    You have a third option which works best, the ultrasonic leak detector. The brand I use is accutrak. What makes this better then the other two? You don't have to have refrigerant in the system to find the leak. You can find the leak with little to no refrigerant or nitro in the system. It would behoove you to investigate and master this tool as it will save you tons of $$$$ and are extremely accurate.

      Understood on that, but not many people have 800 to spend on those. They're really expensive....If you're a supertect, then ya it would be for you and one could probly afford it easier

      Yep had mine for ten years.. extremely sensitive. Had a mini split leaking from a flare joint inside, and I initially started my leak search outside, and I was getting a hit outside just from the residual refrigerant traveling between the armaflex and line set.

    Both units have pros and cons, so I guess that we have to “weigh” those differences and make our decision. To make the decision process easier, remember these words of wisdom:

      Unfortunately from my experience refrigerant leak detectors are always a gamble no mater how much or how little money you spend. I've seen some really expensive leak detectors break and become unreliable within 6 months under light use. It can be frustrating.

    Now I wish I wouldn’t have bought the D-Tek 3 although it’s a great leak detector. Only thing I don’t like about it is the power button. It can be a pain to turn on but I’ve found a lot of leaks with it. Probably would’ve bought the Fieldpiece infrared though because I love Fieldpiece products. I got the wireless probes, the new SC480 meter, and the 380v manifold and I love them all. I gotta quit spending so much money on tools it’s an addiction

    I have a DR82 and the one gripe I have is the USB-C charge port is kinda janky. The connection is not very secure so it's very easy to accidentally become disconnected. This is frustrating when you're searching for a leak and you have plugged in at the same time.

  • @Jut1911

    I have an AC unit and I’m just wondering if a leak detector like this would actually detect a leak by putting it near the unit as well? Rather than finding the actual leak spot deep down? More like a safety measure

    If the infared is like previous models, the operation will be different than the heated diode. You must sweep with the infared as it will zero out if you hover over a leak.

    • @davidlopan6649
      @davidlopan6649 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So infrared doesn't have some sort of fan to move the air but the diode does?

    • @keithsac2542
      @keithsac2542 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ver151set Infared doesn't zero out every couple seconds. It works by sensing differences in ambient conditions. If you hover over a leak , it sees no change.

    • @keithsac2542
      @keithsac2542 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ver151set The point was you can hold a heated diode by a leak without moving and it will alarm continuously. The infared
