Well, I use the Megadap ETZ21 II with my Nikon Z9. And I use with a wide variety of Sony lenses, including the Sony 200-600mm and Sony 600mm 4.0 GM and some others. And yes, all lenses are working on the Z9 with the Megadap adapter. Working means the Z9 can focus and also things like Eye autofocus and Animal Autofocus are working. For moving subjects like birds though you have to make compromises. Less on focus acquisition but more on the performance of subject tracking. I simply missed shots I would get with the A1 here. Also, with the Sony 50mm 1.2 GM focussing works only reliable at f/1.8, f/1.2 you cannot focus and f/1.4 sometimes only. With the Sony 135mm 1.8 it is the same, you cannot focus reliable at f/1.8. All in all not bad, it is a good product but requires further firmware updates.

First is that my grandson, who uses the Sony A7III body with some very nice lens, might consider lending me one or two for use on my Z9 with that ETZ21 adapter. Secondly, and totally unrelated, I'm thinking that the absence of a proper cinema lens for the Z9 might be a barrier for a videographer who is interested in using the "affordable" Z9 ( compared to commercial video cameras). It would be great if you could do a field test of this combination. Thank you very much, and once again, congratulations. Roberto from Italy.
Hi Roberto have you tried that combination? I'm thinking about doing the same. What Sony has to offer in terms of stacked sensor cameras is either not what I want (a9 not enough MP) or way too expensive (a1)

@@robertobellentani1242 hi Roberto, the next Sony camera with a stacked sensor to be released will be the a9III as far as I know. I don't think it will be a direct competitor to the Nikon z8, as the z8 is competing against the Sony a1. I guess the a9iii will be great for pictures but won't be as good as the z8 for video, and will stay below 40MP, otherwise there would be no need for a a1 anymore. And I think the a9III will be a lot more expensive than the z8, since even the a9II still cost 700€ more than the z8 and is already four years old.
Thank you for the tested sample of various lenses. My Megadap can’t mount with my Z9. It won’t firmly lock/click the lens. Tried it out and no AF, can’t even manually focus. So i was surprised you were able to mounted your Tamron 35-150. Hmmm.
I've seen a lot of photography channels on TH-cam bash Nikon because they haven't put out as many z lenses as they think Nikon should. You can adapt almost every other manufacturers lenses to the z cameras but they can't adapt the z lenses. I'm not sure if Nikon can adapt the Canon R mount but I would think they can. This makes it easier to transact from another brand to Nikon. You can keep your lenses until you can afford to sell them off and replace them with Nikon lenses.
ATG Gold S 200-500/2.8 [(400-1,000/5.6) modified for Sony SLT-A99 series + ATG A to E Adapter] works very well on ETZ to Z! It's not your everyday lenses that pros can afford. Prices of that Sigma during those days were over $30,000.00!
I will have no need for that particular adapter myself, but it is good to see that adapters in general are getting better and better. My only remark is that connection device which you use to update this adapter, looked a bit shady. For 250$ I'd like to see a better built solution.
Thanks for this. Its exciting to see that some of these excellent lenses can be adapted well to the Nikon mirrorless platform. I'm intrigued about the possibility of mounting the Sony 200-600mm lens on a Nikon Z9. Just a question about something other than photography... Could you provide the name of the artist and the song you used starting at the 14:23 mark? Thanks for your help.
Thanks for the positive feedback. The song's name is "Into The Blue (instrumental)", the artist is "Katcamusic" and the download is from motionarray.com where I have a license to use music for publications like TH-cam.
There is one thing, that I find quite interesting: Using Leica M-cameras and lenses as well as Sony cameras I know, that adapting M-Lenses to Sony bears the problem of a reduced corner sharpness - mainly with wide angle lenses - and smeared corners. So one has to close the aperture to obtain a better quality. In other words: M-Lenses perform on Lica M-cameras much better because M-cameras have a thinner cover-glass on their sensors as Sony-cameras. On the other hand it is said, that Nikons Z7 II are perfectly usable to adapt Leica-M-lenses as the Nikons do also have a rather thin cover-glass on the sensors. Now ... if you adapt Sony-lenses, which are designed for Sony-sensors isn't there not the same problem because of different cover-glasses on the sensors? (Sorry for m rather bad English, but I think most people her do not understand German ...)
