Thunderfoot never understood why knowing an experiment would fail should be completed anyways. The opportunities and discoveries in experiments are truly the find, even in failures.
Exactly, if I predicted that something is totally impossible and was proven wrong I think I would be hyped as fk. If they told me they could walk on a cloud and then did it I wouldn’t sit back smugly and be like “ok… so…. Whatever”
its likely a deep rooted problem with his upbringing. perhaps scared of failure as it lead to severe ridicule. therefore in his mind nobody should try anything new, as if they fail theyll be "stupid" (he wants them to fail, though. so he can take the place of the people that ridiculed him as a child)
Test it anyways just to see if your random idea works. That's the logic I apply to my job. Just be prepared to fail and don't risk everything on the first test.
Science is about proving things wrong, not proving them right. If an experiment disproves your hypothesis then congratulations you learned something. Find out why you were wrong, reformulate your hypothesis, and keep trying again until you're right.
@@mawnkey To add on to your statement, because even if it does not work, it might be closer to working than you originally thought. Like you might be right it wouldnt work, but it might be very close, and then, as you said, you tweak it a bit.
There's really two possible explanations for Mason's fall. 1. some event or series of events (in 2016 most likely) fried his brain and turned him into a troglodyte. 2. he was like this from the start, but was not under sufficient scrutiny to be exposed until he finally was under such scrutiny.
It's 2. I remember he made a video filming himself with thermal cam while cycling and concluded that the areas with the most cooling were the areas most bright. But Brexit did reveal his idiocy to the world, yeah.
@@MrRavellon Well... More bright on an IR camera means more IR radiation from those zones, and IR radiation carries heat... So he would be right if he was strictly talking about cooling via radiation. Of course radiation is probably among the smallest contributors to overall cooling for a human cycling in a habitable atmosphere. If he were to argue that the body moves heat to these locations in order to achieve more efficient cooling he could still be right, although given the barely anything I know of thermodynamics the efficiency gain would have to be impressive to offset the waste heat generated by concentrating the heat in specific areas in the first place. I'm not sure I buy this idea. The primary problem is that an area could stay cool for two reasons. 1. It's simply not generating [excess] heat. 2. It is cooling as quickly as it is generating heat. Neither of these options accords with the conclussion that a greater IR signature corresponds to more efficient cooling. I'll check if I can find the video I vaguely remember spotting it. See if he's making sense or just crazy and stupid.
@@MrRavellon That video is from 2016 so is a bit dubious as evidence for theory 2. I am upset that in the 8 years since he's gotten the crowdfunded thermal camera he's seemingly only used it 8 times, mostly in the first three years since getting it. But... Yeah he's seemingly talking about radiation as a cooling mechanism. What's interesting to me is that, while he exercises the arms flair up while the legs stay cool, and then the moment he rests, the legs flare up as well. Moreover he stops recording as soon as he stops exercising and makes no record of the return to the at rest condition. The other video where he comes out of a sauna and takes a cold shower is a next level of idiotic. He demonstrates a gross misunderstanding of the classic 1987 film Predator, and keeps sounding like an idiot.
@@cobusvanderlinde6871 we don't really cool via radiation of heat, the heat loss that way is negligible. We cool via sweat evaporation and direct heat exchange with air. So the most effective cooling surfaces as he started to exercise would be the darkest ones, as those would be the surfaces with highest evaporation rate. I don't remember him ever mentioning that he wasn't going to consider evaporation for his "experiment" he just assumed radiation was it.

