I debated whether to add a comment to this but I feel I have to. Serge Valentin has done more than anyone in the internet age to inform us about great whisky and great spirit. Others attempt it but Serge is second to none. His use of language, and English is not his native tongue, is marvelous. Everyone should check out Whisky Fun. Respects to Ralfy of course.
i dont mean to be offtopic but does anyone know of a tool to get back into an Instagram account? I somehow lost my account password. I appreciate any tricks you can give me!
@Levi Anson thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and im trying it out now. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
So true what Serge says about tasting the same whiskeys but I never thought about it in terms of taste. The same applies to music. Nothing will help you appreciate classical music more than to listen to the same piece by 4-5 different conductors, orchestras or musicians. You pick up those subtle nuances and differences and it really informs sharpens your perspective.
Thanks for this amazing interview, which is still worth watching in 2019 and whenever in future. "Enjoy your malt moments and keep it fun." (c) Ralfy, (c) Serge
Great to see a Scottish man talking about whisky! I also like your reviews on American whisk(e)y .....healthy conversation, healthy perspectives. Go Ralfy
Islay - Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Ardbeg, Bruichladdich Speyside - Glendronach 15yo Revival Highland - Blair Athol, Highland Park, Clynelish that's the list but there was way more malts brought up later on
Excellent vlog as usual, Ralfy. I really enjoy watching your whisky musings, and do does lots of people who doesn't write to tell you so. Great to actually hear Serge's words and not "just" the written ones. These vlogs has done wonders for my understanding and appreciation of single malts (and blends!). My wallet is not as pleased though. ;)
Serge, This is a great parson I had the pleasure to meet at a whisky live with olivier and luc, two other maltmaniacs. He had us tasted a Great Clynlish 1953 specialy made for Italy. My memory is clear but this was not the case for my head. Very nice souvenir.
I like his advice a lot. It's not too expensive and it's a great exercise to get an official bottling and then one or two independent bottlings, probably different cask types, and to taste them side by side. You could even extend that into blends if you know that a blend has a lot of a particular whisky in it (e.g. Black Bottle, the OB ncf Bunnahabhain and then a single cask IB). Do that for an Islay, a Speyside, a HIghlander etc. and with 9 affordable bottles you've got a great start.
Very nice to see and hear Serge, I've been a malt enthousiast ever since my first Ardbeg 10, over a decade ago! Then I discovered Maltmadness and the Maniacs - the rest is history ;) Interviews with people like Johannes or Serge's friend and famous wine maker Olivier Humbrecht would be nice, if you ever meet them, grab them Ralphy!
I didn't know that Serge was from my country...funny! I thought he was from the US. Hope one day I'll be able to met him. When do you plan to do a review about Imperial single malt. I love this distillery generaly fresh and malty...perfect for summer time! ;-) Thank you for your videos. Adrien LACOMBE.
It's good to hear Serge recommend the Glen Lochy as I have recently purchased two independent bottlings from this now defunct distillery. A 21yo and a 30yo.
Wow, it is cool to see both of you in a video, I've lurked around both of your sites for a while now. I appreciate all the things I learn from both of you! Thanks for always keeping it fun. (If you're drinking Scotch and not having fun, you are wasting A LOT of time and money.) I think I might be having even more fun if I were I were sipping Scotch in front of a Speyside Castle. Fancy indeed. Jealousy ill becomes, but in High Def, I can actually see how much cleaner your air is than mine.
Given the inconsistent nature of whisky, is it always wise to calibrate your senses on a bottle of whisky which is familiar to you? The subtle changes in the contents of the spirit from bottle to bottle could throw you off rather than waking up on the wrong side of the bed.
This video makes me feel a lot better where he talks about sometimes not being in the right shape for nosing and tasting. In the past when i nose and taste sometimes its not the same experience as always and i fear that I'm either losing my senses or the whisky has gone bad.
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be only about culture. In Ontario, for example, Provincial Government has an incredible revenue from LCBO and Beerstores. (these are the only places that can sell alcoholic beverages in Ontario and are owned by the government [for those who want to know]) So I don't think we can see that anytime soon.
Oh, and by the way Coaljet - you're absolutely bang on about the ridiculous laws in our country. A winery can't even sell to customers in another province for God sake! How asinine is that?
Ralfy I just finished that bottle of Aucsentoshaw 10 year old, on the last glass I took my time I made it last 30 minets. The hole experance was much better still not as good Oban or Lagivulin but better. Keep up the good work thankyou. Lou
Not a cheap whiskies. From 50 to 120 pounds for a bottle outside Scotland. I thought, that he will say Black Bottle, Islay Mist and Dewar's 12)) Brora is unreachable at 100%
I just dropped $115 Cad for a bottle of Sheep Dip "Hebradean" and I've found a bottle of Brora 30 yo 56.4% single cask. 1 of 3000 bottles for $505 !! ( I think it's the last bottle ). I'm agonizing on whether to buy it or not. Help!!! I can't make up my mind....

