AlistairT509 - I hear you! I used to live in the East Midlands and watched the camera /speed limit restrictions slowly strangle the joy out of a weekend blat. Over here in central Italy most of the fun mountain roads have a 50kmh limit!! The difference is, nobody pays a blind bit of notice to the limit! I once came up behing a pair of bikes passing the cars on a windy road, at the head was a police car. We were already going at maybe 70kmh when a straight came up and the police car moved over to let us all pass 😂

Got to agree here, I lived in Emilia-Romagna South of Bologna for a couple of years and the cops there just didn't seem to care, if you're over the limit having a bit of a blast, I didn't get to do a lot of riding but the Futa Pass (SS65) starting at Santo Stefano South Bologna going South to Firenze was a good ride, twisty and very scenic, or indeed going North from Firenze to Bologna.

I am very jealous as I am keen on most things Italian - not just the carefree attitude to speed limits. My daughter is named Florence (Firenze might have been a bit much) and the bike I mentioned with the ruined tyre was a Desert X (an irrational purchase I couldn’t afford because it was Italian and pretty). I have ridden a little in the Italian Alps, the Stelvio etc. but did feel I was holding the locals up!

In 2003 i did the Ducati created Centopassi Challenge, based around the Alpine passes in France and Italy. There’s were two groups, one was for people who entered the competition, the other group was a guided ride behind some Italian police riders. I chose the competition group. At dinner on the first day the riders in the police group had actually been going round faster - the police were scraping their pegs and exhausts round the corners! They had a great time (as the competition did of course)

Here in the Rocky Mountains, summer daylight starts at 4am but it's also a peak time for deer, elk, and other animals to be out on the roads, and therefore quite dangerous. I leave at just before dawn on motorcycle road trips but I don't like it. I've known a few riders who lost their lives hitting moose and javelina during pre-dawn hours.

In Finland the highways have Elk fences 3m high because a car or truck is unlikely to win in that collision. The migrating Elk have tunnels to enable them to go under the highway.
Of course for bikes the highway is dull and barely has a corner.
The smaller roads between towns are usually straight with no fences so best to pay attention!
Country roads are often grit so best bring a rally vehicle for that...
On a more positive note Finland has six circuits to enjoy.
Search Top Gear Hakinen to get a better look..

The trend seems to be replace great4 cylinder sport bikes with lesser two cylinder bikes that have a bigger number after them. R6>R7, GSX-R750 > GSX-8R (the R has no place, i.e. shouldn't be, in the replacement name)

So many things to comment about in this video. There are parts of Northern England which are still quite quiet. But, you have to work hard to find them. You are so right about riding on the continent. Parts of France are just empty of people, traffic, everything on a Sunday and during French holidays. It is a biker's wet dream. Keep off the trunk roads (A, RN and N roads) and stay on the back roads the smaller D roads and C roads. There are, usually, no walls or hedges so you can see for miles and the condition of the roads isn't too bad (better than the UK). Pop over on the Chunnel/ferry and, within, 10 miles (16 km) you're on the back roads. Don't use Google Maps or Waze, get a dedicated GPS for this type of riding.

Hi Michael. Awesome channel ! Thank you for mentioning airbags. And that you use them. I now wear one on the road religiously after being caught out by a car turning across my path in 2019. I survived 2 weeks in ICU but an airbag would have made a massive difference in reducing the injuries. I wish more riders wore them on the road…

Very informative series, thank you Neevesy! Appreciate your passion for the Tuono V4 (as I do) and previous passion for superbikes (which I still have), lol! Not sure if this has ever been asked, I do like racing helmets so much and could spend a fortune on them. Arai is my favorite, but I got several more from other brands with very unique racing liveries. Since you gave a review on your Shoei in a recent issue of MCN, let me ask you, why did you change from Arai? Always thought you are the best ambassador for that brand until I realized you are not wearing them any more. Anyway, what's your take on the top league of racing helmets? Very interested in your experience! Thank you!

