  • Celebrate Ryan O'Neal's career today with this very funny conversation about his early years on TV and his co-star from WILD ROVERS, William Holden. Ryan, who died at the age of 82, Dec 8, 2023, after a long battle with cancer, joined producer Rob Word at The Autry Museum for a special look back at his career.
Ryan talked with Rob about growing up in Hollywood, his screenwriting Father, Charles O'Neal (RETURN OF THE BAD MEN), their neighbor Henry Brandon (THE SEARCHERS), early stunt and acting work on Kirk Douglas’ International TV production of TALES OF THE VIKINGS, Mia Farrow’s self-inflicted G.I. JANE haircut during the run of their hit series PEYTON PLACE, Tuesday Weld and getting his screen acting card by working on THE MANY LOVES OF DOBIE GILLIS, reuniting with Ali McGraw his LOVE STORY co-star, and much more.
You won’t believe what William Holden did with his Best Actor Academy Award! Ryan O’Neal recalls his friendship with his Oscar-winning WILD ROVERS co-star and reveals what happened to Holden’s trophy.
Ryan was always exciting to be with. He had his demons but we connected as movie lovers. He was a real film buff and he kept me on my toes. I'm pretty good, too. But when I'd stump him or correct him, he'd punch me in my arm...hard. He was a boxer, too! Ouch. I loved his sense of humor and his contrary attitude. He made several films with Peter Bogdanovich (PAPER MOON, WHAT'S UP, DOC?) that have become classics, starred in Walter Hill's unfairly neglected existential noir, THE DRIVER, and what many believe to be his finest performance as BARRY LYNDON . Sure glad he joined us for this interview on Sept 20, 2016. Condolences to his family, friends and fans. R.I.P.

My family had the pleasure of hosting Ryan and his daughter at a location party back in the late 70s. A charming fellow. I ran into him years later and he remembered the event and was just as charming. A very deft comedian; his performance in "What's Up Doc" has always been under-appreciated.

Now she is 65 and keeps his pictures on the wall of a living room, nicely framed. She is so proud of them.

Thanks for posting again. An underrated screen presence. The critics of the’70s never seemed to get over the fact he was a TV star that audiences embraced as a movie star. “Paper Moon” is one of my cherished movie going experiences as a 12 year old kid. He is existentially fantastic in Walter Hill’s “The Driver” ; very funny, and able to be both goofy and masculine at the same time in “What’s Up Doc?”; and in my humble opinion stars in Kubrick’s greatest achievement “Barry Lyndon”, a film and performance that on first viewing 40 years ago gave me bored bewilderment but now I am stunned at its beauty, subtlety, and O’Neal’s full bodied performance, one of cinema’s true masterworks. And I much mention the great Richard Brooks’s final film, the unjustly despised “Fever Pitch”. Ryan is great in it. And in this day when sports gambling is an ubiquitous presence, this film deserves a revival as a wake up call.
Rest In Peace Ryan O’Neal. And thanks Rob for posting this tribute.

I may have posted this comment the first time this video aired. My daughter collects Breyer's horses, one of which is Gene Autry's horse Champion, complete with the pistols on his bit. Like Ryan O'Neal, my Dad talked about western stars coming to the local theaters across the country when he was a kid growing up in the 1930s and 40s. He remembered meeting Don "Red" Barry when he was playing Red Ryder. Now they are all gone. RIP, Ryan.

Rob, I got to know RYAN O'NEAL quite well as he guested on TV's BONES, as I was assigned to be his driver...
As those who met him know well, and all those that thanks to you Rob know very well, Ryan was a very big HOLLYWOOD film buff... we had many conversations on that topic. He was back on the 20th Century-Fox lot which he knew well from his PEYTON PLACE TV days, and BONES was shot on one of those old stages.
Driving back and forth from the studio to Ryan's home on PCH out by Malibu, I'd play a CD in the car that I put together, an audio compilation of music and dialogue from his movies and that always got his attention. Ryan had his health and family problems, but was always such a pleasure to be with, and one of the most easy going, down-to-earth movie stars I ever met!
R.I.P. Ryan... I may be wrong, but I think this was your biggest star interview Rob, very memorable and a fitting epitaph don't you think?

I’m really bummed out that 3/4 of Ryan’s children weren’t invited to pay their respects to their father. Griffin made the long trip in his car all the way from Texas. I think this was a Healing effort that was needed. I guess I am just really blown away how much Patrick continues to call this guy, a shrine of a hero, but his other children should have been allowed to attend. I respect Ryan as a legendary movie actor but his son Patrick is going over the top with idolizing him. As I get older, I can take a bit of his side and their side and come out with the real story in the middle. I really pray that Ryan’s 30 million estate is being handled fairly. Tatum is still in memory care facility from her stroke due to her overdose a few years ago. Then there’s Redmond he will need that money for his long term mental health care. Farrah was so worried about leaving her son behind.

Throughout his entire career, it's always been very interesting to me how he always fluffed right over his association to Barbra Streisand with whom he not only bedded, but did two movies with. I supposed it was an agreement between the two of them. In her book, she calls him a (a very fun) "fling" and says she was "too serious" for him. Interestingly, their romance was over by the time they started shooting What's Up Doc?

Wow, Ryan O'Neal was an amazing actor. No second rate star. Mr. Word seemed genuinely displeased by Ryan in this interview.

On the contrary, Bill. I had a blast. It was always edge of your seat fun with Ryan. He is missed already.

@@AWordonWesterns thanks for responding. I'm glad you enjoyed R.O. There at the end it seemed like you were pushing off stage but I guess you guys were just having fun. Real men like you and Ryan know you can joke around without offending. I'm not woke so it was nice to see old school banter. Love your show. How can I see a show live?

Whenever I see Ryan O'Neal, all I can think of is how he destroyed all his children.

Guy was a real abuser. Beat wife and kids and even gave his young kids drugs. No loss here
