The idea that's good for the story isn't always good for the player or the character. And i would rather die in a spectacularly memorable way in game than live and win.... and be forgotten by the party in a year because i played it safe.
Actually that's what I hated most about this scene. Matt came in with no real plan and he allowed the players to deflate the tension with no consequence to the detriment of the overall build up of the entire story arc.
I’m with grog on this one, enemies only call truce when you’re big enough to scare them of your potential, but small enough to squash in an instant if necessary
I loved how even as menacing and powerfully as Matt portrayed Vecna there were small hints of fear in him. Vecna was scared of Vox Machina, he knew what they were capable of and how deadly they could be even to a God
Giraffe that is only partially true. Powerful beings would also love a "truce" if it allowed them to get even more out of them that way. In this example it doesn't make sense, since there is nothing more to want for vecna once he is done with Vox Machina, but in other examples, with other villains, a truce might be more helpful even if the villain cut in fact really just murder them. There might be things out there bigger than the villain himself or the party, and a truce/alliance/servitude might help removing that other threat faster. TL;DR A Truce might also be interesting if they are only the villain's second or third biggest problem on the menu. they might help against the biggest problem if dealt with differently than killing.
Honestly, I think it's less of Vecna actually being scared of Vox Machina (he's too full of himself to be, at this point) and more of the Strahd mentality from CoS. He's so powerful and so untouchable that it's just flat out boring to outright kill the party. He has to play mind games with them first, otherwise it's just over too fast. One such mind game is to try and turn them against their friends and family first (thus the 'truce' and insistence that he's already turned some of their friends). He's the cat playing with its food before it eats them. What usually does villains like this in is their overconfidence. I really don't think Vecna began to fear Vox Machina until near the end of their final fight. But Grogg has a 6 intelligence, and Vax backs him up because he wants to try and bruise Vecna's ego... which I'm sure Vecna is used to adventurers attempting to do, by now.
When I first watched this scene, I thought Vecna was probably the least impressive villain so far since he shows up trying to intimidate them. It just came off as desperate and scared. Now watching it back, I'm pretty sure he was just doing it to amuse himself and wasn't really concerned with how they thought of him. Immediately after Ioun tells them about Vecna's hand, eye, and the sword, as kind of lame and unintimidating as it seemed the first time I watched this, Vecna showing up and *clapping* for them is kind of an amazing power play and I'm a little disappointed that went over my head the first time. He's a villain that only becomes really intimidating in retrospect after you see the full extent of what he's actually capable of.
I never noticed that... I forgot that his missing hand is considered an artifact. When did he regained his hand, anyways? Oh man, just imagine if Vecna had been able to regain his left eye. (It is his left hand that is typically missing along side his left eye?) I think that insanely hard battle that they had against him, would be even much more harder than it was. Sorry this is me just rambling.
@@KeiyarlaDraga I think it is traditionally his left eye and hand but I'm sure the specific side is interchangeable. I don't know if the eye would have enhanced Vecna or not though. I love the statue that Matt used for Vecna in the final battle. I would have spend the money to get one, if there wasn't for the fact it was a modified Warhammer miniature. I looked, and I found the miniature it used to be. It was still cool looking though. I give my DM too many ideas when I get him miniatures though. Probably because they were playing as vox before the show started streaming, they had a lo more time to grow into them. I personally love the freshness of the Mighty Nein, and I find myself more attracted to them than Vox, even though I've loved every minute of them.
I love Vox Machina but I definitely think overall I've come to enjoy the Mighty Nein more. I definitely think I prefer some characters for their players more then then VM. Like I loved Grog but definitely prefer Fjord. Travis gets to do so much more with him.
So now I'm in deep trouble. I mean, one more jolt of this death ray and I'm an epitaph. Somehow I manage to find cover and what does Vecna do? He starts monologuing! Every time I watch this moment, I always imagine Vecna in a black suit and tie.
Great edit :)
Thanks, this was one of the longest CR edits I have ever done with over 6 hours work put in:)
@@TPBurrow dang!! It's good work friend, you have a good eye. I've not long gone past this episode again and it's a great cut.
I like how the group is like: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
and Matt is like: haha XD
And Taliesin just grinning
Im so old I remember when the thumb was tucked in when sticking the middle finger up
Man I miss Vox Machina, I still haven’t connected with the mighty nein the same way.
Maybe someday...
You will...trust me
Vecna is one of the main antagonists in my game, and the rogue was finally tricked into implanting his eye 👁
Interesting trick to applaud with a missing left hand.
How dare you assume we do anything with Dignity?
The fuckin voice man, total old school Doctor Who creepy villain voice, the best kind if you ask me.
Everyone: WHHHHAAAAATT!!
Taliesin: Hello, my pupil.
7:21 Grog’s chuckle gives me life
I adore that Matt goes from this to then voice Vecna in dbd.
"I shoot an arrow at him!"
The balls on this woman! ;)
Leave it to Vax to the be the utterly childish one of the exchange, good zingers from Percy and Grog though lol.
Coming after binging mighty nein campaign episodes it’s weird hearing them doing their different voices for Vox.
Edit for spelling
2:50 travis and laura are adorable
So now I'm in deep trouble. I mean, one more jolt of this death ray and I'm an epitaph. Somehow I manage to find cover and what does Vecna do? He starts monologuing! He starts like, this prepared speech about how "feeble" I am compared to him, how inevitable my defeat is, how the world will soon be his! Yadda yadda yadda... Yammering! I mean the guy has me on a platter and he won't shut up!
I love the "welcome back" the voice is sooo good
i LOVE how everytime they thought vecna was listening or watching they would just flip off the air in multiple directions while having serious conversations, I adore these idiots
I bloody love this editing man!!
Thanks, It required 7 adjacent timelines and multiple right clicks to get this finished:)
the "new money" line is incredible.
vecna wins and becomes a civil servant... "i just wanted to make your lives better"
0:38 Everyone just shocked
I love how I haven't watched the first campaign so I have no idea why there screaming, it's just entertaining anyway
they're*
I'm glad he plays vecna in dbd "Join me in Death"
Why am I still coming back to this scene.
One thing I love is the way Matt scrunches up his face as he describes Venca's appearance to Vax, like even the DM hates him and can't stand his sheer presence
Matt: "29, woosh, passes right through"
Laura: "I knew it."
As someone who hasn't really watched campaign one and is now only watching ~level 4 Campaign Two, holy shit.
Yeah C1 ended in some epic stuff xD
But 29 missed because it was an illusion, not because it wouldn't hit
@@mordirit8727 Oh duh, of course. Thanks for clarifying =)
Vox machina: Vecna a chill lich
ST4: Vecna a eye ball suckin brain murderer
NOW I REALLY WANT TO SEE THE MARK HAMILL VERSION! Hi everyone!
“Pike! Why are you doing that voice.”
YESSSSSS I have chosen the correct video to watch!
