“I Call Bullshit!” Jon on the PACT Act Being Blocked in the Senate

  • “This is an embarrassment - to the Senate, to the country, to the founders, and all that they profess to hold dear. If this is America first, then America is fucked.” Jon Stewart joined an impassioned press conference on Thursday, calling out Republican Senators who are blocking passage of the PACT Act in the Senate. The bill will expand healthcare and benefits for the more than three million veterans exposed to burn pits and other toxins during their military service. The Senate originally passed the legislation in June with extraordinary bipartisan support. The House passed it shortly thereafter, and it arrived back to the Senate on Wednesday for final passage. But a group of Republican lawmakers, led by Sen. Pat Toomey, decided to block the measure for purely political reasons, costing sick veterans time they do not have.

Republican Sen. Toomey said on the Senate floor that he voted against the bill because it would create $400 billion in unrelated spending
Seems reasonable to vote against a bill when someone slips in $400billion for things not related to what the bill is claimed to be for...
Even Democrat senate majority leader Chuck Schumer switched his vote to no when they slipped in all that corrupt spending. The news won't talk about that though...

Do not despair. Even if it is not obvious, you are well loved in America and many parts of the world.
What you have done has saved our families at your own cost and there is no job or profession in this world that can equal this sacrifice.
      But you must STAY POSITIVE.
Fight these SOB ‘representatives’ as far as possible without investing your emotions in them.

a lot of people act like they care to look patriotic and they also vote for politicians who act like they care about vets but it's just lip service, I'm tired of people not holding politicians responsible.
at least people on the Left are shitting on Biden and won't vote for him again, Conservatives were lied to about all kinds of promises, Trump delivered on none of it and they still love him, it's obvious they don't really care about actual issues.

Me too, brother; me too. I had to stop the video a couple of times. Luckily I only watch this kinda stuff when I'm drinking alone. I'm not against showing tears for stupid reasons; shedding water for genuinely important reasons like this always feels more personal.
I've heard that Mr. Stewart is a supporter, even/especially because of his stance against pointless wars (that do less for the USA, and more for certain entities within it); and I've also long been wary about the dubious morality of Sen. McConnell (in multiple, specific aggrievances to the nation) but this one still hit me hard. I'm working in Japan in order to bolster relations between these two great cultures; and glad I'm geographically in a position where I don't have to exercise physical restraint against my more "patriotic" impulses when news like this hits. Still, I'm there with y'all in spirit. Even if I decide to never return to U.S. soil, I continually pray that the U.S. can finally be *allowed* to live up to its sacred promises...

Our govt, scratch that just about all govt has been taking advantage of its soldiers since Ceasar crossed the Rubicon. Promises promises promises are the only thing they can do baring a draft to get able bodied men to sacrifice themselves for their cause.
I graduated in 07 and so many of my friends joined the military, 9/11 was still fresh in our minds recruiters were hounding every high school event we had making all kinds of claims that sounded too good to be true. Out of all my friends that joined only 1 doesnt regret it and made a career out of it. Point is they took advantage of you guys just like they've always done and always will do. I just hope you're one of the few vets that actually see which party is actually standing up for vets rights not that they're doing a good job of it but 9 out of 10 times if benefits are cut or voted against it's a Republican that's doing it. HOWEVER, here's the issue with ole Jon... he talks out of both sides of his mouth... he's here railing on a great cause that every American should be in behind - to support those who were in a position to potentially have to risk life/limb to defend our way of life and freedoms. That said - Jon has an Apple TV show... he also has been very active in trying to promote himself over the past year to get himself back on the map - he sees that Bernie petered out and there exists a space there to carve some serious coin$. Jon was all for flag kneelers like Kapernick, and others who burn flags... you can't be for Vets 100% and then turn around and be crapping on them at the same time. Jon is fake - Jon is out for Jon... Again - this is a great cause - and this bill shamefully with a hung head - should have been unanimous bi-partisan support... but Jon is just a mouthpiece to get folks who want to protest and rail on the government anyhow - he's looking to cash in on them.