. . . . I agree with everything you say here.

@Levi Anson It did the trick and I now got access to my account again. I'm so happy:D
Thanks so much you really help me out!
@Yael Jackson happy to help xD
This is the kind of video which warms the heart on a cold wintery day, like a descent dram. Thx Ralfy.
Fantastic! Just watching in 2020 during the quarantine in Brazil...Cheers Ralfy!
Two real gentlemen sharing the love of good whisky, brilliant entertaining and educational, congratulations to you both, thanks for posting this.

Found this gem of an interview today. Great stuff Ralfy !

Fantastic interview! One day, I hope to visit & experience Scotland & Scotch together!
That was wonderful. Thank you Ralf and Serge!

Serge is a legend. That's all that needs to be said really.
A 1972 Brora for 1600£ would fly off the shelves nowadays
Hi Ralfy! Love the channel! What can you say about single grain Scotch whiskys? They don't seem to be very well known and easy to acquire. Thanks!
5:31 Rather applicable in relation to review 870! Wisdom echoes through the years some might say :-)

just came to this after the mention in ralfy review 927 extras. laughed out loud at the 'Malty' nose description delivery. perfection.

Could you list his recommendations in the description Ralfy? My hearing isn't all that! :)
Excellent video! Nice to see you two together.
watching this has made sooo jealous! I just want to sip a dram under the spring sun at that castle!!!
Great video as always, Ralfy. Informative and entertaining as usual!
Is that Drummuir Castle you're at there, Ralfy? Top work as always, keep up the good work!
I'm loving the panic button on your site, Serge!
Another great video.

Un grand merci à Serge et à Ralfy! Continuez comme ça, s'ils vous plait!
tonight I tried Ardbeg 10y with my brother. i enjoyed so much the nose and the taste. i'm happy to see you both cheers
Where is serge from?
Hehe, the house was shaking from the wind noises ! Luckely after I turned out the bass volume, It was gone :)
Lovely sight by the way
Great interview Ralfy!
Just Outstanding!
Ralfy please review some Australian whiskies. thx
medium range whiskies: Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Ardbeg.Bruichladdich 10y, Glendronach 15 y Revival, Highland park, Clynelish.
£1600 for a 1972 Brora - a bargain now.
I love that Serge also loves the Laddie 10.
This video makes me feel a lot better where he talks about sometimes not being in the right shape for nosing and tasting. In the past when i nose and taste sometimes its not the same experience as always and i fear that I'm either losing my senses or the whisky has gone bad.
Really? It looks nearly identical to the front entrance! I suppose a lot of these Highalnd castles will have been built to similar designs...
Brora '72 @ £1600? What a bargain! Should've snapped up half a dozen, Serge!
I'd go back a bit and plump for Johannes van den Heuvel, Serge's co-conspirator and author of maltmaniacs.com

Sweet thank you
The only minor issue with his suggestions (regardless of being old) is that neither whisky is under seventy pounds.
These guys together are cooler than Pacino and De Niro
like it was back in the old days, ralfy switching the camera off without a remote :D

All you need is Ralfy! nuff said
Funniest moment of the interview. LOL! 13:30
I just hope whiskys were cheaper in Canada so that I wouldn't have to pay $100 for Ardbeg 10y!
Hilarious ending :D
I wonder what Serge was drinking
Ralfy and his remotes.
ive just realised Serge sounds like a french viv richards
4 years later and the site is still working!
