@@robweissman5952 First, if I told you about the "greatness I have done", you would never believe me. Second. The thing that makes me "entitled to make such a comment" are the many documentaries I have seen and the many books I have read about Kubrick. It is clear, Vitale was a glorified gopher. But I'll go one step further. In some of the discussions I have seen him participate in, I wonder how much he was even paying attention to what Kubrick was doing.

A wonderful tribute to a great filmmaker (and a great film: "Barry Lyndon" is my favorite Kubrick film) by those who were there. Also, how touching that Ryan aka Barry beat Leon aka Lord Bullingdon in the film and is very warm with him here. But Ryan also remained friends with Ali McGraw years after "Love Story" (A.R. Gurney's play "Love Letters" reunited them in 2015), remained friends with ex-wife Leigh Taylor-Young, and reconciled with partner Farrah Fawcett, so he knows how to stretch out relationships, for better or for worse. Thanks for posting!

@@rossl5908 Redmond Barry / Barry Lyndon was a heavily flawed person: greedy, selfish, and not particularly smart. But he had heart, and courage, and knew how to be honorable and fair. Paradoxically it was not his flaws, but his virtues, that led him to disaster. Which is a testament to the hypocritical times in which he lived. All in all, a memorable, vivid character that feels 100% real. And to see how there are so many out there that think Kubrick is 'cold' and calculative... The man knew how to flesh out characters like only the best filmmakers can. Hell he even made a computer into an iconic movie character. I can't think of anybody else that achieved that.

It's sad Ryan was such a horrible dad & boyfriend/husband b/c he wasn't a bad actor. He was blessed as a young guy w/ good looks they say he is very smart but he is a narcissist. Tatum said in her book that levels Ryan & a lot of celebs , that her Ryan's mom had groomed him to be a star. She worshipped Ryan beyond that of a regular loving mom. That's where the narcissism came from. Plus I've read so many stories how Ryan in the 60s & 70s would just have to look at a woman at a party & she'd dump her date or boyfriend to be w/ him. He stole Albert finney 's gf , Angelica Huston left Jack Nicholson to be w/ Ryan until Ryan beat her up she ran back to Jack & of course famously took Farrah faucett from husband Lee majors. It's too bad Farrah didn't just stay w/ Lee. Cause Ryan destroyed Farrah & their son. It's no coincidence that the 3 kids out of his 4 that he raised all had serious drug problems. I last read that when Redmond went on a shooting rampage his brain was so damaged from the drug abuse he wasn't fit to stand trial. U know how badly damaged u have to be to be declared legally insane ? Look at all the pychotic killers who do stand trial. They are obviously insane but legally insane is something else & is very very hard to prove. It's not like Redmond just went free if ur not fit for trial u go to a mental hospital & for a very long time of not forever. Movies & TV make it sound like if u prove ur insane u just go to some cushy hospital for a few months.

I watched Barry Lyndon when I was about 19 years old during Kubrick "fit" I was going through where I had to see it all. I was watching them in order, beginning with KIller's Kiss (obviously I wouldn't had seen Fear and Desire). It was pure picnic for many happy weeks! Then I got to Barry Lyndon and felt shut down. "What is this? This slow-paced, meandering character study..."
I watched Barry Lyndon in when I was 19 but I didn't SEE it until I was 50. I don't know how else to say that. It read perfectly for me at that age. As visceral and as visually compelling as Kubrick's films are, none (save perhaps 2001) are as sumptuous and as resonate as Barry Lyndon. In many ways, it is as "shocking" as Clockwork Orange, but in a different way. I suspect I might find it takes another 30 years to fully inculcate the full measure of its artistry.

He sure wasn't encouraging with Shelley Duvall. He belittled her and definitely raised his voice to her.

+Danimal300zx Because she was frustrating him. The most successful work method he found with actors was for them to not act, but instead "be." Only way to really have her "be" in terror for example, is to put her on edge emotionally. I guess she wasn't an actor who could go there on her own, but there's the wonderful paradox - her tedious, sulky over-dramatized performance is perfect within the context of the film. I'm sure that's why Kubrick was harsh. If she couldn't do it herself, Kubrick had to do it for her.

+Danimal300zx I think Kubrick was certainly misogynistic. It comes across so blatantly in his films.

+Greg Williams Not sure where you get that from. He adored his wife and daughters. Was surrounded by and inspired by women. Most of the subtext of "Eyes Wide Shut" is anti-misogyny.
Sue Lyon in "Lolita" manipulates and drags James Mason's Humbert Humbert around by leash, figuratively speaking.
Full Metal Jacket's entire climax is set around the Marines being practically castrated by a sniper who turns out to be a 15 year old girl.