Jon has had a history of supporting these types of causes for decades. He fought year after year for 9/11 first responders and recovery crews who were plagued with sickness and/or death due to the toxicity of “the pile.” His tenacious push back against GOP roadblocks would enable lifelong healthcare and compensation for these sacrificial heroes and their families and was integral to the success of the movement.
Jon started his quest with a cadre of four or five first responders who became his personal friends. By the time they were victorious, it was a rather heartbreaking victory as all but one of John’s original compadres succumbed to cancers, a direct result of their heroism on that day and the days following.
Stewart is such a good man and we need to get on the horn and lend our voices towards support of this cause.

You are not alone. I don’t know you, but you are my brother.
As a fellow vet, and wife of a vet, I know how frustrating that whole benefits system can be. It takes a ridiculous amount of jumping through hoops, finding and filling out forms, seeking documentation, and then waiting, and waiting some more-only to have a crazy, unjust, backwards rating and points chart make a simple service connected injury or disability feel unimportant, and our health devalued.
You can’t let the system wear you down. It’s designed to encourage you to give up. Make them keep the promise. There are several vet groups who can assist you in re-filing and in pushing back on interpretations that are causing undue suffering and pain.
Have the will to find a way.
It has definitely helped us to join other vets groups; we have learned through their experiences and even found advocates in the fight for our promised (contracted) healthcare.
The squeaky wheel gets the oil. Make noise, advocate for yourself, find like minded fellow vets, document names, dates and responses. Follow up and make some more noise.
Do not accept ‘no’ as an answer. Go around, under, behind, through or even over whatever obstacle is in the path to proper care. Re-submit the claims under different terms, along with supporting docs and letters from healthcare providers. Proof of exposure or injury, as well as documented symptoms and effects on your daily life are critical.
I don’t know you, but I stand with you. Always.
You can do this. One boot in front of the other.
Peace on you and yours brother.

