- We ran a test to see if our generator would run our house AND central air. Did it work? Check out the video!

We have a four-year-old 3-ton Trane. I'm having the 30amp interlock set up installed tomorrow. It's the lowest cost and simplest way to connect your generator to the house IMO. I'm using a 13,500/8,000 watt generator for the juice as back-up/emergency power. I'm also having a soft start installed on the AC unit which appears to reduce start-up wattage around 70% or more. This way, I don't have to worry about the power surge from the AC start-up. For $200 installed, I honestly don't understand why anyone wouldn't want a soft start on their AC. It's easier on the compressor and reduces electricity usage. From the people I've spoken with and the videos I've seen, all I see are pros and no cons.
What size is your AC? Amps? Tons? BTUs? Thx.
Great video, but I have the same question as some of the others. How many tons is the AC unit? You can usually find out by looking at the model number.
We ran our entire house on an 8750 watt Predator for 12 days after hurricane Laura back in 2020. 3 ton central ac, washer/dryer, fridge, freezer, electric stove, radio, television, egg beater, disco ball-that generator never checked up.
Did you have to ground the generator? I have the 8750 generator inverter and want it for a home backup
Got the same one, she runs the AC compressor, and can even handle the well pump along with lights. Great generator for the price.
Love this generator!
Nice helpful video. Thank you for sharing.
Do you think adding a soft start module to your A/C outdoor unit would be helpful? I heard it stops that huge draw when first kicking on.
We have a predator 8750 and it runs like a champ.
You said your hot water tank “put a hurting” on the generator. What kind of hot water tank do you have? Great videos, by the way.
Maybe the water heater and a/c were running at the same time why it put a hurting on generator.
Electric tankless from the sounds of it.
The most useful information is to tell your viewers the size of your air conditioner. How many tons is it? a 3.5 ton AC requires a 12.25KW genset because of the initial start load.
Get a Micro Air Soft Start kit and you can easily operate on this unit.
@@freebehindbars8654if I install a soft start on my 3.5 ton AC unit, will a 1000W generator be big enough to run it?
@@lonnyharris6464 I seriously doubt that!! You will need something bigger than that. 1000w Gen is good for a 5000btu window unit
@@lonnyharris64641 thousand absolutely not. That will barely run a coffee machine
Did you have to add a softstart on your AC unit?
How many ton ac unit is it
Also, how many ton is your air conditioner unit? Thanks.
This is my question as well. You hear it bog down when it starts but then it seems fine, so I'm curious as to the tonnage of the unit. Would be nice to know the start/running wattage as well.
Use a micro air soft start
What size dedicated breaker did you use in your panel box to run the generator?
Can you show me how you did that why that's connected to the generator with that special tension cord please
Can you show me how you put the wire to the plug in the oanel
In case of an emergency, how long would you say can the generator safely be ran continuous? By the way great video!
You can run it as long as needed. A tank of gas will run for approximately 12 hours straight as long as it is not running at max output.
@@TheCookFamilyHomestead thank you so much really appreciate the info and mostly the response.

I have a similar power Champion generator and when i turned on the 30A AC breaker i started feeling air inside the house. The issue I’m seeing is that 3 hours later and the house has not dropped a single degree. Is this normal? Is there a second breaker for the Freon or something?
Fans are on but Your compressor is probably not coming on.
How long did a tank of fuel last?
How long does it run on a full tank?
It depends on the load. To give you a point of reference, at 50% load, 3625 continuous running watts, you will get 13 hrs. run time on a full tank of gas. (8 gal.)
So… you ran a generator test on a a/c IN A COLD OCTOBER MONTH? What the heck can go wrong? August, son! 😂
I bought all the stuff but haven't hooked it up yet. What breaker switch is that with the galvanized thing over the main shutoff?
It's called an interlock switch. It won't allow both to be on at the same time. I put a link in the description. Thanks for watching!
Do you have elc heat or gas.
Do I have to add a "soft start?" I have the same generator.
I would. I have a 9000 watt predator and a 3.5 ton. My AC and lights and all the light wattage stuff runs easy.
Wouldn’t start my AC before the soft start. Now it does
But what if you run out of fuel? And how can you possibly store in a fuel for a long period of time? These are all questions I have no clue how to solve so I'm hoping you do
Best option is get the propane kit for this generator or a duel / tri fuel generator and keep propane stocked. Propane will store indefinitely.
A full tank runs for 12 hours. Buy another 5 gallon gas can if you’d like.
@@kevinanselm6104 well exactly my point.
Actually, 13 hrs. with a full tank of gas at 50% load. Which means you can run this generator at a continuous load of 3625 watts for 13 hrs.
@@Pk3_Garage not even a day
You've said ZERO about A/C hook-up
Kids+mess=memorys
overkill thats gonna kill you in gas
