I live in Houston, TX and distinctly remember a few Halloweens where the sky was turning this particular color at sunset. Then, you'd look down the street and you might see some parents walking with younger costumed kids trick or treating early so they could get them to bed sooner. It was always an ominous reminder that Halloween was about to kick off.
I love this scene. It's one of the most clever ones in the whole movie. It's well established what these masks are capable of and what they're planned to do, then it cuts to shots of kids from many different states, blissfully unaware of what the masks they have are planned to do to them, while the deceptive music plays to montages of their fun. Horrifying stuff. It really gets the point across that the whole country will be fucked if their plan succeeds.
Doesn't necessarily have to be about income. I thought about if I would have been in this scenario and I can only think of three years where I wore a mask; one year when I was in kindergarten and wore a cheap plastic visor because I wanted to be The Lone Ranger so that wouldn't have been a threat, then the ninja hood my mother made for me when I was 10 years old, and finally my first true latex mask of a skeleton executioner I bought when I was around 16 or 17. I just always felt that make-up was more "realistic" than masks and that masks were a cop-out. I think I also may have been a tad claustrophobic in my earlier years and I may have found full latex masks restrictive and hard to breathe in.