I actually left a comment on Thuderfoot channel a while ago that he should stop live streaming the launches in case the rocket worked. He did not listen.
Even so it was also kinda pathetic to act smug and superior to the very first tests of the rockets, when they even achieved what they wanted to with each mission, an iterative refinement process. They fully expected the rocket to explode, yet critics like thunderfoot go for this low hanging fruit to just point to the rocket exploding and go "haha stupid elon musk guise amiright". Which ends up making them ignore all the knowledge gained and advancements made with each test, so when it actually works they just look like fools to everyone including themselves, because they have convinced themselves that each test was a failure, so why did it suddenly work? @@Icetea-2000 Ya I know what you mean. Like when they said BEFORE HAND a successful mission is the rocket clearing the tower, everything else after that is gravy. @@sydtopia1 These people seem to not be able to count anything SpaceX does as a win unless they literally achieve everything that they ever promised as a company in one mission. If you just keep laughing every time they don’t do literally that, you’ll look silly and get real quiet once they’ve actually done it. The only way these people make sense is if they TRULY believe themselves that SpaceX will never succeed with their mission of developing Starship functionally and flying to Mars. Only if you’re 100% certain they will not be able to achieve this would this stance of ridicule make any sense. But seeing these people, it doesn’t seem like they have thoroughly thought their own logic through using reason, they just seem to funnel their hatred for Elon Musk, or private companies, or whatever into it and willingly blind themselves from reality. Maybe it’s also just the pride of these people making them unwilling to admit to being wrong, so they just double down more and more and it puts them on this track that will eventually go off a cliff when SpaceX achieves everything they doubted all that time.

"Partial success" WHAT A CLOWN Booster? - Controlled Catch Ship? - Controlled landing in the same place as intended I think Thunderf00t is just too special to announce that someone succeded
We mere mortals could only dream of understanding such things on Thunderf00t's level. He's intellectually beyond us plebs, down here on the ground settling for mediocrity. He truly is the savior.
You seem to have missed the massive explosion of that "controlled landing". All it did was slow down then blow up. And it hitting its target really is not that impressive when you consider how much harder it is to hit Mars. This is child's play and just straight forward math, it's simple ballistics. Doing it for the first time is impressive, but this has been done hundreds if not thousands of times, it's exactly what ballistic missiles do.
@@zagreus5773 This has been never done before, the controlled landing occured as planned, you may not know this bc you only care about one side, but the Ship is not supposed to land on water, it doesn't have to survive, there's no point in it, and it exploded only because it landed on water. I have no idea what you mean by "hitting the target" and "hitting the mars" and I'm pretty sure that the landing space on mars will be much more stable than the sea.
@@zagreus5773 I forgot to add that comparing starship's ship to a ballistic missile is ridiculous for many reason: Ballistic missiles do not weight hundreds of tons, their speed on impact is not 5km/h but rather 24000km/h, their PURPOSE is to explode not to land and many many more, the aerodynamics the whole building is different!
Remember when musk talked about mars missions in 2022? Yeah how's that going? Seems like somebody has to cope for believing a coplete belend on things he has no clue about.
Regardless of how one may feel about Elon, that doesn't diminish SpaceX's accomplishments. All the people involved in pulling off the booster catch deserve all the accolades we can give them. Thunderf00t has become a bitter old man who can't admit when he's wrong. If he had listened to the audio, he would have known what was happening. As to the fact that Starship exploded after touching down in the ocean... Let's take a scorching piece of equipment, plunge it into the cold sea, and not expect bad things to happen? Landing Starship in the ocean is outside its design parameters. Ok, I'm done ranting.
I think he and a lot of people in general overestimate elons actual work at SpaceX. God knows he couldn't weld two pieces of metal or calculate reentry heating. He's there for two things, fund it, although SpaceX has become a lot more profitable, and "ha ha funni Reddit meme we need to make the rocket pointy"
I'm sure Jeff Bezos must be a great CEO (he managed to make Amazon one of the largest companies in the world), but the reason why SpaceX is so much more successful than Blue Origin is apparently due to Elon Musk being a much better CEO than Jeff Bezos. If you think it's due to SpaceX having better engineers than BO, then ask yourself: who hired those engineers?
I think they activated the abort system on starship when it splashed down. This has something to do with US law when they're testing rockets and ICBMs they don't want anything falling into the wrong hands.
A chemist expects everything to go exactly as planned, every time. An engineer expects everything to go wrong, all the time. That's why he mocks anything that blows up when the final design is not intended to. He doesn't understand that destructive testing is not comparable to a product demonstration. He's mired in the old way of rocketry, where everything is microtested before anyone in the public gets to see it, and the very visible part has the maximum possible chance at success. SpaceX has taken more of a 'try it and see' approach to testing, disregarding the negative press which highly visible anomalies bring. They've continually called what they are doing a 'testing campaign'. Doing things in an unexpected way and succeeding is kind of SpaceX's thing, though.
Thanks to the current Ukrainian war I have stopped laughing at engineering failures. Russia getting hammered by Ukrainian drones in the air, land and sea? They have the industrial capabilities to catch up and sustain it with their own money. Chinese new submarine sank while in dock and their rockets dropping out of the sky? They'll fix and learn from it. They'll fix it and learn something from it. Space X rockets exploding during testings? Their subsequent vehicles become better and better.
SpaceX actually is doing what the Soviets did during the space race. Test rockets, let them fail, then improve. The Soviets actually mastered the closed cycle combustion which Americans thought wasn't physically possible. When the USSR collapsed, US companies started working with Russians and couldn't believe the Russian engine specs until they saw it in person. Basically the Russians solved the problem through trial and error. Americans whiteboarded the issue, thought there were too many problems, and abandoned the idea.
A sane person expects 2024 technology to surpass 1956 achievements. But here we are. Doing memes and high definition live broadcasts of explosions and rockets going nowhere with nobody and nothing inside.

