      @@joebryant8500 That is not my experience. The maple necks and ash or alder bodies on the guitars I have seen are of good quality well seasoned wood. The most obviously economy items have been the pickups which have been as simply constructed as possible. Even then the pickups sounded OK.

    Last year I picked up a used 15 year old Pacifica 112 for $69 Canadian. Neck feels real good. Sounds decent enough for practice and taking out to a jam night. I have a Line 6 Variax. Yamaha owns Line 6. The two guitars feel pretty close in my hands.

    Looks like Henning is playing a 112J which has ceramic pickups not not the 112V which he's linked in the description. The 112V has Alnico V pickups and a splitable humbucker. You can tell because the guitars have different pick guards and the 112V has metal nobs while the 112J's are plastic. Generally the 112V costs around $30-50 more than the 112J and I think it sounds a bit nicer.

    They wrap up the strings to stop the strings from damaging the frets when being shipped. The strings can hit the frets and put dents in them. My daughter knocked my custom shop strat off the stand off the stand in my guitar room and it fell on my pedalboard. The A string put a deep dent in the 3rd fret. Luckily I was able to do a complete level and crown to get rid of it instead of having to replace the frets. But thinking back I should have just replaced the one fret. Oh well 🤷‍♂️

    To back up some other commenter's remarks and your rant video about big names, this video proves that "If you can live without the Fender logo on the headstock, then your guitar is a Yamaha". I got my first ever electric guitar in 1993 - a Black Pacifica 112JL (L for left handed) for £219. I was sold on the guitar because friends in the music retail business were amazed at the quality, convinced that Yamaha were selling them as a loss leader because the guitar should have cost £300 to £350. The 112 is not only a great entry level guitar for beginners, but is a solid foundation for customising and upgrading, as I've done over a dozen Pacifica transformations for myself and others. The 112 you demo here uses Ceramic magnets in the pickups, whereas the more recent 112V uses Alnico 5 hence the "V" and other improved features, but does cost more for these features. The 112 is my go to guitar. Sadly the 112 is the only left handed Pacifica that Yamaha now make. To get other pickup configurations I have to customise the 112, and to date I've designed my own scratch plates and pickup configurations like S-S-F (Single coil bridge and middle but a Firebird Mini Humbucker in the neck), H-H, and H-MH (Gibson Style Mini humbucker). I've built Pacifica 112's for others with 2 Firebird pickups, another using Humbucker sized P90s, another with H-S configuration. Guitars Electric in the UK supply Yamaha Pacifica scratch plates in various finishes for the Pacifica 012/112/412 in H-S-S, S-S-S and H-H configurations as well as scratch plates for the newer 112V. They only do the H-S-S configuration for Left Handed Pacifica 112 scratch plates. For custom scratch plates I can recommend Sims Guitars and Axiom Guitar. Nice to play, thanks to the balanced design and flat profile fretboard, all thanks to Rich Lasner of Ibanez fame. imho the entry level guitars leaders are Yamaha Pacifica and Harley Benton.

    Hey Henning. The neck scale length is long scale like a Fender. The neck radius relates to the curve of the neck when looking at the finger board looking through the axis of the neck. It sweeps an arc. If you kept drawing the natural progression of said arc on this neck it would belong to a circle with a radius of 350 mm. I like 12 radius necks. 9.5 inch radius is common for Fender guitars. And yes I switch my system of measurement back and fourth....just because. 25.4 mm = 1inch. 40 thou = 1mm....😝🤣🙃🤓👍🎸✌️😎

    I can think of a nice visual mod that would make this guitar look so much nicer, stain the head stock to match the body.

  • @mikkosutube
    @mikkosutube 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    great videos..You just did a review of my bosses (Michael Spalt) guitars at the NAMM..one comment though..the scale length affects the stiffness or floppyness of the strings DEPENDING UPON THE TUNING AND THE GUAGE OF THE STRINGS: If you have an action that is high enough, but the strings are too loose to play with a slide for example..then you can tune the guitar higher and change to thicker strings..the same string guages in the same tuning feel looser on a gibson than on a fender because there is about an inch difference (about 25mm) difference in the scale length.

  • @j_freed
    @j_freed 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    7:05 a cheap way to stagger tuners is to place a hardwood wedge shim between the headstock and these standard tuners.
    Dan Erlewine showed how to do this so that you maybe don't need a string tree on a Strat. What a concept.