Have you had a chance to test the Nikon z9 with the Sony 200-600mm? Im really interested in gettin a Nikon z8 but i don't want to replace the somy lens
Hi, I watched this video a while ago and was intrigued, so I’ve just watched it again! Can you please tell me, when you moved the aperture ring on the Sony E mount G-master lens, did it change the aperture on the Z9 body? A reply would be greatly appreciated as I love these lenses, but use Nikon Z bodies only Regards TonyH
Thanks for all that information. I wondered if ALL of the Sony lenses will fit on the Z7ii along with Sigma Art lenses. I have not purchased the Z7ii yet but would love your input on this. And, is a separate adapter needed for Sigma lenses than the FTZ II adapter?
Say, here's a really good question. as anyone tried adapting a Phase one Schneider lens to the Megadap etz21, and then of course to a Z camera, with a Kipon M645-SE ES adapter? I'd be very interested to hear from anyone who might have tried this? I know the Kipon M645-SE ES adapter does not provide auto focus, and I have a reasonable understanding of the technical reason why that is not possible, but I would hope that the electronic apeture of the lens could be controlled by a Z camera via these two adapters.
I use Z7 + Tamron 35-150mm f/2-2.8 with ETZ21 and it force unknown built-in lens profile in NEF file when I open in Adobe Lightroom Classic. That make my photo a pincushion distortion. I want to know if you have that problem?
As you have a contact for megadap .... could you ask them if they are designing an adaptor for nikon mount lenses onto sony e mount with autofocus I'm hoping to adapt some of my nikon and tamron nikon mounts to my sony a7r4 ... especially my tamron 150 to 600
Indeed - there are various Sony EF lenses which are nice on the Z9. There are also a couple of Tamron lenses which are very special and come only with Sony FE mount. Using these lenses on the Nikon Z9 will be another topic for a video :)
You know what my reason is for wanting to use this adapter on the Z9? It’s because the Sony 50mm 1.2 GM lens is so much more portable than the Nikon Z50mm f1.2 lens
Hi there, I’m thinking to get the ETZ21 Pro and the Tamron 35-150 f/2-2.8 E Mount for my Z9. I think to do that to save about $400/£300 (instead of buying the Tamron lens with Z mount)and on top of that to have the adapter there in case will need a Sony lens in the future. Can anybody tell me if this is the right decision? If is anybody with experience in this particular matter, I’d be more than happy to know their advice. With this lens I’ll mostly shoot weddings, this being the main reason I’ll buy it. Thanks a lot!
I’m looking into this because I want to get the Nikon Z7II and the Sony 12-24 F4. Do you know if there’s any vignetting or change in image quality on the edges when adapting ultra wide angle Sony lenses using the Megadap?
@@mathphotographer thank you. I am renting the Z7II next weekend to check the image quality when shooting very long exposures (60-90 seconds). I didn’t like the amount of grain on the Sony A7R3 but Sony is the brand that goes as wide as 12mm
Great info! I especially like the idea of the cinema lenses as I am a hybrid shooter. Apart from the focus speed, do other functions such as switches, buttons, stabilisation and manual focussing (hopefully linear)of the lenses work as usual? 👍🏾🙏🏾
Yes they seem to work, at least in my testing period I did not find any features not working. But as said in another comment, I will continue testing, in particular with Sony cinema lenses, and then get back with another video.
Great reviews from you sir, i have this on my z2 , works well with ziess lenses and sony but not so good with sigma art 85 f2 or 35 f2 get a lot of out of focus pics and roving .
Thanks Ken for the positive feedback and thanks for sharing your own experience. I am not surprised to hear what you said about Sigma, in particular older Sigma lenses I own had autofocus issues (e.g., front focus or back focus) already natively and then it gets worse of course with an adapter.
I found this when using aperture ring on Sony 50GM. I try to turn the ring from 16 to A, then the junction part rattles or moves a bit. So it seems the adapter will move a little when you turn it clockwise ! Is it normal ? Z lens don’t have this issue.
Great review. The only thing I’m curious about is autofocus for video. Do you know if it behaves the same as native z mount lenses where it can slowly and smoothly shift focus between subjects or is it sudden and quick like f mount lenses adapted to z mount with an FTZ. This is why I sold my f mount lenses and ftz adapter because f mount lenses are not good for autofocus on z system for video if you need smooth autofocus transition. Most of my lenses are manual focus but when adapting a lens with autofocus I will always think how does it perform with video.
