- Here is our recently purchased 1898 Olympia music box in a carved mahogany cabinet playing "The Blue Bells Of Scotland". This music box is unusual in that I have done virtuallly nothing to it and it produces some of the nicest sound that I have ever heard from a music box of this size. My normal preference in music boxes is the larger disc models but I thought I would take a chance on this one as I loved the carved cabinet. You can imagine my surprise when I first wound it up and played the disc you are watching and listening to here. Thanks for stopping in for a visit and I hope that you enjoy the video.
I have inherited a Regina Music Box with nearly 75 discs and your Olympia far exceeds the tone and musicality of mine. What a treasure you have.
Try polishing up the combs or replacing them.
what a gift!!!!
2:03 Is when the actual music starts
you forgot that "thank me later" 😉
I hope someone pins this
Love the sound of this one, it literally sounds like it's happy to be playing
I am really liking these music box videos. The men that made and invented these surely made the most of a gift that God gave them. They are in a class all by themselves, and such a nice getaway from all the "noisey" music we have today!
My mother had music boxes all over the house when we were growing up, she was born in 1935 so most of them were fairly old, playing waltzes and the like. I found your channel trying to find some of those old tunes that I never knew the name to, and was just amazed by this wonderful music box of yours, what a remarkable sound it has. Thanks for sharing...
This is quite lovely!... I noticed that even the discs were works of art.
Daisy Flowers, Tommy's music to use everyone while procrasinating
I can my nephew did take a sleep. He sure sleep 🇮🇹SH
He sleepy when i was 👶
Yes indeed. If the discs were being made now, it would be with lasers. I have no idea how they would have made them years ago.
At least someone appreciates Art. This video is more than playing a song. The instrument itself is a work of art. we have boring cd players made of plastic and will fall apart after a few years but these instruments will last 100's of years.
I swear, this is genuinely the most beautiful music box I have ever heard. It sounds like an orchestra that just has a happy mood to it in general.
I remember my nanny telling about these music boxes when I hered it on you tube I cred because the music was so beauty full and it reminded me of my nanny who is no longer here for many years xx
I can see why it moved you so. It sounds so sweet.
I was listening again today, and I am just blown away by the beautiful haunting quality, of the sound these works of art could produce. Since this music box is in it's original un-restored condition, it must have only been played on Sundays, for guests. lol I was thinking how these would have been great in Twilight Zone or Dark Shadows episodes.
Delightful... clarity of sound and a lovely arrangement.
ABSOLUTELY,& MUSICALLY STUNNING TO ONES EARS AND SENSE'S!!! GOD BLESS YOU FOR PLAYING IT!!!
maybe the most beautiful tone I have ever heard on a music box, Thanks!
we used to have quality instruments even radio sets had good tone now its just a piece of plastic with lousy tone, we made Hifi and not WiFi out of wood and an enclosure. I remember the Atwater Kent radio and how it sounded like stereo on AM. Beautiful tone especially when tuned to a classical music station over 200 miles away.
Is it still
My dear late Father was born in 1898 and this music will remind me and my late Mother was born back in 1910 and was born on Vancouver Island British Columbia and was a Scots/Canadian on her late Mother`s side of the family this music will forever be in heart until I part from this God`s green earth and this will remind me of them Father passed away back 1984 and my late Mother passed away back in 1975 mat they Rest in Peace God bless them both always love you Mum and Dad xx
P.S That makes me half Scots/Canadian hence my name Alistair Richard May .
@Micheal Gilliland He's probably now 60 something
I just love listening to these wonderful machines and imagining previous generations enjoying it too. Kind of gives me a sense of where I am. Weird perhaps. These machines are so beautiful. Thank you so much for uploading.
It is so beautiful just amazing it takes my breath away
Beautiful machine. What a wonderful sound!
That sounds super lovely for a 117 year old Music Box:)! I like the craftsmanship of the cravings on the side with the picture inside the lid. It sounds like it should be played in a Teddy Bear Museum with Antique Teddy Bears:)! Nice Video, thank you:)!
I agree, this is so lovely. How intricate.
Sweetest tones of a lovely song! What a treasure to hear. Thank you for this gem!
Wow. How beautiful.
I swear, music boxes are like tiny orchestras. They have such a powerful song stored in a single disk instead of a stage.
That is absolutely beautiful.
Wow! That is just beautiful!
i just discovered your channel and ive watched a few videos already and the olympia is such a great music box compared to the others of yours ive heard. the notes shimmer compared to the others. i remember when i was a kid i would go to antique stores with my family and i would always gravitate to music boxes if i saw one. my mother had a box from the 60s that i would listen to as a very small child almost every day. it has a carved gnome on the lid and if i could get my sister to lend it to me ill record a video of it. theres something enchanting about an antique music box. i feel transported to another time and place and sometimes another dimension lol
SO beautiful!! Thank you for posting!!
You are. correct, what a beautiful sound.
Absolutely lovely. Thank you.
It's so precious..........thank you.

