    Hi Chris,
I have 40 years of background as a telecommunications technician. I have worked in Faraday cages on several occasions. Those cages were to greatly suppress radio frequencies during tuning and calibrations. Anywhere near an EMP nuke and I doubt they would protect much. However, some principles are applicable to EMP protection. For instance, as build, the grounding cable acts as a near perfect antenna, thus defeating the purpose of the cage. The powerful signal makes into the box quite easily. As mentioned by someone else, welding a lug on the outside would eliminate this issue. However, most information I have read on Faraday cages from engineers do not recommend grounding the cage. You do not want the currents to flow thru the box to the ground, as this high energy current will induce currents inside the metal enclosure, defeating once again the cage. Another point is the choice of a grounding point. If a very powerful EMP hits, telluric (ground) currents are induced, so would work their way into the house thru water pipes and the grounding wire. Incidentally, solar flares do not produce the same type of EMPs as nukes, but rather create a very powerful ground current. So, your equipment could be damaged just by a flare, in peace time! An added point for improvement, the more layers the better. So, if the items going inside the box are small, like a small walky-talky or thumb drive. First wrap them in paper, then aluminum foil, then more paper, one more layer of aluminum foil and a final paper layer. This greatly increase the attenuation of any signal that might get into the box. Some numbers I have seen indicate that each layer could add an attenuation factor of 1,000. This level of protection is cheaply achieved with paper and aluminum foil. Still, any cage is better than none. One last point, most studies I have read indicate that an EMP nuke would be detonated over the center of the continental US. I you live anywhere near that area, think multiple layers! Cheers.

      would burying the cage help?

    • @jeanlui6944
      @jeanlui6944 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

Not likely as ground current would likely be present during powerful EMPs or even massive solar flares. Any cable or pipe that goes from the surface to the underground will carry part of the pulse there. One additional point to consider about the choice of metal for the Faraday cage, steel is the least recommended as it is not as conductive as say copper or aluminum. Do go silver or gold, best conductors, but insanely expensive. :o)

Can't recall off hand what the details are of an EMP, but I recon bugg-sized screening material should suffice. If you are swimming in money, go solid copper! As mentionned before, several factors will affect the damaged caused by an EMP nuke. Some are 'tuned' for maximum EMP effect. Another factor is the distance from the detonation. They will most likely occur 300 to 400 miles straight up above the center of the continental USA. The further away your are from that region the better.

Keep in mind that doing the grounding wire the way shown can also cause the RF part of an EMP pulse to radiate *into* the box. As you mentioned, grounding isn't strictly necessary. If you're going to ground, though, make sure the ground wire is attached to the *outside* of the box.

For an EMP etc. Do not ground a Faraday cage, you have actually just connected your box to a long conducter, the ground in your house goes to the neutral bus and then to the grid, the exact opposite of what you need. "For a "six sided shielding box" (faraday cage for equipment not in use).... "you need a very low inductance to ground. This is desirable for HEMP and IEMI. Ground rods have high inductance, and while necessary for lightning, are of limited help against high frequency transient phenomena". `DHS-CISA EMP protection and resilience guide, Version 2.2 - 5 February 2019 unclassified.` it also refences the various mil-spec standards.

Pretty informative a good example of a simple Faraday cage. Few points, 1. if you isolate the items in the box, you don't need to ground it. Also if you drill & tap a lug on the outside you can use it as a grounding point on the outside of the cage. If you want a air-tight sealed box, you can drill and tap a wire inside to the top cover & bottom box to connect the two pieces. Then you can keep the rubber seal in and just use aluminum tape or tin foil to ensure the cover overlaps with the box more for better protection. If your looking for storage... use an old metal office storage cabinet. Similarly, tap a cable to each drawer and provide some overlapping either aluminum tape and tin foil or other means to overlap the gaps of each drawer.

City Prepper, another thing you can do if on the move and can't ground cable to earth is dissipate the ESC to ground with a piece of metal like you would a capacitor. For those out there that don't know what I am talking about. You would take a piece of wire or metal and ground out the box before opening it by touching the metal to the box and a grounded item. This allows you to be on the go. Ideally is to have it grounded as City Prepper showed, BUT we don't live in an Ideal world. Great video. For the price that it would cost to build this box you can order already made Faraday Bags and other items that work. This is a great video and if you have a lot of Ammo cans then it is cost effective. Keep up the great work City Prepping!

