I think it’s a bit of an unfair comparison with the different tone knob settings Some people getting started with bass may not know what a tone knob is, so they may just assume that those two basses can only get those sounds
Would reccomend someone who is just getting started on bass to not base their decision on a 30 second video, get themselves down to a store and try out as many as possible :) Thanks for your feedback! - Sam
Now what's the difference between a rock bass and a jazz bass? A rock bass plays 4 notes to a thousand people A jazz bass plays a thousand notes to 4 people.
I'm at the point where every bass I pick up I end up messing with the tone knobs and dialing in the same tone I always use. Tone truly is in the fingers for the most part.
I always wonder why producers choose pbass more often than J. I belive it is because the "bass profile" from a P is less jumpy due to the offset neck pickup. Thats why I play a pj, cause you get the nice brightness from the bridge J, with the added bass stability from the P.
One of the primary reasons is that j basses typically have single coil pickups and p basses have split coil. This makes j basses have a bunch of hum between notes, whereas o basses are relatively silent. Other than that, if the pickups are in a similar location they can sound extremely similar. Oh, one is usually a few millimeters wider on the neck than the other as well, but I can't remember which at the moment.
Closer to the bridge pickup gives you the more pointed, edgier sound, right? I’m a sax player, but I’ve been watching and listening to bass players for a long while.
That was not a fair comparison, the J was using the bridge pickup and open tone while the P was using (as it couldn't be different) the middle/neck (whatever you prefer to call it) pickup and closed tone
Slight issue comes from the fact that you can make a jazz bass sound like a pbass. But you can’t do it the other way around. If you have a PJ, even better.
Let’s say 1 pickup basses have 3 sounds: tone off, tone 50% and tone 100%. That means the Jazz Bass has 9 sounds, but even 10+ minute comparisons still reduce it to HONK, they just call it ‘the Jaco sound’.
I can't stand people that dial out the neck pickup on the Jazz. I don't know why people feel the need to do it. It literally removes all the bass frequency
(From a guitar player, who plays bass on the side's perspective) Jazz bass is if you took the bright tones of a fender stratocaster and put it on to a bass, and the P bass has the more creamy tones of a Les Paul or a ES-335 and put it on a bass.
@@HickiesMusicStore Well yeah of course you saw my Mom. She was very happy to meet you and thought you were a friend and had no idea you were sucking me off. Also who is Ollie?
The precision sounds like its tone knob is way down. The jazz sounds like it's neck pickup is off. I still totally appreciate this video, just saying there's more to the story.
I have a J and a P. They’re both right for that specific sound and gig. I prefer the mid thump of the P. You can always EQ out a bit of the mid in a My influence is James Jamerson, soul and blues.
I like the sound of both, but every time I see a bass, I always want to try and match the tone/sound of Peter Steele (lead singer and bassist of the band Type O Negative)
I had to mime this out in public to think about it. And if i'm honest I don't think there's a single right answer, other than it depends on what's coming next. For example, if you're going to rake down the strings, start with your index finger. :) Cheers, Ollie
The Pbass does not have the versatility of the Jazz bass. With adjustments you can make the Jazz sound like a pbass, but you can’t get a pbass to sound like the Jazz bass.
Gente, é possível tirar um timbre mais grave do jazz bass e um mais agudo no P Bass. Nesse vídeo aí ele puxou o jazz muito pro agudo e o P Bass muito pro grave. 👍
My jazz sounds just fine, not honky. My P with rounds sounds great, my P with flats sounds great. I can use any of them. It's all in the palm and fingers.
I have a Squier 5 string that says Precision on the headstock, but has jazz pickups. What's the deal with this? Anybody know? I got it new from a shop, so it's not like someone swapped the neck.
The jazz bass sounds funky and the P Bass sounds jazzy
That’s what I was thinking
Ironic
Same company who made a guitar called jazzmaster and it's mostly used got grunge and punk...I guess.
