with the body and all these drugs they say are safe and ok! i don't trust them myself.
now i have been told to go on statins because i have a small risk of stoke and heart disease because of cholestrol in my blood! i told them i will try and get that sorted naturaly by a diet! they are too eager to push drugs on us and let us get on with it.. no thanks!!

Hi Caroline. What an interesting video. I have never thought of discussimg this with my GP (although, I no lomger have a my GP any more. It is pot luck where you go and who you see here in Lancashire.) Not good. For the past few years, I have been struggling with knee pain. I know that you have this problem too Caroline. But the pain is now in my groin and all down my left leg. My knee also occasionally locks and I can’t move. My posture is awful. You have spurned me on into biting the bullet and arrange to see a doctor. I shouldn’t have to live like this. Thank you for sharing. I hope it goes well for you.

Hi Caroline, i started HRTwhen I 21,due to cancer. I was on and off it for nearly 40years .when i was booked for my first hip replacement. I was told to stop the HRT.....so i decided to research this...i was advised to do a gradual stop...so i worked out my own " withdrawl". I did this over a few months, and it worked very well . Fast forward and i will say i had very few problems.
    Good luck xx

Thanks for sharing your experience Caroline. I had a total hysterectomy 17 years ago when I was 53 and wasn’t offered HRT and didn’t even think to ask for it. I must be lucky since I’ve not had your symptoms in any major way only now and again I had little night sweats. The worst is the brain fog (especially in meetings where it was mostly men round the table) but I keep active with reading and sudoku and chatting with friends. I started the menopause in my early 40s although it took about 3 years to convince the doctor to do a blood test. I went on HRT nearly straight away and I found it did suit me. Except I was still having regular periods. When I asked about this I discovered the HRT I was on would give me a false period, although no one mentioned this at the time. Came off HRT and everything has be fine ever since. I know I am one of the lucky ones that I never suffered through the menopause. My poor daughter in law is suffering a lot at the moment and has really made me realise just how lucky I was. Hope everything works out well for you. Love all your videos.

Caroline, good to listen to you. I had the brain fog, sleep issues and hot sweats . I had zero blood tests but was sent away to put the patches on twice weekly. Last summer I was diagnosed with breast cancer , estrogen fed and told to come off it immediately. After surgery and a horrendous tablet I’m currently on for 2 years I’ve taken the decision to very much consider the holistic route which so far , so good and I’m comfortable knowing that I’m not taking a load of chemically induced drugs. The particular one I’m on can exacerbate osteoporosis which I’ve already had the onset now for several years. There are many natural alternatives that doesn’t feed estrogen but can help alleviate symptoms. It’s very much worth researching !

I’ve been on HRT for 2 years. Primarily went on as I had the most frightening brain fog. Really thought I was heading down the dementia route but HRT brought me back to normal memory and function. Really would hate to be without it now as I feel back in control. I also had hot flushes day and night prior to HRT but I could manage those. The brain fog was just scary.

Hi Caroline. Thank you for sharing your experience regarding HRT. I would love to hear any updates you may have as I too came off HRT in February this year (gradually over one month) after 12 years. I felt fine at first but then after a few weeks started with night sweat/hot flushes, brain fog, aches/pains and fatigue. I’m normally very active, exercise, eat healthy and don’t take any other medications but I’m ploughing on and working my way through. Maybe I should have thought about coming off in the winter time - makes sense. This is my experience. Thanks again Caroline.

I had a complete hysterectomy at age 24. I had hot flashes while still in the hospital and was put on premarin HRT pills. I was told I would get osteoporosis if I didn't take them. After 40 years I took myself off. I have severe osteoporosis anyway. I used to write down when I had a flash so I would know jow many I had in a 24 hour period. The most was 35. It was a awful but I made it. I am now 75 and still have some hot flashes every day but I can handle it.

