    Thanks for the tips. I watched the zero set video and this has helped me understand how to set and what to do to block when at center and left tackle.

    Yes tackles are responsible for the width of the pocket....but that just means they are responsible for making sure the width does not collapse inward.

    The coaching points were solid, however they left out when the drive catch should be used. Certainly not to the man side on pass pro, and certainly not with a cover guard when in man. Any decent defender will pick the tackle if he's not dragging or setting too wide. Even if they are square they will get caught on different levels. I believe this technique would be great to the slide side, or to an uncovered guard in man or jet.

      You need to learn to redirect their momentum. If you're facing a much bigger and stronger dude, you need to turn their forward momentum into a sideways pressure. Its like a ball rolling down a hill, don't take it head on, turn it into lateral movement.

    I wonder about the “drive catch” technique weakening my ability to defeat inside moves.
    I think you’re showing “drive catch” as an effective set for 7’s techs and wide 9’s. I’ll give it that.

      It is great to counter inside moves. Drive catch can be applied to any angle you are protecting. Against an inside move stay square and drive with your outside foot and catch with your inside foot as you cut the inside move off.

    The wider the defender the further the tackle splits...mike leach method..

  • @kozmosnotgay

    Doesn't widening the pocket with the drive-catch method create a gap for the defender to the inside? I figured the whole point for a vertical set is to prevent giving up the inside. If the name of the game was really just to widen the pocket, then why not just reach every time. If that end is outside contain, he'll just run out there with you. (Obviously joking) but My question is, does this not sacrifice the inside move MORE than the vertical set? Also, I understand your immediate response would be that they stay foot-to-crotch, or knee-to-crotch, but my point is that you are artificially creating a wider inside gap by kicking away from your guard.

      I too would love to know the technique on a DE that makes an outside-in move. Does my OT drive-catch (like a run block) back up and jam the DE into the guard?

    • @rockets5573
      @rockets5573 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Common knowledge of the game comes in to play (not trying to make you feel stupid) although we know if we’re kicking out thus far on a wide rusher we anticipate a speed rush or we anticipate the rusher to show speed rush and rush back to the inside. Now to answer the question yes you are kicking away from the guard due to the fact of the wide rusher. Tackles are on a lone island especially with the slide protection is generally away from the opposite end. So it turns in to a 1v1. Now in a real game setting if we kick to that wide 9 we are opening the inside yes, but once the wide rusher decides to take the bait of the inside, instantly turns into a punishable run block and put the defender back in to the lOS.

      @@christeed6924 this is old but I finally noticed a similar thing. In both the 2nd and 3rd rep in the "this is the better way" set, the defender lined up 1 1/2 yards further outside then he did in the previous "don't do this" set. The OT naturally went wider bc in both sets he told him to get knee to crotch. Nothing actually changed for the OT's own technique.

      In my small minded opinion: if you have someone wide outside especially really fast guys you need to be more vertical than gaining width. Or otherwise he can just outrun you.

    Wouldn't the ability to gain width in the test come from efficiency of the drive-catch method? Couldn't you still vertical set out of the drive catch method. I think the set largely comes down to ability the better the athlete your tackle is the more width he can gain. It comes down to intersecting the pass rusher at the widest point you can.

    having played highschool rg on unbalanced line 55 yrs ago where everything was different then what goes on today, i don't get any of this--as a L or R tackle, just don't let the rusher get by you--if you are bigger or more talented, you dominate--if smaller or less talented, then why is the cut block not used? is there an unwritten rule?--i was 165 pounds and pulling i did more than pass blocking, but i guarantee even a 240 pounder was not going to get by me. Also, although i was always in a 3 pt stance, if i played today, i'd throw that out--ridiculous to lower blood pressure and waste time coming up and out of 3 pt stance---fb is instinctive vision and actual vision--ya gotta know what is coming--is the rush inside or outside---ya gottahave the feet//legs to respond to what you 'see'

      @@Yaahboi52 obviously these people are modern pros & i am an old school only high school player, so what they say has to be respected. But honestly, i really have no clue what the point is here. I say that my previous statement makes sense. If this 'stuff' worked so well in maintaining a pocket, then why do D ends dominate most NFL tackles?--i say the reason is because they never cut block---there is nothing to slow down these very talented D ends--BTW, what i am trying to say, even holds for a guard--there really is no reason for a guard to be beat consistently. I must also say that this demonstration, yes by its nature, is not dynamic---meaning that the interaction of a rusher and a blocker has the element of fake moves--rusher fakes outside and goes inside, or v/v. The blocker can overcome that by making the fake move first---he knows if he pretends to favor the outside, the rusher will go inside and knowing that, the blocker can aggressively ATTACK--if he feels beat, he must THROW a cut block----SORRY IF I MAKE NO SENSE, BUT IT IS HOW I SEE IT. like i stated above, i was not able to handle one on one direct confrontation a bigger guy---i had to be creative--i see little creativity from tackles

      You’re not wrong. When I played LT on my team we always cut block and attacked, I remember pass protecting only once because we hid our passes…so the defense always thought we were running….lots of pass/actions/options. Modern day football emphasizes the use of the hands, hips for leverage; mostly because head to head is frowned upon. Same when I played DE, my job was to hit the tackle first, read the play while on the line scrimmage. My coaches did not like our DE’s blatantly rushing in as it creates a huge gap inside.