So what bass do I need to play Acid jazz (jazz funk) then?
@@Lordoftheswollen *Iconic
You forgot to turn the tone up on the p bass maybe
Yeah that’s a pretty poor representation of a P-Bass’ tone. It can growl pretty good too
p bass sounds better with tone rolled off imo
Yea sounds almost like flatwounds
@@tr3ndkiller jazz bass goes honk and the p bass goes growl

@@HickiesMusicStore Yeah but the comparison is literally the whole part of this short, so why not compare them fairly?
@@fr3ak1shh We'll have to treat you to a full length video at some point! Good shout! Cheers! - Sam
totally agree thank-you this video is pointless
Especially since on the jazz bass they have the neck pickup turned down!
Now what's the difference between a rock bass and a jazz bass?
A rock bass plays 4 notes to a thousand people
A jazz bass plays a thousand notes to 4 people.
HAH. Don't I know it. :'(
Nice😂
No
damn that's fucked up bro
explain Geddy Lee then
Think it's fair to say the two of them are so versatile they can't be covered in a short.
So relax guys, it's just two of the many famous tonalities
^PROTECT THIS MAN AT ALL COSTS.
Just dropping by from my bands page to say that this is the best comment on this video
The way you managed to get beautiful tones from both has me 😍
Thanks so much, I'll be sure to let ollie know, he'll be flattered. - Sam
I'm at the point where every bass I pick up I end up messing with the tone knobs and dialing in the same tone I always use. Tone truly is in the fingers for the most part.
Hard agree! - Sam
Agree. So what is the tone you go for?
I'm surprised more people don't go for a PJ setup. Best of both worlds, man!
Is it really? I have an Ibanez at the moment so not sure.
pretty much a p bass
Sounds like the adjustment of the tone knob.
One of the many cool sounds you can get out of both basses 😉 Cheers! - Sam
J bass is just so funky
Too right!!
Love them both. Tone rolled off or on, flats or wounds, still two awesome basses.
I love how you making those noises perfectly describes the sounds of both instruments 😂
The Precision bass is unmatched!🤘🏻✨
I always wonder why producers choose pbass more often than J. I belive it is because the "bass profile" from a P is less jumpy due to the offset neck pickup. Thats why I play a pj, cause you get the nice brightness from the bridge J, with the added bass stability from the P.
Yeah that bridge pickup is essential for ANYTHING jaco right!?
One of the primary reasons is that j basses typically have single coil pickups and p basses have split coil. This makes j basses have a bunch of hum between notes, whereas o basses are relatively silent.
Other than that, if the pickups are in a similar location they can sound extremely similar. Oh, one is usually a few millimeters wider on the neck than the other as well, but I can't remember which at the moment.
Plus humbuckers have more output which is great mixing wise
Big part of the difference here is also the position of the right hand.
Very true Patrick! makes a world of difference! - Sam
Closer to the bridge pickup gives you the more pointed, edgier sound, right? I’m a sax player, but I’ve been watching and listening to bass players for a long while.
You’ve cut the high frequencies on the second one.
Jazz Base sounds like somebody farting under water
Thankyou sam for your very detailed and interesting Feedback! Hope you are having a great day where you are - Sam
@@HickiesMusicStore Hilarious 😂
bass*
Do you realize how immature you sound
And I guess a p bass is like 💨 farting in you’re jeans
My favorite sound is a only neck pick up and like 9 on the tone knob, then play it almost over fret board....it's like a the best of a p and j
Man this is great i subbed
P bass with flatwound strings and a foam mute at the bridge is what I call The Bass. Fits with nearly all genres and styles.
I’ve got a jazz bass and I’ve used it for 54years it’s an amazing bass gorgeous sound I just love fender guitars the best.🎸
P bass goes Bum Bum and J bass goes Bem Bem
Thats some fun sounding feedback matt! Cheers for this - Sam
Having played both for years and in many types of venues I'd say the best sounding is The EBMM Stingray.