    I own an early 90s Pacifica 312 - its the guitar i learnt to play on throughout school and later on bigger projects before i eventually put it down and bought a PRS Santana SE. I am looking at giving it a face lift at some stage but I will NEVER get rid of it. Because good quality electric guitars from yamaha are hard to get in my part of the world. And this is a strange phenomena because i see their electric guitar starter packs with pacifica 112's EVERYWHERE and i want something a little more high tier than a basic 112. So its not a distribution issue. they have no problem getting their basses, pianos, keyboards, acoustics/electro acoustics, drum kits and electric drum kits to retailers here. They just choose not to ship any of their electric guitars out and that is really perplexing to me

    • @jamescreswell9037
      @jamescreswell9037 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. The 311H humbucker (made by G&B Korea) is only around 8k. Split it's 4k. Underwhelming. It's tone is excellent, but it just lacks oomph when you want to *ROCK* . As is, the bucker is fine for jazz and blues and the G&B neck P90 is superb. IMO putting the low output humbucker in the 311 was a deliberate decision by Yamaha to performance segment it further from the price point of its 611H sibling otherwise you'd just buy the 311H and save a packet. They really should have put a hotter bridge 'bucker in the 311H. The 611H has the TB-14 Custom 5 which is 14k, a much better match for the P90 and it really ROCKS when you want to go split bridge OR rock the bucker. I have the 311H modded with a Custom 5 TB-14 in the bridge. Turns it into the guitar it should have been.

    The 311H is absolute top value for anyone who wants a great guitar to learn on or perform with or just mess about on. P90 is lovely idea and humbucker has an old school sort of vibe - some kick but not too much. Agree that absence of trem is a good thing on a number of counts. I have an Ibanez SA and any use of the trem puts it right out of tune. I wont ever buy a guitar again with a trem. The 311's hardware is really excellent. If you're not sure, find out just how much a set of locking tuners and high end string trees are to buy as stand alone items. Almost as much as this guitar costs to buy! Plus, as the man said, it is a NAME instrument which is desirable for most of us. Who wants a Squire for God's sake?! Anyway, I will be getting myself a 311H at some point soon I hope! Those donkeys at the end of the video are magic by the way! Cheers. PT.

      Oh, come on! "I won't ever buy a guitar with a trem again" - same level of misunderstanding as if you'd have said "Once I burned my tongue with hot coffee, I won't ever drink coffee again". You simply have a bad Ibanez SA that's it, it's not about the vibrato thing. What SA version do you have? Maybe it has some crap like "synthetic bone" nut?
      Look, it is VEEERY easy to have a stable vibrato on a guitar.
      First thing is a slippery nut. TUSQ nuts are really good.
      Second-loking tuners. Pretty much everybody now makes them. I would go with Schaller or GraphTech Ratio, but they are pricy. The Japanese Gotoh is good. It's a really high quality product, but for a decent price.
      Third. Good set up and new strings. Take your guitar to a good technician, let him/her do the job.
      Only here after all these small improvements you can swap the trem. However there is a catch with Ibanezes: their trems usually have their proprietary dimensions. Be aware.
      The trems themselves, oh dear, huge choice! Schaller, Wilkinson, Wudtone, VegaTrem, Sophia... You name it!
      Years ago I upgraded my teenage times Squier. Gotoh locking tuners, Fender LSR Roller Nut, SuperVee BladeRunner tremolo. It stays in tune for five to seven days if I don't play it, or it holds tune for about 6-8 hours if I play it non stop making dive bombs on the trem all the time. It went out of tune in 20 minutes before that upgrade. Thus it works.
      One of my friends has a Harley Benton Fusion. Look online the prices for those guitars:)
      Noname locking tuners, fairly simple Wilkinson tremolo, GraphTech TUSQ nut. The dude's guitar holds tune for 3 to 10 days depending on playing and how old/new are the strings.

      In this price range you're right, you want to avoid trem systems for the most part imo. But if you're willing to spend the money and have it to spend- they make guitars with trem systems that have very stable tuning.

    You have to be careful about pushing push on knobs down.
    CTS pots are regarded as the industry standard good quality control pot. But they are often made with no mechanical stop on the upper shaft, the only thing holding the pot together is the four folding tabs on the steel shell. A couple of years ago CTS started making the shell of a thinner material so the tabs are not as strong as they were. If you push down firmly on a push on knob to seat it on a splined shaft CTS pot you can push the pot shaft down hard enough to push the shell off the back of the pot and the whole thing falls apart. CTS have told me that they can make pots with a mechanical stop - a shoulder or circlip that rests on the threaded collar - but much of the time they don't (they manufacture to order against a chosen specification). Their advice is that the steel shell of pots, without a mechanical limit on the shaft, should be supported against a solid surface when push on knobs are fitted.
    As far as I know most of the far eastern manufactured pots do have mechanical limits on the shaft.

I’ve been playing for 22 years and still regularly gig with an Epiphone Junior and Squier Bullet; both of them stock. My most expensive guitar, a Paul Reed Smith S2 Standard Satin and is $1000. And that’s considered beginner price by lots of guitarists out there. An advanced guitarist can gig with a guitar less than $400 with no problem.
