I really think I was born at the wrong time. I have endless fascination with the 20’s Los Angeles and Hollywood. Must have been paradise on earth. Lots of land, little congestion.
It was so different back then. There were simply miles and miles of open land everywhere. Even in housing subdivisions, maybe 3 out of 20 parcels were built, the others vacant lots, and with no mature trees and landscaping, you could see miles across flat land from your front door, no trees or other homes blocking your view
I feel the same way about wishing I could go back in time and see L.A. in 1910-1970 especially the early years. Ogres up in Westchester, next door to Culver City. Born in '65.
Excellent video. Grew up in L.A. and grandparents buried in Culver City overlooking a studio. I've been to so many of these locations or driven past them. There is a lot of history for sure. The entire L.A. county area is full of many on location sites, but these early film ones are amazing to see and compare with what we see today.
As someone growing up in Los Angeles watching Laurel and Hardy and with a job driving all over the city this video warms my heart. So well done I appreciate all your work. As you get older your memories get warmer. Thank you very much for making my day.
I love the maps and simple animations. My dad worked for a small aerospace company in Culver City from about 1964-1989. In the early 1970s he drove me there a few times from Orange county to show me where the Tarzan movies were made. In the 80s when VHS came along, I watched a lot of silent movies from the pre Blockbuster rental stores.
Great video. I grew up in Westchester, next door to C.C. and my grandparents home is on the other border of C.C. near Hamilton High Scool in Beverlywood. I work as a subcontractor for all the major studios for location shoots for film and tv. I also do work for the smaller studios. I did some work at the building they call Mack Sennett Studios but its actually the building that the actress Mabel Normand started her own film studio. It has been a working atudio ever since. I live down the street from the property which was the actual Mack Sennett Studio on Glendale Blvd near Alvarado in Echo Park. Working on locations around the City and County I get to work on so many famous places and historical places, houses, restaurants, hotels, theaters, etc... I always think about how beautiful this city must have been in the teens and '20s and '30s. All the open woodland, creeks, ranches, rivers bean fields, and farms. It must have been wonderful. I get that nostalgic streak when I m in places like PickFair Manor many years ago before it being remodeled, Greystone the Doheney Mansion, the original Doheney Mansion downtown, The Biltmore Hotel, so many places that are iconic. Some people get starstruck over celebrities, I get tha way over the historic homes and buildings. The history of this city albeit not very old, is fascinating. Thanks for your work keeping the history alive.
@SilentLocationsbyJohnBengtson --- you are so right. When I watch any film or TV show from silent era to this day I always pay attention to the locations and look for buildings, landmarks, etc... to figure out if it was filmed locally. There are always the usual places for instance or example Vasquez Rocks off the 14 freeway. It has been used in Sci Fi films and TV shows as some other planet and countless westerns filmed there and some suspense and horror movies.
Awesome I know Culver City was also home to many Our Gang and Little Rascals episodes. I’m in OC and need to spend a few hours there! Thanks for this great documentation!
Great work! I lived across Venice Blvd when I was going to UCLA in the 80s but never knew about the history of Culver City (despite being an extra in movies, one of which was filmed at the former Ince Studios). Wish I would've know all this back then.
If your looking for your next project. the very steep hill on overland was used over and over again for the "runaway wagon, piano etc. It qa shaved down sometime in the 70's to make it less steep
Yes, thank you. Silent comedian Monty Banks filmed "Flivver Wedding" along Overland in 1920, long before Our Gang and other early Hal Roach stars filmed there. I created a video about Flivver Wedding I hope to post here someday
Yes, the stairs, honored by the City of LA, still stand next to 937 N. Vendome St. Do an internet search for "The Music Box Steps" and you will find dozens of reports
The good old days . I grew up a couple blocks from main St still do so much fun growing up in Culver City in the 60s and 70s
Great to see that at least a few of the key landmarks remain today.

Fantastic work!! Excellent video!!
Wonderful trip back in time. Awesome details, truly remarkable video! Thanks for sharing.😍
John it makes me so happy to know that there is someone who finds this location stuff more fascinating than me, and you are a master at presenting it.
Wow. Great job, great production. Thank you for taking the time. Cheers
Lot of work, thank you.
Wow! It looks to be the same light fixtures! 8:25 So cool. Thank you. What a joy to see landmarks that still remain.
That does look like the same light fixtures, very cool - thanks
Many thanks for sharing this information of the filming locations. Keep up the good work.
Nice video, you did a lot of research and presented it very well!

Now this was worth the watch!!!!!!
Truly, an unbelievable chronicle of Laurel and Hardy and Culver City. Thank you!
I used to work where Hal Roach Studios was located. There was a small plaque on the corner of Washington Blvd.
Used to watch these two with my dad! Lots of fun!!

Thank you - time doesn't stand still, but so many beautiful and historic places are captured in the background of silent movies

Thank you for a look back on classic movie locations of my favorite stars!
I love your videos. I use Street View to line up your videos while I watch. Thanks again for posting.

Really fantastic research!!! This is the best I've ever seen! With a wonderful and intelligent approach! Kudos all around!
oh wow, so much remains and its so good to see it all as it is now. Thanks for another gem of a clip
Fantastic. For a history buff this is an enriching documentary.
Top notch!
Walked or driven most of those areas for years and never knew. TY.
Another awesome video, John! I love seeing the early history of Hollywood and L.A. ❤😊
Amazing research, well done
Thanks for your great job!!👍
Really precious...for History.
Grt info sir tku👌👍👍

Thanks - it's great the Ince Studios front office is still there. I went to UCLA early 80s, but had no idea back then, missed the chance to see it
Awesome
I grew up in Culver City in 80's, wish I knew about the history back then. Good stuff
1:30 Hal Roach with one of his two Duesenberg roadsters......

10:39. That's amazing.
I'd love to know if that hilly neighborhood of houses still remains from Laurel and Hardy's comedy about piano movers.

Excellent stuff! Can you do ones on Keaton, Arbuckle, Lloyd and Chaplin?
Thanks - check out my TH-cam channel, lots of other videos about Chaplin, Keaton, and Lloyd
Stan Laurel jumps for joy at the ladies, or was that a stunt double?
They were very athletic, jumping and falling over all the time, so I doubt they used any doubles here
Under the Rainbow with Chevy Chase was filmed at Culver Hotel too, across from Big Ed's bar
Animal House and Buster Keaton's The General both filmed scenes in Cottage Grove Oregon
Another fine mess.