Jazz bass with both pickups is absolute peak
That was not a fair comparison, the J was using the bridge pickup and open tone while the P was using (as it couldn't be different) the middle/neck (whatever you prefer to call it) pickup and closed tone
That's why my favorite pickup combo on bass is P/J, and with a blend knob. You get both options.
They both sound fantastic
The jazz bass tone sampled is a horrible representation of a sliver of a sound that the jazz bass can deliver
The tone on a jazz bass is quite versatile but a pbass can be too. Love em both. They say tone is mostly in the fingers
Both great basses! Thank so much for this - Sam
Would be nice to try flats on a jazz, there are some sweet tones on yt.
Yeah great shout Diego, I've never actually tried a jazz with flats.
Yeah I love my jazz with flats
Jazz with flats is actually better than P with flats (assuming youre not going for 50s 60s vibes)
That's the Reggae tone! Jazz Bass with flats is just a classic!
I'm going to have to look up what you're talking about as I am clueless ... this is all new to me
Honk vs thump. PERFECT 💯
So glad you liked it! Cheers!
Jazz bass sounds very goofy, and i like it.
Slight issue comes from the fact that you can make a jazz bass sound like a pbass. But you can’t do it the other way around. If you have a PJ, even better.

You're exactly right, might have to do a longer video on this topic. Great idea. :)
Great instruments with different tone fields.
That p bass has a beautiful appearance and tone for only being 389GBP. I want it for that price. Is it really a squier?
Great straightforward comparison for starters! Although it would have been better IMO if the P’s tone was set to around 5-7 😊
yeah fair shout Paolo! I've been beasting a p-bass with flats and have been hooked on the deadest tone haha.
I can't stand people that dial out the neck pickup on the Jazz. I don't know why people feel the need to do it. It literally removes all the bass frequency
I'm pretty sure you can get close to that sound with the j bass
(From a guitar player, who plays bass on the side's perspective) Jazz bass is if you took the bright tones of a fender stratocaster and put it on to a bass, and the P bass has the more creamy tones of a Les Paul or a ES-335 and put it on a bass.
Dude... I met this guy on grindr months ago. Weird to see him making videos on youtube after he blew me.
Yeah that's right! About a week after I saw your mum wasn't it? :) Cheers, Ollie
@@HickiesMusicStore Well yeah of course you saw my Mom. She was very happy to meet you and thought you were a friend and had no idea you were sucking me off. Also who is Ollie?
Thanks for reminding me why any other bass has more character and life than a pbass.
Get a PJ bass.
So a P-bass with a Jazz rear single coil.
Now use both pickups, and dial the front P-pickup back just a slight amount. You’ll hear it.
Great shout. :) I love the Mustang basses with that configuration! Cheers, Ollie
I’ve found that on a jazz bass if you turn the neck pickup to 90%, the bridge pickup to 0, and roll the tone off it sounds like a P bass.
yeah great idea!! next best thing for sure.
No, it doesn't
That’s how you get the reggae sound ;)
What’s best for playing funk music?
Only if you play the jazz bass on the bridge pickup......
The solo bridge pup is NOT why I bought a jazz. The reason I have one is both pickups.
What about the Fender Precision Jazz?
Tone is really dialled back on the precision. It's a lot more versatile than you hearing here.
Hi David! Heres a squier precision doing its best to be dynamic for you
th-cam.com/video/837ZvArxZ4M/w-d-xo.html
That sounds so nice fr bro
Maybe if you didn't turn the treble all the way down on the P-Bass it would honk vs thump?
I'm going to have to revisit this aren't I? Cheers, Ollie
The precision sounds like its tone knob is way down. The jazz sounds like it's neck pickup is off. I still totally appreciate this video, just saying there's more to the story.

Played in different locations relative to the bridge, so hard to say. Of course it will sound brighter nearer to the bridge.