How beautiful
Beautiful case!
A pleasure as always to listen to your videos
In the era before mass media, this must have seemed like magic.
And all these years later the magic still touches us modern folk!
it still does :D
Does it still...

Beautiful
My boyfriend loves the music, He even made a song: Mulan Music Box. He even loves made that song for me and everyone :D Lovely!
That is soooo nice
Absolutely Heavenly 😇
Why do these music boxes always make me cry?
Because it's pure and nostalgic
Wonderful melodies! Nowadays these types of music-boxes are electronically imitated by some quartz clocks because they contains electronically recorded and programmed circuit board of sound chips connected to speaker.
I have this Olympia and this song disc, among others. It is breathtaking! The sound far surpasses the Reginas.
@rocketrelics Thank you so much! I'm pleased to hear that you enjoyed this.
It resonates nicely.
GORGEOUS!
Absolutely beautiful :)
Pure Beauty.
Outstanding tone -- you lucked into another great box!!!
@Westtoledoguy Thanks! Good to hear that you enjoyed this.
I grew up with this.
Amazing
Very very good
fantastic
I have heard that the discs that play the music for the Olympia are very fragile so from the amazing sound this machine makes, the Olympia and its discs have survived the tests of time and I think previous owner(s) have taken good care of it.
This thing kicks butt.
What is there not a Fisher-Price toy that worked in the same sort of concept?
@JochenKopf Thanks for the nice comments, JochenKopf. My Olympia music box featured here in the video is definitely not the one that the gentleman you mentioned in your comment has for sale. Happy New Year to you as well.
My uncle Lewis Andrew Shepard have this at home when i wasn't here back in 2017.
soo nice :)
The ring King !!
I love it.
Do you have any suggestions/tips for removing corrosion on these zinc discs? I can't find any information on the web for this and you are so knowledgeable. As always, thanks for all of your wonderful videos.
Felicitaciones, por tan hermosa rareza " no había visto algo de esa magnitud, yo poseo una " vitrola" de 1900 .saludos desde Chiloé chile.
thank you.....
I wish there is a way to copy or preserve this music disc as it literally is the same one as freddys and kt would be nice to have the nice polyphone to play the same disc.
@mayatatyana1 Thank you Maya! It's always a pleasure to see a comment from you!
how much did that music box set you back, I have often wonder. I enjoy just listening. Very relaxing music after a noisy day at work, 👍
Wow, what a nice arrangement, like on the Polyphon with 15,5" discs. I bought this disc in Nordhorn, where I was in September. I don't own a Polyphon yet, but when I do, I will upload the disc. - I imagine, this is not the Olympia machine from Mark, right? - Nice regards and a happy new year from JochenKopf
WOW!
@mermodfreres Thanks Jack! Always a pleasure to hear from you!
Wow!
감사합니다
And you don't need electricity, or batteries. Wonderful technology.
@amiedetherese Thanks for your always gracious comments!
I absolutely love the sound of these music boxes, do you have any advice on aquisition?
this video is more than to play music. its about the instrument that plays the music.
So beautiful I would love to talk to the creator of this Chanel.

Just love this. So so beautiful. Just wish I could share with friends. A 2 minute silent intro is long even for my patient friends. Would you consider posting another shorter version of when the music starts? Still it's very interesting. I think you could write a historical blog about this. I would read with a great interest. The musicality of these intricate players is completely captivating.

Maybe you were and you came back again.
Before vinyl? Nooo
@@Natashahoneypot Just letting you know... 3 years later... Maybe not so much but you never know... And I hada an 1800s craze back than
Stupid question: Are the discs interchangeable between makers and disc sizes? I can figure a box wont have enough teeth for a disc larger than its made for, but can it play any smaller discs?
No, and please don't try, you will damage your machine.
Doug: what kind of camera and microphone set do you use for your recordings??
Were are you buying these from
@joephelps11 Thank you!
Wow
How many pins is this?
It takes 58 seconds to turn the disc a round. How much you paid for this fine instrument? Thanks.
With this you can out hipster the hipster
But can it play the 9th Symphony? Sorry.