Thanks for your positive feedback. I will further test this out and shoot Sony cincema lenses on the Nikon Z9. When I know more, I will get back with a video.
Thanks Massimo, I only tested the Tamron 35-150mm f/2-2.8, and with this lens the adapter works perfectly together on the Nikon Z9. The programming of the Tamron lens via the Tamron lens utility is something I just looked into this weekend. Most of the functions are available on the Nikon Z9 via the adapter. To make an example, via the Tamron lens utility you can program smooth video transitions between two arbitrarily chosen focus points in the scene. The transition works fine with the adapter on the Nikon Z9 but the speed of the transition I could not change as I can it for my Sony A1. So almost every button and customization is working, in particular quick autofocus and focus tracking but some "exotic" functions like programmable video transition speed are not yet working with the ETZ21.
@@mathphotographer thank you! Is the user experience close to ftz? I need a small and light telephoto lens and I am undecided whether to buy ftz and 70-200f4 or etz21 and tamron 70-180 2.8 ... any suggestions for me about it?
@@mathphotographer Muss man ja auch nicht. Danke für die Empfehlung. Gerade im Bereich 28mm dachte ich nämlich an das Sony mit f2. Nikon Variante hat 2.8. Mal sehen wo es hingeht :)

Exactly what I was looking for, thank you! Are you German btw.? :D Your accent sounds German. This probably also would mean that the adapter is available in Germany which is great. One more thing: how is the AF performance in videos with moving subjects? One thing is being able to recognize eyes/faces, the other one is real fast-tracking and on-point autofocus in videos, I think that's a harder task to accomplish, therefore I'm not completely sure if the performance is similar to native lenses in this scenario.
As far as I hear from others, yes, flawless on the Z6 with, what I hear, most lenses. Likely not with all (see another comment here below the video from another user of the ETZ21) lenses but working for most combos, yes.
Thanks for this video, very well made. Question, I have heard that in previous version you can put Canon lens + Sigma MC11 onto this adapter to be able to use Canon mount (ef) lenses, did you get to try this ?
Thanks Bobby, no, I did not try that myself but believe that Megadap is explicitely saying that various lens mount adapters can be combined with the ETZ21, so I find it not unlikely that what you heard is indeed true.
If E to Z works, then Z to E should- but i don't see it. Is this just not desirable? I'm married to the nikon z lenses, but I'd love to try a sony body out.
It is the distance from lense to sensor that matters. Sony has the 2 millimeters more than nikon z. So adapting sony to nikon is possible by creating an adapter that is 2 millimeters thick, adapting nikon to sony is not.
Bro, it looks great, but you need to make this a lot harder for the camera for me to buy this, Try it outdoors with moving a subject, comparing it with regular z or f mount lenses
Ha! I hoped the two series of sample images outside provided some proof of evidence how it is shooting the adapter outside in the field ;) I think I mentioned it somewhen in the video: shooting a native Z-lens on a Z-Camera body is always the best combination. But if you own some pro Sony lenses or if you wanna shoot an E-Mount lens on a Nikon-Z Camera, then this adapter is a solution. Clearly, if you then get exactly the same lens type as a Nikon-Z lens, your shooting will be even happier :)
I got the megadap ETZ21 and my 16-34 F4 PZ does NOT work. I've got a nikon Z6 with 3.40 firmware version. I can't zoom in or out? Neither the PZ slider nor the zoom ring would work... Can you please help?
Ha! Respectfully disagree :) Sony makes excellent lenses in the G-Master line-up and also in the Carl Zeiss line-up. But the field of application of this adaper, as said in the video, is a different one: if you have the same lens available in Nikon-Z and Sony-E mount, your comment is spot on: why using a Sony lens with adapter if you already have that type of lens from Nikon ... but there are some lenses which are just not yet available in the Nikon-Z portfolio, and then using a Sony lens with adapter makes sense in my opinion.
Off topic but I had to laugh when I found out that all cockpit scenes in Top Gun 2 where filmed with Voigtländer 21mm f1.4 lenses. So much for Nikon canon Sony Leica Zeiss. When you need the best for scenes costing $11000 per hour to fly you use Voigtländer.