I recently got an old yamaha fz250 that Im restoring, one of the small bore fours of the olden days. Ever since Ive been fascinated with smaller but complex engines, and with the new rumours of a possible kawasaki z400rs, I have been constantly thinking about modern nakeds using small bore four engines. Do you think such a platform would be a captivating one? To my entirely subjective opinion I cant imagine anything more cool for a younger rider than a high revving 250 that sounds like a proper sports bike but is still comfortable.

Hi Neevsy, love your channel and watch every video. I was speaking to an Alpinestars dealer who is a Japanese gentleman. He made an interesting comment about helmet brands. He said that in Japan, people view Arai as superior to Shoei due to the quality of materials used. He said that compared to Arai, Shoei inner pads start falling apart after several washes. He went on to say that Shoei was only more popular in Western countries and he could not understand it. I wear a Shoei GT Air 2 myself so I found it interesting. I’ve never owned an Arai due to the cost where I live, but would love to hear your thoughts. Honestly I like my old HJC more as it has a better view window, and the parts come on/off easier for cleaning. Thanks

I am new to motorbikes - 3 years in and owned 3 bikes: XSR125, Trident 660 (that I passed onto my wife when she passed) and now and Z900RS SE. I have heard you comment on "boring" engines like the the Z900s in-line 4. I am curious because I think it sounds great and delivers nice linear power whilst the 660 sometimes sounds like a bag of spanners. Is the boredom with in-line 4s because they have been around for so long and the more experienced riders are over familiar with them and need something new or is it me?
Cheeky second question - 3 years in and still developing skills, would you recommend more on road training or something else?
Love the channel - you inspired us to give motorbikes a go!

I'm not Neevsey, but I can attest to the fact that ALL forms of motorcycle training is super fun and beneficial. I've done on road training with Rapid (super beneficial for how you ride on the road and good training for making the most of it - but it's not cheap), and their track for road training too, I have done off road training and LOVED that, I have also done various track academy training too, and all of them teach you something. For me track and off road riding taught me the most, about interaction with the bike, the way it feels when unstable and how to build confidence through those moments etc. But of course everyone is different, but whichever you choose first, you are guaranteed a good time. Ride safe!

Greetings Michael - enjoy your TH-cam channel and MCN reviews from California. I have a question regarding the Suzuki GSX-S1000. I don’t know if it is available in the UK anymore, but since its refresh in 21, I don’t see it much in comparison videos. With 150 hp and retuned for torque on the road, it falls short of supernaked status (although it’s not far off from the MT-10). Do you have any thoughts on this bike, where it fits, and who it is for?

Will add to this in hope Neevesy share some light...just switched from 2022 GSX S1000 to 2023 KTM SDGT...plan to do some touring and got a great deal...no regrets...one interesting difference...out of many, of course. That K5 derived engine was absolutely unchoakable...would ride in 6th at 30mph through twisties, one handed...just an occasional practice for me on remote Missouri roads, I am an average rider at best...the GSX would just pull smoothly and fairly rapid with utter smoothness and composure. 1290 SDGT with all the torque, will chug and shake and bog in 4th even 3rd at same speeds. I get it...lumpy, big twin with long gears for touring, but was surprised by lack of flexibility comparing to GSX...to be fair, SDGT is plenty flexible and you just ride it differently, of course, but interesting nevertheless. Another "missing" feature on KTM was...ugh, not sure the technical term, but both GSX and my ex 2022 GS1250 had a no throttle feature where bike moves on its own without any throttle input at low speeds ( no hands...which is super useful for using garage remotes and such)...KTM just chokes and would stall. Never tried GSX GT...perhaps that would have been the "goldilocks" for me...oh, well...there is always the next year. And yes, GSX S1000 is brilliant in its simplicity...thebonly nag I had was lack of Cruise Control and better suspension...all other minor "faults" are totally liveable with. Godspeed, and thank you!