I agree, it's a personal decision - your provider was great in allowing your prescription to remain in limbo, should you change your mind. I've been on HRT (estogen only as I had an emergency partial hysterectomy with my last birth/c-section, age 32) since age 50. So over 10 years now - yearly mammograms have always been normal. I have begun halving the dose, so far, so good. I do think the HRT has helped with arthritis as I'm just beginning to get it. Would love to hear an update & wish you the best ~

    Hi Caroline
Thank you for this video. I personally did not take HRT as I was advised against it as it was one of the causes of breast cancer . I had a hysterectomy for endometriosis at the age of 39 so went through the menopause and my hormone levels were ok Then at 53 I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia CFS and underactive thyroid gland which gives you brain fog and weight gain. My immune system is compromised due to this plus the fact I have a narrowing of the spine and a bulging disc which plays havoc especially in the winter or when it rains. It could be you have an underactive thyroid gland and need your blood checked as that causes weight gain.
All the best and see touch in the next one x

I think my perimenopause was far worse than the menopause. I have used Spanish sage for hot flushes but some women who have had estrogenic based cancers cannot take it. It worked for me and also helped keep my mind focused, I never suffered with brain fog before and don't now. My hair thinned being a hairdresser I knew that if testosterone is low in women in menopause, that can cause hair loss, it causes low libido and other problems too. It helps to eat testosterone enriched foods and lay off the heat and processing of hair - just a few tips for us girls! Good that you have an option with backing from the GP so you can start again if you feel you want to. You look lovely in yellow, you are the same age as me and I can relate so much.

Hope you get on ok Caroline. I agree with you, it needs to get out of your body and then give your body chance to readjust to the new situation. I was on oral combined HRT for about 10 years. It worked very well for me. I was then told that because I’m overweight I should change to transdermal HRT as that is much safer and has much smaller risk factors. So now I have a Mirena coil - giving me progesterone - and HRT gel. It’s all working fine, I feel ok and no issues. But I do wonder about the future as at 59 I’m definitely post menopausal now. I think when the coil needs changing in a couple of years, that will be the time to stop - although I believe many GPs will prescribe for older women because it does help with heart, bones etc…but then again that probably depends on the individual. Sorry for the ramble! Good luck and keep us posted!

I'm 60 and always refused to consider HRT as I believe your body is meant to do what it does naturally - that's just my opinion and I would never judge others for making a different decision. I always refused to take any hormone based contraception such as the pill or injections for the same reason. However the downside has been that I have suffered crippling and I mean really crippling anxiety and depression and insomnia which is still ongoing although it is improving. I had no hot flushes or night sweats so I suppose I was lucky in that way. Good Luck on your new journey x

Hi Caroline, very interesting video; good to hear about your experience. I had a total abdominal hysterectomy and removal of ovaries at 45. Surgeon said I would need 5 years of HRT as it was recommended if you went through menopause before 50. I talked to my GP and said I wasn’t keen to take it as I suffered with horrendous classic migraines due to hormones pre-op. She agreed to it as long as I took calcium supplements. That was 18 years ago. I still take calcium and Vitamin D3 daily and my latest DEXA scan was fine. I do find my concentration has deteriorated since the op, though that might just be my age now! Sleep is usually okay once I get to sleep and occasionally there is a night with none, but I have never regretted refusing HRT. I keep my brain active with puzzles, crosswords, sudoku etc.

Hello Caroline, couldn’t believe the coincidence of your vlog! I recently forgot to take my HRT Tablet with me on holiday, took my patches but thought like you, ah well, I wanted to come off it anyway so why not see how it goes now. I can honestly say the first 10 days or so were ok then I started to get hot sweats, sleepless nights and my tolerance levels were low. It didn’t take me long to get back on it, maybe I haven’t given it a chance to get out of my system completely but I didn’t like the result it gave after a short period of time. I have been taking it for around 5 years and I’m 67 - god help me if I still need it in my 70s 😂. Thanks for sharing I found your thought very interesting 😊

Hi Caroline, I started the menopause at about 42, had had one of my ovaries partially removed, was working full time and doing on-call extra duties as a radiographer, so needed help with the effects, and started taking HRT. This was years ago and many conflicting reports about whether or not it was good or bad for you. I probably was on it for in excess of 10 years, but like you wondered if I really needed it by then. I can’t remember that I had any serious return to problems, but hadn’t had severe night sweats but burning sensations as is my blood vessels were on fire - a bit like personal internal central heating! Sleep wise - I don’t think I have slept properly since having my daughter in 1975! The option for you to return to HRT is there, so just play it by ear! Looking forward to how you get one. Hope you had a good holiday.

