I grew up in Lakehurst, lived on Willow St. Worked in the McDonald's on the corner of Rt. 70. My grandfather's funeral was in Cathedral of the Air, followed by drinks and food at the Lakehurst Diner. Had my first sip of beer at the Airship Tavern. I swam in Lake Horicon, partied in the woods behind Pinehurst Estates, and walked the tracks from MTHS when it was time to skip class. I left in 1997, and every now and then I miss it.
I was there about 20 years ago... also was inside Hangar Number 1, long before they set up the tours and the museum in memoriam of the D - LZ 129 Hindenburg.
Being fascinated with Zeppelins for most of my life,I really need to visit Lakehurst at least once before I die. I know I'll probably never get to see Freidrichshafen.
In 1973 we found US Navy blimp gondolas from NAS Lakehurst in a nearby scrap yard. Lakehurst today is a Naval Air Engineering Center. It tested arresting hook landings of the F-35C. FLY NAVY🇺🇸
I was stationed at NAS Lakehurst in the 1970's with HS 75. It was a great place to be stationed. Hopefully one day I will get back there to see the Museum and take the tour. Thanks for posting this Brent.
Small bits of the ship. An engine and propeller. A tiny section of the framework. There is a full scale replica of part of the passenger decks you can tour. It’s not true that the “wreck” of the Hindenburg is at the Zeppelin Museum.
I do own a small piece of the Hindenburg I own about a 2 foot length piece of girder/Framework Of the Zeppelin! there is also part of a Hindenburg engine mount at the Workshop of the Lighter-Than-Air Society in AKRON, OH.
