What a lovely chap. Unpretentious, amazing compositions. Living proof that composition trumps any equipment. Glad you introduced us to him. That was refreshing.
What a nice video.... super simple thinking .... nothing has to be complicated... and Matt just shows how we should be doing things.... Thanks Roman for bringing this to us... Yoki...
The awesome photographs of the past were taken with old cameras. That's one reason why I'm willing to pick up a camera from the '90s or '70s. They got great work from those devices, and it's always interesting.
thanks for the effort and sharing. i am an appreciative subscriber. i thought Matt Hall's images were FANTASTIC. i really enjoyed the silhouettes. and walking about with two bodies and two primes was very clever. BIG thumbs up.
Love the video Roman, especially the question about shooting boring locations, I live in a small city Moncton NB Canada but have managed to get some decent shots with the XT30 and 18-55, made a video too if your interested. really enjoyed this thanks for sharing.
Really loved this interview, and his work is so up my alley. Going down the rabbit hole on his website now, so inspiring. I appreciate how unassuming and simple his approach is too.
One of the most inspiring videos I’ve seen to date👍 I like the vibe Matt delivers in this video. I like his approach to Street photography, the gear he uses and the results achieved. Great job Matt😊
Great video, this is basically the English equivalent of Paulie B's Walkie Talkie videos. Loved Matt's photos, very different to most other street photographers. Oh and I spotted my dad's Chinese restaurant (Charlie Chan) at 3:15 which was a nice bonus! Keep up the good work. Subbed.
Loved the images and great photographer and seemingly a lovely human being. Thanks for showcasing him on here Roman - awesome! I know we have to choose our equipment, and I'm glad he's happy with Fuji. I stuck to them for a decade and didn't realised how much they held my photography and my photographic business back. I changed over two years ago to a FF system and the difference was night and day. My customers all commented how my low light and evening shots from gigs and events, didn't look like mud anymore. The colours flourished, my AFC and my enjoyment of photography went over the moon. I could now pull up low-light, high ISO images from the shadows, that didn't turn to custard anymore. For somebody who shoots fast moving gigs and events, often in the evening, this is a must. The only person I blame is me. I'm filthy with myself for bumming it with Fuji for so long and crippling a decade of photography. I'm glad somebody is enjoying their gear, because it certainly aint me!
Right tools for the job! Even a 5D from 2005 will outdo a smartphone for dynamic range in the dark unless they really fudge it. APSC or 4/3 is great when there's light, when it's dark you just need more area for more photons at the same F-stop. I went straight for full frame from film, glad I never spent the money on good crop lenses to have to get rid of later. Eos RP lately, love the exposure and white balance and all that in view, or viewing images in the viewfinder when in bright sun.
That was outstanding! As a novice (seriously practicing photography for a bit more than a year now), I find myself being pulled in multiple directions a lot, between trying genres and feeling the need to learn tech stuff and the "go out and shoot" advice. It's nice to hear someone just keep doing what works for them, regardless of what the tech side is doing. It makes me feel better about my own approach thus far, shooting as much as I can with my lovely bridge camera. Cheers!
so cool to see Cambridge and another Photo Chat, talking stuff, walk around. Great format! ive been there to summer school in 2005 and this brings back memories. Another inspiration richer and want to got back. Thanks! Greetings from Germany 👍🏼
Ah, a man after my own heart. I live in London but love Cambridge and visit as often as I can. Also, just like Matt, I still own every camera I have ever bought and that is now around 70+ different ones. I did switch exclusively to Fuji in 2018 with the X-Pro2 after many years of using Nikon film and DSLR. Now, I have pretty much fallen in love with my Nikon Zf and that goes everywhere with me. Loved this video and have been a Roman Fox subscriber for ages.
Another great video , Roman ! Loved Matt's attitude & outlook on photography, down to earth basic, & able to use & capture what he has available to him. Always learn something new to try from your videos. Just keep it simple & make the best with the equipment you have.
Awesome video, show casing someone with a great eye for a photograph and just getting out there. I'm still using a Fuji xt2 for landscape photography. Regards from NZ
I've been really enjoying these interview vids. seeing how other photographers think/see the world/work in crafting their images. which is doubly awesome, because generally in my experience, other photographers I've met have been shy, introverted and kinda super secretive about their craft. or at least compared to all the musicians I work with on the weekly, who are ridiculously chatty, can talk for HOURS about music (and how!) and we often chat in that vague "creative" way that bridges how I work as a photographer, and they work as a musician. but other photographers, always a bit of a mystery. I know a few. friends with a bunch. but we rarely ask about each others methods/processes/thinking behind an image. wouldn't dare hahaha or maybe I'm just too used to musicians being (excuse the pun) LOUD about their practices. so this has been illuminating, thank you!
All Matt shots is what I've always wanted to achieve straight out of camera. I've always known there's always a bit of editing to get it darker in the shadows but his shots are right up my alley. Roman if you ever venture to New York you need to interview Matt Weber he's been on walkie talkie but I feel you'll get a different type of interview out of him and just wow the shots he's got over the years anyway much love keep up the content. Ps thanks for showing another creative side I didn't know I had

I cut a lot out yeah. Only left the best bits in terms of what viewers will find helpful. It seems around 15 min mark is the sweet spot for YT videos… at least for my channel
I literally take photographs of people all the time. As a job. Unfortunately, taking easy snapshots of random people just doesn’t excite me any more and definitely doesn’t fit my aesthetic. I’d rather stick to using the environment and being creative thanks 🙏
What a lovely chap. Unpretentious, amazing compositions. Living proof that composition trumps any equipment. Glad you introduced us to him. That was refreshing.
Ditto. My kind of photographer.
Love seeing him using older gear. Everyone seems to overlook the fact that all these cameras from the last ten years are more than capable.
Ah, yet another cool demonstration that composition almost always beats the gear. Thanks, Roman!
That XT1 is like an old beat up guitar. you know when a guy pulls something like that out and starts playing it you're going to hear something insane
Luv Matt's work ; strong Saul Leiter vibes
I thought the same and was surprised he was shooting with shorter focal lengths than Leiter did some of the time I think?
Exactly what I thought when I saw his style. Beautiful work.
@@Adobobandit Same here. Especially the image at 9:00. A banger.
Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)

Great images, love his style

Brilliant interview Roman, brilliant photograher Matt Hatt! Thank you!!!
Love his photos and hearing his take on photography!
Thanks for sharing Matt's work. His photographs are truly beautiful.
Matt's style reminds me a lot of Saul Leiter, really fascinating photography and a nice, modest guy too. Thanks for the interview!

Matt is really unassuming. I agree with him about not using half of the features of the camera!
What a fantastic and inspiring video I would love to see more of a similar style. So natural and easy to watch. You make a good team !
Seems an awesome man, and his photos are so good!
Awesome Photographer - thanks for this interview 👍

Man those silhouettes are great
Thanks!
Thank you so much !
have to say it is really stylish
Stunning work with an aesthetic I often try to create to some degree as a beginner and fail. Some really good tips!
It's nice to see he keeps himself busy when Muse aren't touring.
It took me way too long to understand this haha. Let’s just say Matt knows his way round a festival or a rave
nice work matt
This video was awesome!
