    Frank Miller once said: "He's clearly a man with a mission, but it's not one of vengeance. Bruce is not after personal revenge. He's much bigger than that; he's much more noble than that. He wants the world to be a better place, where a young Bruce Wayne would not be a victim. In a way, he's out to make himself unnecessary. Batman is a hero who wishes he didn't have to exist."

    I think I understand what Matt Reeves is doing with his potential trilogy of movies. Taking the famous quote from the legendary Kevin Conroy (R.I.P), he starts off as "Vengeance".
    The second movie, I believe will build him up as the "Knight", instead of the night (since he's almost fully assimilated the dark already) as well as playing off the quote itself. Finally, he becomes a more complete Batman, implementing the mask of Bruce Wayne into his cowl and becoming the legend he is and will remain

      @@alejandromelendez1609Bruce Wayne is absolutely a mask buddy. And if you know anything about Batman then you know that Batman is who he’s actually been since that night in Crime Alley when he was 8 years old. He just uses Bruce Wayne for what Bruce can do for Gotham with his wealth and resources. But he gave up trying to actually live as Bruce Wayne long ago. And this is why Alfred gets upset and pleads with him to actually try to have a life as Bruce. But Alfred knows he gave up being Bruce long ago. This is what separates him from other superheroes. In an episode of Superman the animated series Clark told his parents that he loves being Clark and that he would go crazy if he had to be Superman all the time. Superman is his job and it’s what he feels is necessary to help change the world because he can. Whereas Batman is all that is left of Bruce Wayne. The man spends all his time as Batman down in that cave. He only becomes Bruce Wayne when necessary to be seen in public or run Wayne Enterprises and throw people off his trail that he is Batman. Other than that he has no use for Bruce Wayne. And that was stated at the end of Batman Begins when Rachael says……”No THIS is your mask”……The real you is the one that criminals now fear”.As she touches Bruce’s face. That scene perfectly sums up the difference from Batman and other superheroes. All that matters to Bruce Wayne is what Batman has to do for Gotham City. Nothing else

    real talk, I'm someone who doesn't even care that much about Batman. I went to see this movie bc I heard it was a standalone, no cinematic multiverse callback tie-in homework to watch before hand and I was in AWE the entire time. I loved the grungy gothic atmosphere that reminded me a lot of the SAW movies, I loved the ferocious score AND the repeated theme of the Nirvana song, I loved Catwoman's existence. But most of all I loved Pattinson's light-shunning, vampiric Bruce and downright spooky Batman. He nailed the role of a man who thinks he has to save the day alone, letting it get far too personal - but realizes that he can effect more good in Gotham if he instead protects and helps people who can do more, little by little in their jobs or daily lives than one broken rich kid with a death wish. Him in full scary bat-gear reassuring that terrified injured woman before handing her off to the paramedics - the professionals! - was what sealed it for me.

    This Batman just feels the closest to the books. The persona isn’t the same, this Batman is much more on a hair trigger, angrier and less composed, but that parts that make The Batman are all there and intact. Bale didn’t capture that foreboding rage, that’s why I think he had to put on that voice. He never had that hair trigger to insanity that Keaton and Pattinson captured. Pattinson beats out Keaton because Keaton didn’t capture the other side of Batman, his compassion. Pattinsons Batman feels like the Batman that would sit next to Ace on the swing.

    To me he is. It's literally all there, all the aspects of his comic book counterpart. All the complains or nitpicks that one could possibly make are easily answered due to the fact that he is a new Batman, one who doesn't even know how to be Bruce Wayne yet; an aspect that will be explored in the future as he evolves. He doesn't kill, he makes it clear ( I love Affleck, but thank god.) He's the Detective, we've hardly seen that before. Though some may argue that he was slow or dumb in solving the crimes, Joker answers why that is as well in his deleted scene. Another argument that comes up is his body shape, Batman has been drawn a thousand times, bulky or as an MMA fighter, I assure you that he has been drawn this way so many times, we've seen it. For a Year Two Batman in a more grounded reality, he is extremely accurate.
    Also, just look at that chin.

    Jim Gordon and Batman in this movie was 🔥. For strangers they were in sync. Batman and Catwoman was also great, their chemistry was very well exposed throughout their scenes, my only issue was his relationship with Alfred and his persona as Bruce but then again it’s all justified too him being green, naive and still young. I’m excited to see his progression in the Batman 2, if robin were to appear in the 2nd film I’d love to see character development in Batman develop through becoming an instant dad and learning a whole new level of responsibility with Dick.

