    I turned up one early 1970s Sunday to visit the Norfolk Gliding Club at Tibenham as a young, new glider pilot and was amazed to see the K13 land and James Stewart step out of the front seat after a ride with the CFI. I was told that Stewart was in London playing Harvey the White Rabbit and the only invitation he accepted was an unofficial visit to Tibenham where he was based during the war. He stayed for a while visiting the old buildings during a tour of the airfield, had a bite to eat in the clubhouse and headed back to London late afternoon.
    He was a real gentleman spending time to talk to everybody and kindly agreed to become honorary life president of the club with whom he kept in touch with on a regular basis for many years afterwards.

    Always amazes me how densely packed the airspace must've been back in wartime, even Snetterton was a bomber base in WW2. No wonder there were so many collisions and close calls. Great video! Regards Jimmy Stewart, he was sometimes allowed to fly on ops and sometimes not. It was great PR to have him on ops, but there were worries about him being killed or captured that would sometimes mean he was ordered to stay on the ground.

    Surprised you didn't mention the well known British actor Martin Shaw (Doyle in The Professionals) who used to fly his Stearman from EGSV and could often be seen at the annual air show.

    Love the electric aircraft options there and the nuncat, brilliant to see! They are a forward thinking airfield.

      Old Buck host the Old Buckenham Airshow which is home to some electric aircraft. This year they had 2 twin electric aircraft flying

    I hope the runway was a bit longer than 790 metres for the bombers!
    I've flown into EGSV a couple of times and loved it. Watch out for the parachute drops though!

    Such a coincidence: I flew to ESGV today, and Jon posts a video of EGSV on the same day. 😊

    Flew in there years ago in a PA28 from Southend having flown up the coast to Sizewell then inland. My pilot friend wanted to take me to France for lunch, but I had no passport. Odd, since I now live in the USA. The cafe looks just as I remember it, but my clearest recollection was having to abort our takeoff, because the door came unlatched half way down the runway.

    Great review on old buck, I fly from shipdham airfield which is north of old buck. But for us the future is very bleak as the farmer wants to end flying from there because he wants to put solar panels on the runway. So much history is going to be lost and myself and the other pilots are devastated. Another ww2 airbase lost forever

      Oh no! I learned to fly at Shipdham in 1993.

    Charming airfield - fascinating history too.
    Interesting to see N3381E a Cessna 175 Skylark there, I think it's been stabled at Kemble too in recent times 🤔
    Is the airfield disability friendly too🤔

    After watching this video Jon, I've always asked myself - does your PA28 have autopilot and is it simply basic autopilot or does it have the usual NAV and HDG features and so on? All the best - Nathanael

    Love these aerodrome reviews, and I have a question: is Old Buckenham disability friendly?

    Pa28 forever! I am not convinced by electric planes. It s seems to be useful for 2 or 3 touch and go before to be in flat battery. Best wishes Brieuc

    Could you please explain the term PPR to a US pilot and why do you need to get prior permission to fly into an airport?

  • @rogerbarr2671
    @rogerbarr2671 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’m a private pilot in Australia and only use the last three letters of the planes call sign in all communications with ATC. John always uses the full five letters of his call sign in his initial calls to ATC or local aero services. Is this a UK requirement on initial contact with ATC?

    • @72ndEchoes
      @72ndEchoes ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Per EASA (and I guess UK CAA) standards, you use all five letters on initial contact, then any ATS can shorten it to the first letter, followed by the last two letters. (Hence, G-BMIV => GIV).

    Interesting little airfield with a lot of innovation coupled with a long history. Shame the menus are always the same on these reviews 😂

      Us Brits all love chips, burgers and bacon baps, so why change a menu that most people like.

    Only the second video of yours that I have watched, but it will be the last. I noticed that you are a virtual signaller for Pride in aviation, well I am all inclusive and support Hetro people too. In fact I don't really understand why you need to bring sexuality into a video about PPL flying.