Really Appreciate the Answer and the Historical context was great! hadn't really considered how previous rules had basically not affected road bikes.
Personally i am excited to see a change in the rules regarding aero and ride height more then the capacity change, which seems like it's more about the limitations of the Tires Michelin are producing.
I am one of the few left who really loves 1000cc superbikes and use them both for Road and Track. So i don't wanna see WSBK change, it's honestly such exciting racing right now (better than MotoGP i would argue).
However with all that said, they way Euro Emissions regs are going and the shrinking of the market for superbikes being what it is i would hope we see development of a new category rather than superbikes becoming just a small number of homologation or track only special editions that very few people can afford.

I go from my place to Barnard Castle, out of there towards Middleton in Teesdale, through there past High Force and over the tops to Alston. From there, Hartside Pass, then Penrith roundabout, over to Shap, Kendal, Devil's Bridge, Hawes, Leyburn, Richmond then a blast along the A66 to Barney, take the road back to my place from there. I sleep well after that! Not a camera or copper most days, even weekends although you do need to watch out for when they do speed campaigns. Hi, I have a question about weight.
It's seams like small bikes are getting heavier which is a shame.
I've heard you saying in the launch of the 457, that there is a requirement that small bikes will be at least 175 kg. Can you please explain more about it?
    For example
The 1st gen duke 200 was 127.5 kg, the 390 was 139 kg and the 690 was 149 kg.
But in the last decade they have gained a lot of weight, the 390 is around 160 kg, the husqvarna svartpilen 701, is 175 kg.
I've thought that they have lost their mind, all of their appeal coms from the lightweight character.
But if it's the law, what is the reason 🤔?.
I love small bikes, like the grom. And dukes.
    Thanks.
    Abraham.

I have in the last few years found the world of supermoto style bikes (ktm690/husky 701) after riding sportsbikes, nakeds, offroad and trials and all i can say is wow!
Spending some time adjusting to the different riding style what i can say is its like having a sportbike but one that works and is at its best sub 100mph, for the twisty bumpy welsh roads where i live i honestly don't think there is a better bike. The more you push them the better they start to work and to me it gives you all the thrills and feeling of being able to push the bike but at a slower speed than a sportsbike.
I would love to hear your opinion on them and your experience as i can only see the market growing given the state of the roads and heavy policing of speed everywhere now days.
And with the latest ones being useable for more distance and longer service intervals i am yet to find a downside other than a numb ass which a pair of padder cycle shorts has helped with 😂.
Love the videos and all the best for the future.

can cofirm, early morning rides are amazing. I tried it after watching why we ride as someone there mentioned riding with sunrise. It is a bit problematic to wake up at 4-5am but worth it as the roads are empty, during summer weather is good and not too hot. Ideally you plan your route so that you can end up in a cafe for breakfast and get home/to work still before the worst part of morning rush hour.

Regarding roads for superbikes, yes 4am starts (I’m in Australia so have to really pay attention to wildlife), week days, never lap any section, just hit the twisties hard and push on, do the same loop or same few loops everytime so u know all the nuances, pot holes, crests, dips, blind driveways, areas where cars or tourists bring gravel onto the road from pull off areas, areas that take longer to dry out after rain etc and understand and be able to accept when a loop has had its day due to residential growth and keep seeking out new loops that are quiet. It’s all a risk on the road no matter how wise u r but oh so rewarding too when u get it right. Also I like a loop I can do in a tank of fuel. No need for any stops and u wanted attention and u r home and off the roads before anyone is on the roads, and u can better tyres and not churn through them as quickly. Lost of twisties and not many long straights which cause Unwanted tyre wear. A loop long enough to get your rubber up to temp and eye in but no so long that focus starts to waiver.