The problem with this bread and circus spectacle politics is its acquiescence to the root of _all_ of these issues which has uncoincidentally become a third-rail to even mention in any context other than utter reverence: capitalism.
It's no coincidence that our bipartisan blackhole "defense" budget passes with ease to implicitly/explicitly enforce this now global financial "order" through the 1,000+ military bases worldwide and toward the perpetual benefit of US corporate/finance capital at the zero-sum cost of the working class (not to mention the planet that we're consciously destroying at this point...), meanwhile a modest domestic spending bill or god forbid even the most basic of healthcare for the people that actually make this shit produce any sort of life worth living is callously thrown at the wayside. As Eugene Debs put it in his WWI protest speech that got him incarcerated under the Espionage Act (a mere year after its passing, the same one that is extraditing Julian Assange despite lacking any sort of legal standing, "funny" that), _"yours not to question why, yours but to do and die...that is their motto."_ The empire feeds off the republic.
The US is the global hegemon and has positioned itself as the "consumer of last resort" at the end of the global supply chain (which we enforce/coerce militarily/financially) to absorb inevitable overproduction of capitalism through cheap consumption or of course through our favorite activity of war and arms sales (military Keynesianism, the only button we can push at this point clearly). We accomplish this through the Bretton-Woods international financial system, leveraged by the US post-WWII by being the only industrialized nation-state _not_ bombed to shit and effectively taking the imperial baton from the British and their pound sterling, cementing the dollar as the "global reserve currency" and through the IMF/World Bank and its post-71 (Nixon shock) -debt peonage/resource/labor control austerity policy- "structural adjustment" programs lend capital in dollar loans under the stipulation of absolute control of labor/markets/resources by US corporate/finance capital; "an offer they can't refuse" - any nation-states refusing to bend the knee like Cuba (see: Operation Mongoose, Northwoods, etc), Venezuela (sitting on the largest oil reserve in the world, what a coincidence), Iran (which we couped in '53 installing the Shah to prevent oil nationalization, shocker, Operation AJAX), et al. of course gets unilaterally sanctioned and excluded from the global trade network run at our behest at the minimum, but also perpetually coup-ed by the CIA or just overtly invaded. Even a passing glance at the CIA's "regime change" operational history will reveal this grotesque rise of empire akin to the optimates of the late Roman empire but with guns and nukes along with their imperial function as effectively the SS 2.0 (far from hyperbole, there's a direct continuity and overlap of interests, see: Otto Skorzeny, Klaus Barbie, Reinhard Gehlen, and others - _literal_ SS put directly on the CIA's payroll post-WWII for their anti-communist bona fides; also Operation Gladio which upholds the glorified protection racket that is NATO through stoking public fear with spectacular acts of terrorism, the so-called "strategy of tension"). Red scare(s)/Taft-Hartley having hollowed out the heart and soul of labor power in the US provided by the New Deal and as a result, much like your populares movement of the Gracchi bros and later Caesar being crushed by that Roman oligarchy for crossing the _actual_ rubicon of debt cancellation and land redistribution, you have an empire desperately lashing out to maintain its gradually waning influence, and whatdya know, both of these historical clampdowns of class war stemming from the senate as its no coincidence it shares its name but rather an explicit homage to that Roman empire (also see: Federalist Papers to see what the -counterrevolutionaries- "founders" actually intended contrary to our ubiquitous mythology; Charles Beard is good here too). Also reminded of CIA director William Casey regarding the efficacy of Operation Mockingbird and conscious intention to hide this empire (shoutout to Daniel Immerwahr) and its revealingly grotesque "cold" war history:
_"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false."_
Surely he's giving two big thumbs up in hell, which at this point is probably hard to distinguish from the world he helped create for us, but I clearly digress...
In the larger context of colonialism with a historical continuity that extends to modern day global US corporate empire, veterans broken as people from the visceral reality of war are merely further utilized from a callous "realpolitik" social control mechanism of empire to be sublimated into policing, black neighborhoods correctly identified as "internal colonies" by Stokely Carmichael, but this is a technique that has been cultivated since the days of Aristotle, the bonus army march on Washington (suppressed with m1917 _tanks_ under a young gen. Patton I believe, also check out Maj.Gen.Smedley Butler who basically played a similar role Jon is here, except having also plundered the global south in the banana wars lol?...though he later realizes this in the "business plot" _actual_ fascist coup plot by wall street to overthrow FDR which he promptly exposes realizing his role as a fixer for the "gangsters of capitalism" - Jonathan Katz has a new/good book on this dude titled Gangsters of Capitalism, ok I digress again sorry), hell the freikorps in Germany suppressing the 1918 revolts (later formalizing as the SS, shocker), Mussolini's black shirts and the March on Rome, it's all the same beast, a "common ruin of the contending classes" justified via a vague abstract appeal to "freedom" without asking who exactly that freedom is for and for what purpose. _Cui bono?_ *Who benefits?* Literally the only question of politics.
The answer being profit for the capitalist class in our contemporary context, inherently at a _purely descriptive_ (ie _not_ normative) level a zero-sum loss to the working class, and of course at the cost of quite literally everything else considering ecological crisis and the ubiquitous social miasma that ripples and reifies as this soulless mechanical logic of capital accumulation for its own sake marches on, and as we serve it blindly even as it not only fails to serve us but in fact leads us only toward a thanatos embrace, an ouroboros of resentment and its corresponding callous cruelty, hollowing out any social trust/meaning to be sold for profit at every available opportunity along the way. As Rosa Luxemburg proclaimed before being executed by that very freikorps paramilitary consisting of hollowed out WWI vets, at the behest of Ebert's ostensibly "social democratic" SPD party (which continues to sell out the working class of Germany under Scholtz) the only true choice for society is:
      *_socialism or [continued] barbarism._*

@@toxicblackman Oh, I believe I know, at least a little. My own father served in Vietnam, and just came back home from a triple bypass. But the only hospital that would treat him was 90+ minutes away, so he suffered his third heart attack the entire way there. The surgery is fairly routine these days, but they put a man infected with covid in his room on day 1, so he needed to wait a week of constant negative test results before they'd touch him.
I get furious whenever that garbage pretends to stand with veterans, or even just Americans. All their rhetoric revolves around finding new ways to shit on Americans, and they have *always* refused to do right by the people who put their futures on the line. It's absolutely disgusting.
I'd normally use much more colorful and foul language to describe how I feel about them, but TH-cam tends to auto delete those posts. But I do understand, at least in broad strokes. I've watched my own father grow from the man who showed me what strength of character and moral strength were be reduced to a tiny man who gets winded if he talks too long and can barely do much more than walk to the head a few times a day. I'm thankful to be close enough to lend him as much help as he can take (the old school ones would never admit to needing help), and I hope you or someone else in your family is able to say the same. It breaks my heart to know that I have better health care than my father, and I knew I wasn't going to serve before I was even 13.
Best of luck to you. I don't know if you've ever been close with someone suffering alzheimers, but it isn't going to get much easier than it is right now.