Hi Caroline! Really love & appreciate you sharing your in depth feelings on women's issues such as HRT & menopause. Unfortunately my mom was of the generation that you didn't discuss these kinds of things, even with your daughter! Luckily I read up on it at the time, so many conflicting opinions out there, aren't there? I'm 65 now, but I remember the main reason that I didn't decide to try HRT is the possible link to breast cancer. It's possible that I could have benefited from taking them at the time, I guess I'll never know. Thank you for sharing with all of us, and please keep us updated. I took oral estrogen pills for five years after my hysterectomy, then switched over to Vagifem suppositories wich I continue to take 19 years later, one a week. They are low dose but are effective in preventing vaginal atrophy and bladder issues. I have no other symptoms, other than a bit of difficulty getting to sleep.

I'm not on HRT but have found a product on Amazon that helps you make hormones. I have been told I have osteoporosis, and walking has been getting more and more difficult. Found that a lack of hormones can make you lose your muscle support at your joints which was what has been happening with me. I'm on my second week and am not in as much pain but don't know how far this will go to stop this condition. I'm 74, soon to be 75 and don't want to go on any heavy-duty hormones at this age. So, I'm praying this works, and I can keep my mobility. I wish you much good luck Mrs. Caroline. The journey is different for each of us.

I’m way past my menopause (well over 15 years ago) but I never took HRT. I got hot flushes but not really extreme. My worst symptom has been vaginal dryness and I use a hormone cream but still not ideal. And insomnia.
I had recently been having major sleep problems (I’ve never been a really good sleeper anyway). I went to doctor and tried tablets but I was wary of those so I heard about the Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for insomnia - CBTi and asked my doctor. It turns out that a lot of GP practices offer it free through the NHS. It’s a 6-8 week online course and you keep a diary and they guide you through the steps. It’s a bit hard at times but it did work. Not perfect by any means but a whole lot better than before. If your GP doesn’t have the referral for it, it costs around £400 but I think it’s worth the outlay.
I just thought I’d mention it in case it might help anyone.

@@CarolineMrsM yes if you google CBTi it comes up with a few different companies. Mine was Sleepstation but there’s Sleepio too which I believe is ok. But check with doctor to see if they have a referral and if so which one. It certainly helped me.

Hi Caroline, yes, I will be really interested in an update. I am at the point where I may be going on HRT. there are some days when I literally feel like somebody has drained the life out of me. I have severe brain fog. Take care yourself.❤

I'm 68 and I've never been on HRT. I was never offered it. I got through the menopause reasonably well, just the hot flushes and night sweats ❤

I wasn't able to take any form of HRT. I was prone to bleeding outbreaks & potential heart issues that run through my family. So the doctors took me off of it. Fortunately, my menopause symptoms were very short. I still have the sleep issues but the women in my family have always had those.

I've also come off, too. It's been 2 months so far, no major worries . Brain fog, maybe a little worse ! Sleep wise, I'm taking magnesium Glyciate at night, and it's helped.

I stopped after six years and felt dreadful, my doctor put me on a “no bleed” HRT patch which was great but you can’t stay on it for very long as it’s not great for your circulation. I’ve had nothing but aches and pains since I finished with that.

When I came off hrt the nurse told me to take red clover and black cohosh and it did help the transition. I have been off it for probably nearly 2o years. I did eventually feel a lot better. However over the last year the doctor has put me on it twice a week for other problems. I just take it twice a week. Who would have thought at my age.

Can I ask what happened about your post menopause bleed, what was the treatment and how long was it before it disappeared. Just as I'm in the same predicament, but have been referred to hospital, like you were.Love your vlogs very honest. Thanks for taking time to read this.val.xx

Hi, it only lasted for a few days, I was seen at hospital within three weeks, had an internal ultrasound which was clear and then a follow up appointment with a doctor. Told to go back to GP if bleeding recurred after six months.