Important to note that latest ETZ21 Pro adapter works perfectly, but that earlier versions like to regular ETZ21 did not.
Great Adapter!!! this makes me very happy I have decided to go back to Nikon for mirrorless. I hope this company makes an adapter for my L Glass too.
LTZ21?
With AF, this adapter would be fantastic for Zeiss Batis lenses!
Indeed fantastic for a lot of Sony-Zeiss lenses - and there are plenty of excellent lenses from Zeiss with Sony E-Mount.
Can you do the megadap etz21 pro with sony pz lenses using the nikon remote control to zoom in and out please
have you tried the new ”pro” version of the adapter if the 85mm 1.4 fits better etc?
Brilliant demonstration. Thank you.
Thanks Bruce.
I'm worried about losing Z8's weather sealing. Can you tell me if this setup will be weather-sealed?
I will have no need for that particular adapter myself, but it is good to see that adapters in general are getting better and better. My only remark is that connection device which you use to update this adapter, looked a bit shady. For 250$ I'd like to see a better built solution.
Good review! Thank you!
@@mathphotographer Thank you very much!
It's not the adapter's fault if some lenses are too tight. the same is also the case with walimex and nikon. very tight.
Thank you for this review. Is the function button of the Tamron 35-150 operational with the adapter?
There is one thing, that I find quite interesting:
Using Leica M-cameras and lenses as well as Sony cameras I know, that adapting M-Lenses to Sony bears the problem of a reduced corner sharpness - mainly with wide angle lenses - and smeared corners.
No issues with corner sharpness in my testing, looks actually very good and natural.
@@mathphotographer Sounds good!
So a Nikon is - as it seems - a great addition to the system, especially when you also use Leica M-lenses ...
A reply would be greatly appreciated as I love these lenses, but use Nikon Z bodies only
Regards TonyH
I need to try this out ... interesting thought from your side.
Great video thanks for making it! Amazing how far adapted has come. Any concerns about voltage between Sony lens and Nikon bodies?
Is this some magic here😳💥💯💥😳
Indeed :)
Good product review. Is this adapter fitbon nikon dslr apsc and full frame?
Generally, this adapter works nicely on my Nikon Z8. However, the adapter does not appear to correct geometric distortion.
Can you recommend me a good Nikon lens adapter to Sony cameras ?
As you have a contact for megadap .... could you ask them if they are designing an adaptor for nikon mount lenses onto sony e mount with autofocus I'm hoping to adapt some of my nikon and tamron nikon mounts to my sony a7r4 ... especially my tamron 150 to 600
The correction profile of the lense is not added to the raw?
Choosing it manually in Lightroom is no issue if you work with RAW files.
Thank you very much for a very interesting video.
Pleasure :)
Sony FE 20-70 mm f/4 G would be interesting to shoot on my Z9.
Indeed - there are various Sony EF lenses which are nice on the Z9. There are also a couple of Tamron lenses which are very special and come only with Sony FE mount. Using these lenses on the Nikon Z9 will be another topic for a video :)
What about IBIS and aperture control
I like that it's thinner compare to Nikon's ftz ii adapter 😮👍
You know what my reason is for wanting to use this adapter on the Z9? It’s because the Sony 50mm 1.2 GM lens is so much more portable than the Nikon Z50mm f1.2 lens
Hi there,
I’m thinking to get the ETZ21 Pro and the Tamron 35-150 f/2-2.8 E Mount for my Z9.
Is the lens release button of the adapter overlap with fn2 button of the nikon z body?
I’m looking into this because I want to get the Nikon Z7II and the Sony 12-24 F4. Do you know if there’s any vignetting or change in image quality on the edges when adapting ultra wide angle Sony lenses using the Megadap?
No - I did not try ultra-wide like 12mm. Will look into it. Thanks for your comment.
Has anyone used Sigma e 150-600mm sports lens with this adapter?
Great reviews from you sir, i have this on my z2 , works well with ziess lenses and sony but not so good with sigma art 85 f2 or 35 f2 get a lot of out of focus pics and roving .
Thanks Ken for the positive feedback and thanks for sharing your own experience. I am not surprised to hear what you said about Sigma, in particular older Sigma lenses I own had autofocus issues (e.g., front focus or back focus) already natively and then it gets worse of course with an adapter.
Can we set custom control i.e. exposure compensation to the adapted lens ring like the native Z lens?