I've seen recommendations to add electronics that provide a possibly critical survival edge, like thermal/NVGs, electronic sights (Holosun, Eotech, Aimpoint, etc), camera drones, security cameras, and so forth. If most people lose critical devices to EMP, these kinds of things can provide a real advantage when it comes to surviving the period of chaos that would accompany such an event. I'm sure that protecting some small fans, some kind of electric cooking appliance, solar panels and/or solar generator and so forth, would make life easier as well. Given the state of the world today, a Geiger counter might also be a good addition. Great video - thank you for making the excellent videos you regularly put out. As an electrical engineer, I would consider a few improvements. Consider connecting the ground to the box and the lid (connecting near the hinge so the box opens without any interference). You could leave the rubber gasket to preserve the waterproof rating of the box. Another good idea would be to add a diode at the box. The ground wire itself would conduct the energy from the EMP and the diode would restrict current from going “into” the box.
I’ve never tested anything in relation to an emp, but I’m not convinced grounding would accomplish anything. In fact I think it would create more opportunity for current to flow

Connect a terminal ring to the end of the ground wire. Then you you connect the terminal ring to the screw that holds the cover plate onto an electrical outlet. Assuming the outlet was installed to code and properly grounded this will give you a ground. That’s how you would properly ground an appliance with a three prong plug if you didn’t have a three prong grounded outlet. Those common adaptors were supposed to be connected to the plate screw.

I believe if grounding, it need a dedicated copper stake with a wire clamp bashed into soil outside, a meter deep. Grounding to pipe plumbing makes fatal touch for anyone touching a water faucet/tap/pipe. Each generator in Au supposed to be grounded with a copper stake. By the way, the sound-box you build for your generator, included some foil, if pieces connected, you have that box as a Faraday cage.. Also, the Faraday cage doesn't need to be a solid metal, using a metal/copper window insect screen, much better, more flexible, lighter.

I am thinking about reusing the rubber seal but wrapping it in copper foil before re-inserting it. I also like the idea about the external grounding lug rather than anything going to the inside of the Faraday Cage.

An alternative to the cardboard which will likely provide both better insulation as well as cushioning against drops and bumps to protect your gear is an inexpensive yoga mat. If very thin, you may even double the bottom for add'l impact protection.

Take a closet reline it with lead lines drywall which is easy to aquire. Run #6 bare copper around the room in a couple areas down to 4 ground rods in 4 corners. This can be welded to ground rods or mechanically held. Remember to cover floor and inside of door. Then you can have a ton for room for devices. Same way they do xrays, ct, cat scan, etc rooms!!!!!

One more thing. there are different ground potentials depending on what you ground the Faraday Cage to. The target is to keep the EMP from passing thru it and even a water pipe would have an EMP flow to ground. I am thinking having an independent grounding rod with a short cable to the Faraday Cage would be optimum. I have a friend who knows more than I do and need to ask him his thoughts. He and I could argue the potentials of whether to or not to ground and if to ground, how to best ground the Faraday Cage.

My suggestions for a more effective cage that I implement myself.
-Coat the inside with rubber, 2-4 coats of using spray on (other than where metal to metal contact is needed for the lid)
-Fabricate a thin lead insert w/top that will fit inside and apply rubber coat as with can.
-Weld or solder ground connection on outside of can
    -Store on a rubber mat

Kris, enjoyed this video. One suggestion... When you do the testing with the radio in the can, i noticed you didnt have the grounding cable going under the lid. I am curious to see if that cable has any gaps when placed under the lid and closed. thanks! - Dan W4WWF

Great video! My suggestion is to actually have a small Faraday box with the very minimum necessary for communication (radio as cellphone towers may be dead) after a first EMP/CME. If it's a EMP, chances are that subsequent attacks may follow and if you have only one Faraday box with all your electronics, you may risk to have them fried in a 2nd, 3rd EMP.
Don't carry all your electronic stuff in a single basket.

Could the box be made portable if the grounding wire were made with a wall plug that had the two “power” wire ends clipped off so it only connects to the ground?

Putting a ground wire under the lid like that seems like you are giving a path for the emp into the box.

Hey T_funks comment was great and you should really look at his advice as a electrical engineer. I am an Electrician and He is correct on all terms leaving in the rubber gasket. He is also right about the ground wire, Diode is a great Idea and the ground is not necessary however if you do it you cannot allow it to go into the box the way it is here. I would worry that particularly with the way you have it coiled you would great a massive induced voltage or amperage and then the poor connection to the aluminium foil would create a massive arc or possibly a capacitance if the arc blew the line. If you did it, then weld or bolt or clamp it to the exterior or you may need to bother with protecting the valuables as they may simply blow up instead.

like everything for a month's wait. radios batteries, walkie talkies , testing equip, vom, . and a few bucks, metal ones, agony dollars.
simple but helpful. BURY THE THING, put foil all around it, sorta self grounding. simple.

Nice video, I have for years said to ground Your faraday box’s, the card board is good but I think truck bed liner could be better. Now for seals if you think aluminum foil is good how about copper window screen from Mc Master-Carr rolled in to a tube you shouldn’t need much. Last I like to have a ground strap connecting the lid to the body of the can also I like to use terminals to connect ground wire can.

Great video, and good tip about the rubber gasket. I purchased a 4'x2'x3' tool chest from Amazon ($145) there I store my radios, cellphone, extra car battery, solar panel, etc. I guess my question is this. I have a GoalZero Yeti 500X and I leave it in my faraday cage, but over time the battery depletes itself over time of not being in use. Can I cut a hole within the faraday to run a charging cable to charge the battery pack? Or will that just compromise the faraday cage itself? Thanks.
