I’m Australian and I went to this final. I was SO proud to see Dami do so well! And we all got a light up bracelet so that’s what you’re seeing in the crowd.
I usually don’t like watching americans react to eurovision, but your videos are so fun! Because you understand it! You don’t laugh at the crazy performances in a ”what are these weird europeans doing” way, you laugh with it. You can appreciate both sides of the competition and recognise good songs! Sending all my best wishes from Sweden❤
Australia ATE with this!! Dami Im also won X Factor here in Australia. Her Catalogue is great and LIVE performances are even BETTER 👑✨ a true Aussie Queen. 🇦🇺
2016 was an AMAZING year and it's such a shame for Dami that she had to compete with Ukraine and Jamala's 1944 and one of the most emotionally charged performances of all time. That last chorus is EVERYTHING, please please check it out, you'll understand how Australia lost out once you see it 😅
First Suggestion : Week Rock at Eurovision 5# Let 3 - Mama SC (Croatia) 4# Eugent Bushpepa - Mall (Albania) 3# Hatari - Hatrid mun Sigra (Iceland) 2# Voyager - Promise (Australia) 1# Blind Channel - Dark Side
My absolute favorite entry from Australia Ukraine won that year with Jamala and her song 1944 but Dami is still a fav and her song is a classic from Eurovision their only entry who got in the top2 and she was a juries' favorite she got the highest point from the juries she didn't win but she was my winner 2016 was the year when no one could predict the outcome at the finals it was tight between Ukraine and Australia
DAMI IM!!!!!! YESSSSSSS!!!!!!! I love Jamala too, of course, but damn was this one of the best performances ever or what. I hope she returns some day for the contest. She's amazing amazing amazing!!!
Dami Im and "Sound of Silence" got my vote, and 12 p from both the televote, and the jury vote from my country in 2016, total 24 p. Same from Albania they also gave 24p. Quite high scores from Denmark, Iceland, Norway too. Unfortunately Australia got low scores from countries like Czechia, San Marino, Armenia, France, Ireland, Montenegro and Russia.
The graphics in the second verse are actually projected onto a fine mesh scrim. That's why they're faint. And that's why on some camerashots she looks a bit softer and more glowy, because it's being filmed through that scrim. You can see them removing the scrim during the bridge part of the song, when the steadicam operator is on her. The frame casts a shadow as it's being carried off stage. And also the actual graphics being projected, then makes it that the cameras pick it up properly.
I once shot a commercial (background talent) with Dami Im and she was an absolute doll on set. She was very patient and warm to her child co-star and though this isn’t my favourite Eurovision entry from Australia, she did a magnificent job with it and I’m super proud of her. She’s a good human.
Thank you for the video. For me, this song, this performance remains the most favorite for several years. The song is my favorite of all Eurovision. The performance is just perfect, vocals, performance, color scheme of the stage
Also the live version is better than the recorded version - the added backing vocals and vocal ad libs at the end are marvellous and perfect for the competition aspect of the show
Dami Im's story is pretty cool actually, she went on Australia's version of X-Factor in 2013, she was voted out (before the live shows) because I think she forgot the lyrics mid-song and then she was brought back in after i think someone had to pull out of the comp. She was on Dannii Minogue's team (Dami's mentor) and her team was practically obliterated very early on, so it was just Dami and Dannii...Dami proceeded to DOGWALK the entire competition and brought the house down every single week and she ended up winning X-Factor that year. When she sang Purple Rain during the live shows, you knew she had already won the competition and the others were just making up the numbers. Still is the best vocalist I have ever heard.
Second suggestion : Week Failed to qualify to grand final but deserved to be on it. #5 Conan Osiris - Telemoveis (Portugal) #4 Mustii - Before the party's over (Belgium) #3 Sennek - A matter of time (Belgium) #2 Laura Rizzotto - Funny Girl (Latvia) #1 Zibbs - Stones (Switzerland)
Your reaction was exactly the same as mine. As soon as it ended I was mad it didn't win even though I hadn't listened to the winner yet😂 It took me years to finally appreciate the winner of 2016 (Jamala) but I so wish Australia won!
Ooooh... you're missing the 2014 runner up, the Common Linnets, from the Netherlands... that was such a beautiful performance and also listenable outside of Eurovision... but props to Dami In, she should've won that year! 🥰
I agree, Dami Im’s songs and performance was one of the best in Eurovision ever. An entry with similar intensity was Pastora Soler for Spain in 2012 with Quédate Conmigo. Heaven knows why she finished only 10th in the finals. I never get tired to watch her performance again and again - you should check it out.
She won the jury vote by an huge margin but politic stuff always helps to win Eurovision that's why Ukraine won thanks to televote in 2016 (cause they withdraw 2015) sorry if this offends someone but can't be any other reason to take over a lit performance like this.. Dami In would be always the real winner for me ❤
I agree with you, she was the best and my favorite that year as well. The juries all agreed on that since it was their winner too but then the televoters came and destroyed everything like they usually do.
Now, what has us Australian's ever done to you lads! We enjoy watching you... You should come to Australia some time and check it out. I'm sure you would love it. You should've seen us Aussies watching the final with Dami performing. My couch nearly was destroyed from excitement (not in a JD Vance kind of way) from the possibility of winning, only to lose to the Ukraine.