    You pretty much nailed the very nuances that Matt Reeves was going for in this version of the character, and the fact that all the mistakes he made in the film are very *deliberate* . Reeves mentioned very early on that in past Batman films, the villain always takes the spotlight away from him (see Heath Ledger as Joker in TDK, for which he won an Oscar), and he's right.
    Reeves is setting out to make Batman the main focus of his films by showing Bruce's evolution to *becoming* the hero that Gotham knows him to be. And as it was depicted in the first film, he *will* make mistakes and have to learn lessons along the way.
    This film isn't for those with short attention spans who just expect there to be fight scenes, car chases and explosions every five minutes, with Batman doing minimal detective work along the way to predictably saving the day at the end. Reeves' Batman has to earn his stripes by doing the work. He doesn't classically win by the end, because his wins come from learning how to be better within himself. That way, he can *do* better for Gotham.

  • @The_Phantasm
    @The_Phantasm ปีที่แล้ว +141

    I definitely think that he is the best live action Batman. Michael Keaton, while very enjoyable, I never thought he was amazing as Batman and that's coming from someone who grew up with him. I mean even in his movies he is not really the most interesting character but that's really more of a writing problem. Ben Affleck had a lot of potential to be the best but unfortunately his Batman was surrounded by terrible writing. For Bale while I thought he played Bruce Wayne really good I honestly don't even like his Batman and I also really do not like any of the Batsuits he wore. I think a big part of the problem is built into Christopher Nolan's understanding of this version of Batman is that he doesn't want to be Batman, he wants to end. I mean it's built into the premise The Dark Knight even, and so this leads you a lot of problems because the concept of a Batman who doesn't want to be Batman is extremely antithetical to the source this has never been a recurring thing in the comics that Batman doesn't want to be Batman, that he's looking for reasons to retire. This unfortunately solidified that version of Batman as just a Nolan character and not really an adaptation of the comic book character of Batman. However nothing will ever top Kevin Conroy or Mask of the Pantasm. I know a lot of people have said that Pattinson's Bruce Wayne wasn't developed properly but I really think that, for the first film, that was intentional. At the start of the film the Batman persona is all he has and he has yet to understand that he needs to be more than just vengeful Batman. That's his entire character arc in this movie and I believe him developing his Bruce Wayne persona will be crucial in the future or at least I hope.

    It's so interesting to see how damaged he is and how he didn't just valiantly bounce back and face his fears. I don't think the plot itself was amazing. I love that Batman can be so many different things to so many people. You can have the Adam West show, where it's campy, goofy, but so much fun, and it became the definitive Batman for the people of that generation. You have the Burton films that had a blend of slight camp mixed in with darker, more gothic tones. It shaped what the character could be to a new generation of people. Nolan came along and made it grounded in reality and forever changed how some viewed comic book movies. It won people over who didn't ever get into superheroes before. Then Affleck and the Snyderverse was the first time we saw him go toe to toe with Superman, aliens and world ending stakes on the big screen. It was the first cinematic Batman that was part of a larger comic book universe. Now this film, which is my favorite of the live-action films, and it felt like it was the one I'd personally been waiting to see for years (while still loving most of the prior adaptations). It's awesome that you can have so many different versions of the character, yet they all somehow feel true to him, and each one is someone's favorite.

      I agree, it really is awesome that all these Batman films throughout the decades all excelled and lacked in different aspects, each movie consisted of Batman, but despite that we all got different variations depending on each adaption. My personal favorite: are the 2 Keaton films, I loved the dark, gothic, and somewhat sinister atmosphere those movies held, and despite that, they still managed to incorporate some of the unrealistic, cartoony, and outlandish things from the comics. I always appreciate a film that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

      When he interrogates Penguin after the chase he realizes his mistake and correctly deduces: You Are El=URL and finds Riddler's website where he solves the riddle of the orphan and the orphanage.
      At the orphanage he realizes that he is the next victim, unfortunately too late at that moment Alfred is injured and hospitalized.

    What most people don’t understand is that he wasn’t Batman until the last 5 minutes of the movie. He was proto-Batman/Vengeance the whole movie.
    This entire film was him finally figuring out what Batman means.
    I thought that was the best thing the movie did. It’s subtle but really powerful story telling.

    Robert Pattinson is the best Batman because his Batman actually develops as a character in Batman movies it's always Bruce Wayne that gets the character development The Batman was the first to fully focus on Batman which is why it's the best I also like the fact that Rob's Batman is the most tortured it's very Shakespearean another good part about this film is that Batman has flaws he feels human he makes mistakes in my opinion The Batman is the best adaptation of Batman since Batman: The Animated Series and the Arkham Series it's so good and it's a shame Kevin Conroy never watched it I think he would've loved it

    I hope they make this Batman a franchise stretching over 20-30 years, releasing a movie every 4 years or so, with they story advancing at the same rate as real time.
    No need for a 24 situation where Jack Bauer was about 150 years old by the end, or what you normally see where a trilogy span 10 years in real time, but only cover a couple in story.