I found this when using aperture ring on Sony 50GM. I try to turn the ring from 16 to A, then the junction part rattles or moves a bit. So it seems the adapter will move a little when you turn it clockwise ! Is it normal ? Z lens don’t have this issue.
No noise/rattle on my one ... maybe you should check with a service center?
What Firmware did you use for this video? Because on my test with the 35 150 the meta data seems corret.
Any way, great adapter!
Good point, I need to check the firmware, maybe I missed an update. Thanks!
Hi, I'm curious to know how it works with the Tamron 70-180 2.8 and the Nikon Z9 ... have you tested it? congratulations for the review!
Great video! What's the song at 14:24? :)
The song's name is "Into The Blue (instrumental)", the artist is "Katcamusic" and the download is from motionarray.com where I have a license to use music for publications like TH-cam.
Hi! Did you try Samyang lenses? Danke, Stephan
Exactly what I was looking for, thank you! Are you German btw.? :D
Your accent sounds German. This probably also would mean that the adapter is available in Germany which is great.
One more thing: how is the AF performance in videos with moving subjects? One thing is being able to recognize eyes/faces, the other one is real fast-tracking and on-point autofocus in videos, I think that's a harder task to accomplish, therefore I'm not completely sure if the performance is similar to native lenses in this scenario.
nice video, does it work with z6?
As far as I hear from others, yes, flawless on the Z6 with, what I hear, most lenses. Likely not with all (see another comment here below the video from another user of the ETZ21) lenses but working for most combos, yes.
will it work on nikon z5?
I have not tried it but I am sure it will work.
The Fringer EF-NZ adapter will let you put your Canon EF and EFS glass on your Nikon Z bodies with all the same functions!
Does IBIS still works well ? Thank you for the review.
IBIS in camera body works with third party lenses and adapters.
shoot videos on z9 with fe lenses and show us :)
If E to Z works, then Z to E should- but i don't see it. Is this just not desirable?
I'm married to the nikon z lenses, but I'd love to try a sony body out.
Good question, no idea why currently we see only one direction.
It is the distance from lense to sensor that matters. Sony has the 2 millimeters more than nikon z. So adapting sony to nikon is possible by creating an adapter that is 2 millimeters thick, adapting nikon to sony is not.
@@hans-karl thanks for answering that! I owe you a beer!
@@hans-karl That makes perfectly sense to me, thanks Hans-Karl. Very natural and straightforward explanation why we see one direction only.
Doesn´t matter, Sony of Nikon lenses on the Nikon Z9, they light rays hit both on an excellent SONY sensor!
Lol - fair point :)
I got the megadap ETZ21 and my 16-34 F4 PZ does NOT work. I've got a nikon Z6 with 3.40 firmware version. I can't zoom in or out? Neither the PZ slider nor the zoom ring would work... Can you please help?
Why? The Sony lenses don’t come close to Nikon lenses
👌
:)
I got the ETZ21 and it very tight I have to use force to get it of my Z8 I am not impressed
Lol :) I was not aware of that fact point, thanks for sharing William.
Youre German, right?
this video made me feel SO BROKE.
Ah, maybe just get a Sony camera … no adapter needed and no problems either
Lol - that's of course the most simple solution: if you wanna shoot Sony lenses, get a Sony camera body :)
Trump needs to educate the Audience during his reply. Like you said- using terms that she has no understanding at all. This will show who is in the "Know" and who needs to "Go".
Dang this is huuge.
Indeed :)
Just get the new Techart TZE-02, it's better in every respect.
I watch and am extremely happy with many of your videos, but as an Englishman, I do wish that you’d pronounce “zeed” and not “cee”. A C-mount is something different and you are, afterall, from Central Europe!
Thanks Stephen, I can not say more to your fair point than "yes, guilty and you are right" :) I lived in the US for a longer time and my English is really a bit that wishy-washy you typically get at a US University Campus when 100+ nations and accents live in the same language melting pot :) I try hard to be a better English speaking version of myself but when I concentrate on content in video making, the language focus fades out ...
@@mathphotographer obviously you are well educated (I mean beyond a few languages), so go for “cee” and I will suffer in silence!
So I wonder how you would pronounce this camera when it would be Nikon C instead of Nikon Z ?
I guess this subtle difference doesnˋt matter to you 😉