Hi, I think menopause is the big cause of sleeplessness, hot sweats, anxiety, depression brain fog. I suffered from all of them for about 5 yrs its a time of life . Good luck with whatever you decide to do❤

Hi Caroline! Thank you so much for this honest video. I think we started HRT at about the same time and I have also been thinking of stopping for "Do I really need this anymore?" reasons, plus like you my weight is an issue. Before HRT my main symptom was hot flushes which were not great, but I suppose sporadic and manageable. They stopped immediately when I began HRT. I am on a very low dose, 1 spray of Lenzetto a day plus uterogestan. I am due a consultation so planning to discuss a gradual withdrawal to see how I get on. I agree about the other benefits, but really for me it's the faff and inconvenience of the whole thing. I'm not on any other meds and I prefer being med free to be honest. It's a tricky decision isn't it? Please keep us updated. Xx

I went on it caused me to have a mental breakdown and made my underactive thyroid into overactive thyroid. Lidt over 3cstonecin 3 month's very ill.
Took over a year to return to normal after stopping it. Not for everyone. I was 59 . Doctors should have done blood test before just giving it to me. Worst period of my life.

Hi Caroline- thanks for sharing and opening up this very important conversation for us all. I feel education is the foundation that enables each of us to make the best choice for our bodies. I encourage ladies to watch Dr Louise Newson’s UTube videos - she helped me understand hormone deficiency which lead to my decision to take HRT. Take care and I look forward to seeing how you progress.

Thanks for the video Caroline. Would love an update. I too have had bleeding on hrt and am so fed up of it. I was on 3 sprays lenzetto and utrogestan so have reduced to just 2 sprays which is considered a low dose. If you go back on hrt perhaps consider changing to a different type as it might suit you better? x

Hi Caroline, thank you for sharing, interesting vlog. My experience with the bleeding was similar to yours but I didn't want to come off HRT because I thought the benefits in terms of heart health, reducing dementia risk and bone health outweighed the risks. I had a Mirena Coil fitted which gives me the progesterone component of HRT and then I just take oestrogen gel and i have not had bleeding since. Please keep us informed with your journey Caroline, very interested to hear.

As a lady of 76 and having seen a Gynae and a Prof of Gynae in the last week I would not go off your HRT. The thinking has changed and whereas Drs said you must be off it by 70 now it is carry on until you die. The benefits out way the negatives. So sorry I stopped.

Anyone know how to handle the brain fog? I push through but I really need my brain for work. 55 no Hrt - france where I live are not big on that and personally I want to let nature do it's work. Still having menstruation and that helps the brain fog when my hormones kick in.

I've never taken HRT i was particularly put of off by the Breast Cancer association linked to it so ive just put up with the hot flushes & the general symptoms that go with the menopause, I've found taking an over the counter Nytol tablet effective for sleep, these tablets are antihistamine based, they don't leave you tired in the morning etc..... My sister had been taking HRT for a good few years & earlier this year was diagnosed with Breast Cancer, she had gone for a routine mammogram & something had been picked up so was sent for a scan & it was the scan that picked up something else, the original sighting on the mammogram turned out not to be suspicious..... Mammograms in certain countries have now been banned due to false positives & their general inability to pick up real issues than scans would find.... Personally i think it's a good idea to come off, it can't be taken indefinitely so those symptoms are going to return at some point, if sleep is an issue I'd recommend trying the Nytol one a night, these are not the Herbal based ones as i found they didn't work at all for me

Thank you for honest and open chat. I'm in the process at nearly 53..considering going on it..still weighing up pros and cons. Its not a easy clear issue for me unlike some other issues faced. However, it does give me some comfort to know I'm not the only one going (roughly) through unlike some whom glide right over without any issues. And for them. I'm actually pleased for as its not pleasent. I'll end on this **again** thank you.

I have had success with brain fog by taking vitamin b complex. I use the solgar brand but any quality brand would probably work. I never went on HRT my doctor recommended I not because he considered the risks for cancer too great.