The year Crimea was annexed, Jamala's song was ok, vocally she's great but was yet another politically charged song. Dami should've won hands down, in every respect.
Easily the best australian entry of all time. I still love and prefer Jamala, the winner from Ukraine that year, but Dami deserved a win as well. What a year 2016 really.
This is a great song and Dami is a wonderful singer. But Jamala's 1944 is an all-time great single performance. But again, Dami was unbelievably great. Might have been a winner in a lot of years, but not when Jamala gave us 1944.
I'm from Melbourne and went to Stockholm for this Eurovision. The graphics Dami interacted with were projected onto a screen between her and the camera, You can see the screen being taken off the stage at about 5:51 and 5:54 - you'll see the black shadow of the edge of the screen moving across her dress as its taken off the stage. The roof shot at 05:45 was there to enable two guys to help her off the podium, their dark shadows can be seen in the aerial shot walking away from Dami, to then remove the screen from the stage. I sort of wish that wasnt part of her performance, it was more of a distraction if you ask me. Dami is a sensational singer, and it was amazing to be there for this and also her outdoor performances around Stockholm.
I think that was Australia's first time at eurovision... Just epic. I remember watching this with my family and we all thought she definitely won with this performance.
7:34 Ambitious camera work is still relatively new to Eurovision. Pre-programmed cutting and directing was introduced at the 2014 contest, but it wasn't until Armenia's performance in 2016 where you could sense a paradigm shift. I recommend watching Iveta perform "LoveWave" at the semi-final, where everything worked as intended. It clearly inspired Bambie Thug and their director this year. EDIT: I just remembered the most bonkers camera work before 2016 was, by far, the Belarusian performance in 2009. Looks like we've got a Top 5-worthy theme...
2016 was a year stacked with potential winners, but this song was my absolute favourite that year! Dami Im's vocals were an absolute masterclass. Incredibly emotive and powerful, she delivered one of the best performances of all time, which didn't rely on gimmicks or a backstory that relies on politics etc. In my humble opinion, this song should have won. It was much better than Jamala's song or performance, but I can see why people got behind Jamala that year.
It was SO close between Australia and Ukraine that year! But Jamala gave such an emotional performance and tbh nobody wanted to have the contest in Australia the next year! 😂
Australia can't host the contest. In case Australia won, the eurovision remain in Europe but the australian broadcaster can collaborate with an european one similar to ukraine and uk in 2023
Part of the reason Australia lost in 2016 was that it was our second year in the competition when a lot of people didn’t think we should be there. Our televotes were a lot lower than they should have been the first couple of years.
Justin Timberlake performed that year on Eurovision, you should watch it. So here's my list of Weekly TOP 5 non-participant acts of Eurovision. 1-Justin Timberlake live at the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest 2-Netta - Toy - Opening of the First Semi-Final - Eurovision 2019 3-ESC: LIVE - THE EUROVISION 2010 FLASHMOB! 4-Loreen - Forever | Eurovision 2024 | #UnitedByMusic 🇸🇪 5-Madonna, Quavo - Eurovision Song Contest 2019 (super controversial because of Madonna's vocals and political message performing in Israel)
13:20 they actually had a see through screen between Dami and camera to which the image was shot on. They then after the need was fulfilled took the screen away and moved it off stage a bit before the roof shot where Dami was the helped down by two stage workers. And after that the camera angle where the audience is behind Dami was done so that they could remove the podium she sat on.
Hi, would love if you guys could do the last place in Eurovision grand final, here are some that I would like to get highlighted: 1. Germany 2023: Lord of the Lost - Blood and Glitters 2. Germany 2022: Malik Harris - Rockstars (I so love this one too tbh) 3. Spain 2017: Manel Navarro - Do it for your lover (I know this had been an epic fail but I like the cool and chill vibes from this) 4. France 2014: Twin Twin - Moustache 5. Portugal 2018: Claudia Pascoal - O Jardim Note: you guys have watched Norway 2024: Gates - Ulveham, and I love it, so I wouldn't include it here. United Kingdom 2017: Lucie Jones - I will never give up 3. France 2018: Madame Monsieur - Mercy 4. France 2017: Alma - Requiem 5. Italy 2022: Mahmood & Blanco - Brividi I haven't included some that you have previously watched such as France 2021 (Barbara Pravi - Voila), Italy 2019 (Mahmood - Soldi), United Kingdom 2022 (Sam Ryder - Space Man)

Hi guys, I know people ask you to watch so many things, but it would really mean the world to me, other Aussies, and this amazing Aussie singer if you checked out some of her music videos. Cosima De Vito. “Now that you can’t have me” “One night without you” “When the war is over”. Her entire debut album (“Cosima”, from 2004) was written and produced by THE Diane Warren. I know you will love her voice. Cosima is Australia’s Celine Dion. Something different for you guys to watch/listen to. Lots of love and support from Australia, Mark xox
This is a great song but Jamala sang a really special song and deserved to win. This was Australia’s first time in the competition and their best result ever I think.
Check out another Australian singer’s work who was also on Eurovision- Jessica Mauboy Mauboy has a great career in Australia and is still largely unknown outside of Eurovision.
The real winner of 2016 for sure!!!!
SHE IS THE ONLY person who elevates the studio version of her song in that contest
