Some people dont care. My parents bought a BMW 318ci e46 convertible back in 2002, they didn't know any better, it was dog slow with NA 143hp. They just cared about leather interior, white turn signals and the rear seat space which was better than Audi and Mercedes. Also they thought the Audi looked to bland and the Mercedes was too ghetto. Anything under 10 seconds 0-100 is enough being realistic.

I also used to own a 318ci, but in the manual coupe flavour, it was a great first bmw and rwd car, but after getting used to it, it definitely felt slow
complete bullshit. various components differ between these engines. you can try to chiptune this stock engine to 250hp and tell me how long it lasts 😅 higher power ones are more robustly built. most importantly the alloy of the cylinders and combustion chamber and attachments differ a lot. I dont defend BMW for their strategies, they could easily build better lasting cars but they wouldnt profit as much as they do. its just sad overall but almost any manufacturer is like this nowadays

Especially, in eu countries where there are very high taxes on bigger engines, these cars are very popular. Also, regarding fuel economy, you could spec 18d and 18i’s in some countries with 17 or even 16 inch wheels for even better emissions and better economy
as an owner of the 2024 M2 this car is still lovely to daily drive hahaha! but yeah low on power for sure. the m2 in coparison is a off the leash pit bull, just wants to go mad. crazy that the 218i is still so fun to drive.

It's not the weight it's the engine stress, I have driven a courtesy car that had a 1.6 naturally aspirated (mg3 hatchback) and when driven hard it gets 32mpg, my bmw stage 2 n55 has 28mpg. The mg weighs only 1100kg vs 1500kg on bmw

In most cars it has an automated braking assistance and it accelerates very quick. I like to let the car roll for longer and then accelerate just a bit

One of the most fuel efficient cars I have ever driven at the speeds I go on motorway 110 to 120km/h was a 1990s Ford Scorpio 2,9L V6 with 150hp. You just put it in 5 gear and never had to change gear after that if you did drive faster then 50km/h and at higher speed it had unbeatable fuel economy.

You can drift every car with rear wheel drive,if the surface is wet. Only need to brake hard,and have your engine idle,on the clutch. Turn in hard,leave the clutch,and the fun can start.

Theres no point buying a 220i at this point. Higher insurance and much higher price to be paid upon purchase. Buy a 218 stage1 tune it to 260hp for 500bucks. This is the beauty of bmw they make very few engines so you can get the same power from a weaker model as u can from stronger ones.
What type of differential does this spec of 218i comes with? a lot of the drifting relies on the dif and not so much on power especially if you want to maintain a longer drift since something like OPEN dif will ruin the drift
It has 230 ft lb of torque, which is more necessary to drift. 230 is a lot, more than many bmws. This being the "slowest bmw" has little to do with its ability to drift

If you really don't even have budget to either get a more fun engine or spec the car with nicer options/M sport then I'd advise to spend the money on a young second hand premium selection BMW that's better specced up. The new price of this is probably the same as an OG M2 N55 sold @ bmw premium selection. Ofcourse many countries have high emission taxes and some people wouldn't want to pay them so opt for a more eco friendly engine like this. Understandable.
@@solidfuel0 If you adjust the ignition to take advantage you get 5 to 10% better fuel economy running 98 octane over 95 octane. I did it on my 1993 1,6l Opel Astra where you reversed a plug that had 95 octane printed on it, when you reversed it it said 98 octane. I got 10km/h higher top speed and around 5% better fuel economy making it cost pretty much the same as running 95 octane so I only did run it on 98 until they stopped selling 98 octane here in Norway... (now 95 and lower is only petrol you get here unless you can run E85 that is much higher octane).
prob because the models with longitudinal only get the b48 (4cyl) since the b38 (3cyl) is only meant for the transverse layout cars like the 1 series, 2 gran coupe or x1/x2. 316i/318i also have the 4 cylinder.

The engine of 18i and 20i is a B48A engine. The 30i has a B48B engine, which is stronger and can handle 300+ hp. The A engine is limited to 260hp

Bmw 4cyl so underrated, even at old n13b16 you can tune from 130 to 200hp at stage 1
It's not as reliable as the B48 though
A friend of mine owns a 2017 F20 with B48. Stage 1 got him from 170hp to 316hp. Yes, Bmw 4 cylinders are something else