Thing is, he actually made a very significant contribution to chemistry, the discovery of solvated electrons is his to claim by right and you can watch his videos on the subject, see him be mystified by what he's seeing and then slowly develop the idea over time. It has the potential to massively improve safety in foundries, deep see welding etc and it doubtlessly has applications we can't dream of now, in these early years of research. He's not even that wrong about Elon's flaws, he just forgets that his failures and foibles, inability to not predict a timeline and budget 3x smaller than reality, don't mean that he can't pull of a good chunk of the impressive things he says he can. This leads to goalpost moving, coping, and seething when inevitably he perseveres and achieves what thunderf00t didn't think he ever could.

Exactly, if I predicted that something is totally impossible and was proven wrong I think I would be hyped as fk. If they told me they could walk on a cloud and then did it I wouldn’t sit back smugly and be like “ok… so…. Whatever”

I think he got a big head from the solar roadway stuff and the like, and he’s been looking for an Elon scalp since his vacuum sealed subway project

I made fun of them saying it was successful back in the day when it blew up. Now I get it. Kinda missed the memo on this one. Good explanation.

Thunderf00t is so hilarious in that he has simultaneously been a voice of (slightly pretentious) reason and a debunker of bs, and also a complete tool who doesn't know what he's talking about. Genuinely a very interesting character
He started with the easy stuff where common sense was obvious. When he moved over to the more advanced shit he was suddenly stuck in a sphere of mankind's development where his intelligence was sorely lacking. You don't exactly have to be a genius to debunk an obvious scam and he did pretty good with that.
I think it's good to be skeptical. But he crosses a line into cynicism.
It’s easy to “debunk” something that was never meant to be anything but a publicity stunt. Anyone could “debunk” Nikola or Juicero.
Trying to prove a company wrong that took over 80% of world wide space faring, and made Boing into a joke and force Airbus to capitulate and fire 2500 engineers, is beyond ignorant.
@@vanrex7682 Of course, there are some legitimate criticisms to be made. Musk’s timelines are often wildly over-ambitious, and the final product less innovative than the concept.

@@andybrice2711 yeah there are a lot of questionable decisions made at his other companies, though honestly I don’t see any with SpaceX.

Both happened the very next year! Then he moved that goal post to "they'll never be profitable" about both and he still says that to this day even thought The SEC and earnings reports seem to disagree with his feelings! He keeps getting but hurt about the Boring company too, because they are focusing on improving the hardware. Last month they tested proof-rock 3 at giga-texas, and from when it went down to when it came up It ended up being about 170 meters/day which would make it on-par with the fastest bores in the world by distance and the fastest by volume removed!