The Jazz Bass is brighter because he has the tone rolled way off in the P-Bass segment.
put a treble booster and a fuzz on that thing
yeaaah great shout dude!
You can turn the tone knob one way or the other to get both of those sounds.
Have a 1974 Jazz bass...
Had a 1977 Precision bass.
How was the P-bass? Am quite the admirer of vintage basses! - Sam
I learned today that Jazz bass sounds "honk!"
Do you start off using middle finger or 1st finger ? What is best? (Without a pick)
I had to mime this out in public to think about it. And if i'm honest I don't think there's a single right answer, other than it depends on what's coming next. For example, if you're going to rake down the strings, start with your index finger. :) Cheers, Ollie
Flats on a p bass isn't my favorite tone but rounds on a p bass is very charming
You can get the best of both worlds: PJ with jazz neck
I m drawn to PBass tones, probably because I Like James Jamerson
If you believe this Dude...your crazy...It all depends on how the bass & Amp settings are adjusted.
Listening to that P bass I don't know why people crap on Squire it sounded great
I have one bass so far, a PJ with a malfunctioning J pickup. This video was instrumental in convincing me to get that J fixed.
That p bass sound is a drug
The only perscription...is more p bass.
I like P bass and change the treble on the amp, but Jazz Bass is awesome too! But i prefer the simplicity. Minimalism hahaha
What's the difference between a PJ bass?
Both pickup styles in the same instrument! A good choice for versatility!
EQ played a fair role in this to be honest...
What are the settings on the amp and the jazz bass? I want that sound
Thanks for this, I would have asked Ollie, but he is no longer with the shop anymore, and off to the fire and rescue service! Cheers - Sam
So funny…this is all the explanation you need
The Pbass does not have the versatility of the Jazz bass. With adjustments you can make the Jazz sound like a pbass, but you can’t get a pbass to sound like the Jazz bass.
Thank God!
The jazz goes thwonk and the precision goes bwomp
I think of if as the Duck Bass and the Goose Bass
quack and honk Cheers, Ollie
Ehh, Jazz bass can have a super nice growl with a couple knob turns. I'm sure you already knew that but still
Justice for Jazz bass!
We've just got an original 80's ricky 4001. Thats the growliest bass i've ever seen! :D Cheers, Ollie
You definitely messed with the tone controls lol
Tbh the difference sounds more like an EQ thing if anything.
what should i get a hambucker or a jazz bass to get the sound like joe dart
tbh, really informative
You can make either of those sound those ways
I want to hear a pj now
Theres an idea for a new video! Cheers! - Sam
you can make either sound like either
Man can i get the tabs for this riff pls
Having owned both, I MUCH prefer the sound and feel of a P Bass.
John Paul Jones and Geddy Lee play basses that go Hoonnkkkk$$$$$.
Jazz bass is proof anything can sound good with proper marketing behind it.
Will 90% of the time prefer the Jazz bass. Just far more versatile.
I love the p bass sound.
Thanks so much Natasha! Really glad you enjoyed the sound of it! :) Stay awesome - Sam
Gente, é possível tirar um timbre mais grave do jazz bass e um mais agudo no P Bass. Nesse vídeo aí ele puxou o jazz muito pro agudo e o P Bass muito pro grave. 👍
Is the tone rolled down on the P bass?
Now I gotta pick up my bass to see what it is
Always an excuse to play some bass! Cheers :)
My jazz sounds just fine, not honky. My P with rounds sounds great, my P with flats sounds great. I can use any of them. It's all in the palm and fingers.
both are great, but have a jazz 5 rn
My fav is a PJ Bass❤
I got a p bass with jazz neck. Its a beauty
gotta play the p bass to the right of the pickups to get the best sound
Most scientific video I found on this topic
I have a Squier 5 string that says Precision on the headstock, but has jazz pickups. What's the deal with this? Anybody know? I got it new from a shop, so it's not like someone swapped the neck.