  • @josephgrace5955

    You bring up his heart and compassion and I feel that is what this movie needed more of. Not “cool” Bruce but just a Bruce with a little more heart.
    You brought up Alfred and that is the perfect example. While we fans say Batman is the true face and Bruce is the mask- Alfred would say he knows very little of Bruce but Batman is how a good man copes with loss in this situation. But he feels Bruce is bigger than the Bat as a person…
    So just having Bruce cold and indifferent to Alfred just hurt that small bit of likability Bruce needs to have. Bruce having a good heart and their relationship is the only reason Alfred goes along with the Batman stuff.
    The sequel needs to develop this a bit more.

    I already think he is the best Batman in all the ways we can define a good live action Batman. But I can understand people thinking he's not as good as Bale because he didn't really have to balance Batman and Bruce. However, we will most likely see him do that in the next fiilm and that was why this first film worked so well. Batman was fundamentally flawed because he only focused on the spirit of vengeance embodied by Batman. That not only seems like something an early Batman would do, but gives him an actual flaw to grow from. And we see that at the end when he realizes that he needs to inspire and help people just as much as he needs to instill fear at night.
    That's a very unique way to portray the character and I absolutely loved it.
    I like a Batman that has lessons to learn about himself like this

  • @codyssmith73
    @codyssmith73 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    He's great when he's allowed to be the Detective, trying his best to be terrifying to the Gotham citizens, and of course, at the end, when he truly understands what a "superhero" is. The problems come with him as Bruce. I can get him being anti-social and slightly awkward when around Alfred, cause he trust him and can let his guard down, but out in public? Much like as The Dark Knight, "Bruce" itself should be a mask when out and about, trying to be the playboy the media wants to make him out to be, hamming it up slightly... he should have natural charisma and charm. I get he hasn't built relationships with Gotham up just yet in this world, but it's a little too much "depression" for my tastes.
    And to clarify: I don't think seeming him depressed and alone is a bad thing. If anything, it showshow vulnerable he is, something The Lego Batman Movie also captured very well. But do you see how that doesn't work for his public persona? I get it, he didn't ask to be rich or for his parents to have been killed the way they were, but the fact his vulnerability was on display with the public just doesn't work for Bats IMO, even a young Bats.

  • @grenas1995
    @grenas1995 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Since day one I gave Pattinson a chance and the benefit of the doubt and I had Bale as my top Batman. I said, Let Pattinson have a chance. This isn’t fucking Twilight. I was right. He delivered across the board surpassing everything I loved about Bale. I loved Bale and still do he’s still up there along with Keaton, but Pattinson is my number 1. He nailed Batman to the teeth, because to him, Batman is the person, Bruce Wayne is the costume to the point where he don’t even know how to Bruce Wayne. That’s the character. A paralleled troubled soul like the Joker constantly fighting so others don’t go through what he did as a kid, all the while asking if he’s doing the right thing and making a true difference in the end. I still love Bale, but his Bruce Wayne felt a bit Tony Stark at times, more out there, and almost a bit cocky, which didn’t really speak Bruce Wayne, but Pattinson fixed that problem. Not to mention the fact that we’re still watching him develop into a more effective Batman.

    The issue I had with The Bat was the Library scene as a whole with the Selena will they won't they kiss scene was ruined cause he grapples her before the sound cue for the villain to appear which was his excuse for the "romantic" grab and he literally just got done stalking the woman after undressing. Also the Batcycle scene was bad cause it's a loud ass noise maker and he somehow sneaks it around in the middle of the night? Nah. Also the hostage scene at the end, the explosions where he enters the building imply he wasted about an hour setting up the bombs in a gimmicky way for spectacle which kinda makes the agency disappear.

    my only real problem with The Batman is I feel as if we have been down this road before with the Nolan films; realistic portrayal, sober, grounded feel, a youthful batman prone to mistakes... Granted this is only the first film, and if Reeves develops this character arc towards a Batman closer to the comics in a fantastical sense then im all for it... just once Id like to see a Detective Batman that crashed through a skylight, drops some smoke bombs; throws some batarangs into some goos gun hand and backflips another dude in the face all while Clayface is trying to steal some diamonds for god knows what reason lol... with a seamless looking catsuit that can close the cape all the way around himself!!

    My favourite part of this movie was when Alfred tells Bruce he's on the verge of bankrupting Wayne Enterprises. I don't think I've ever heard that in another Batman story, his finances are rarely mentioned. Mostly we're just supposed to believe that WE is an infinite well of money for Bruce to use however he pleases, so hearing that he's using so much money that he's in danger of running out was a really cool detail.

    8:24 Kevin Conroy 😢, Probably biased but I sort of agree, this was one of the best interpretations, those that say the batman wasn't good because it didn't have enough action are not looking beneath the surface. I don't think the definition of something is what has the biggest explosions and fist fights, overwise michel bay's films would be the best. This is possibly the best batman because it's art. This is the most artistically, emotionally driven the character has ever been done, I think that was reeves intention with this, he wanted you to be able to experience what it's like to be in his shoes, to be him. The goal was to make you feel an empathic link with the character. to that end it wildly succeeded, this film is deeply immersive, you do feel deeply connected to this bruce