Did you purchase your inexpensive air bag off an eBay vendor? Many of them are marine life vests that are required to operate in an entirely different way to an airbag providing protection from impact, and are being sold with heavily Photoshopped ‘certificates’ from an organisation called Shenzhen CTT that has no authority to pronounce the acceptability of safety products under European legislation. I managed to convince eBay to remove ~80 of these products from its listings, but within 24 hours the vendors had set up new accounts and were selling again.
Bennetts Bike Social ran an article on the scam, which you can find by searching “Bennetts More dangerous motorcycle airbags uncovered.”

    I had one MV from "garbage" era and rode another one. 2015 & 2013, B3 & F3.
Best throttle response out of all bikes I tried. Crisp, precise. Smoothest ride I ever had on a bike.
I don't know if there was some issue with bikes that were on tests, but surely the difference couldn't be that big in reality.
To put into perspective - after this MV I couldn't bring myself to enjoy garbage euro5 bikes. Response is non-existed, engine is choking out until you 30% of a throttle, it's absolute rubbish. Yet I never heard anyone bring that up. Issue existed with Ducati, Triumph, MV euro5 bikes that I tried.

Always enjoy your thanks for asking videos and thanks for sharing some of your knowledge. I have a question relating to the new Aprilia RS457 you recently tested. That bike has near identical BHP and top speed to my TZR250 2MA from the 1980s. I commented saying the Aprilia would be way faster especially on the road but others said there's no way these new parallel twins would be as fast as old 2 stroke 250s. I recently sold a 390 duke which on road was way faster than my TZR so I'm sure these sports twins would be too . Don't get me wrong I love my TZR as I had one when I passed my test in 1990 and back then I thought it was a rocketship. What are your thoughts on this and do you think MCN would do a road and track back to back test on some old 250 Strokes and new A2 4 stroke sports bikes to settle this?

A Helmet Question: I don’t do track days so I can only speak to road riding. Having chased the ultimate light weight helmet into the realm of carbon fiber I find them great on a day with little or no cross winds, but my head tends to get pushed around more on windy days than with a fiberglass/composite helmet that weighs more, leading to more neck fatigue. Am I alone in this situation ? Or have you experienced this as well ? Thanks for the great Q&A videos.

  • @riderramblings
    @riderramblings 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

The helmet question. Which is best? And, of course, the answer is... It depends!
Currently, I have a Schuberth C3 Pro and the Shoei NEOTECH II. The Schuberth is so much quieter than the Shoei (I mean really, really much quieter not just a little bit). Comfort is about the same except the neck strap on the Schuberth is more comfortable and the visor is easier to open, take off and clean. Oh, and fewer bugs make it through the top vent of the Schuberth...
Arai is one of the few makes of helmet I haven't tried. So, can't comment but, of those that fit me and are comfortable to wear for long periods, the Schuberth has proven to be, by quite a large margin, the best to date.
What are the pros and cons of the Arais you have? Why do you like them?

Another enjoyable video, thank you. Comment and question if I may. Back in the 90s in my R1 powered 30s I found my favourite roads to ride up here in Scotland were just crazy busy with tourists, caravans and coaches. So, started going out at 6am and doing a loop North of Glasgow up to Oban, or Glen Coe etc and seeing bugger all traffic, cops or other bikes. Heaven. Bar the odd wandering sheep to keep you alert! 3 hours or so and back home for breakfast before the roads got busy.
Question: you have talked in riding technique videos about doing the turn in phase on a closed throttle which I find works very well now my front forks aren't too soft and ruining the geometry under the strain of my weight. Problem I have is that at normal sensible(ish) road speeds by the time I reach the turn in point on my shut throttle the engine breaking is slowing me so much I have to start accelarating again at an awkward moment. I make it work by modulating the throttle as I approach turn in so I am doing that part on a neutral throttle and start applying the gas as the bend opens. Short of approaching bends at a higher rate of speed that would often be inappropriate for the road conditions I am struggling to get it quite right. Works fine for me when I can see through the bend but that is not often the case, ie. I can take the bend faster than the road conditions allow so I cannot be at the optimum speed to utilise this technique. A long waffle that I'm not sure conveys my meaning but any thoughts...?
