    Today we are looking at the Tobii Eye Tracker 5 and how it can enhance your experience in Star Citizen. Tobii reached out and I was very excited to finally give the Tobii Eye Tracker 5 a go in Star Citizen. As many of you know I have previously used the TrackIR system, and through testing the Tobii Eye Tracker i'd gain a lot of insights on comparing the two!

    I love my Tobii, you are absolutely right about spending time getting used to it. For me, finding the right combination and calibration of head movement to eye movement sensitivity was a bit of a trick. Especially if I have snacks nearby the computer. As my eyes search for the the crisps or my drink, I sometimes found myself in some harrowing experiences. Now, I dont think I could play without it.

    • @Citizen_Kate

      Just before I was sent the Tobii Eye Tracker, my old TrackIR stopped working during a windows update - and yes - playing without some kind of headtracking now just feels incomplete :D
      I am still finding the right level of headtracking to eye tracking with the Tobii, but its so easy to make the adjustments that even now it feels completely natural to use already :)

      Love my Tobii but tbh I’ve largely disabled the eye tracking settings and just go for head tracking. I found my eyes wandered and it exaggerated movement too much. I used Trackir 5 before but hated that I had to wear the gear. It was just a great feeling of freedom when I started to use the Tobii. I only use the Tobii for inside vehicles though and prefer the mouse for on foot. Being able to disable it with a keystroke is very handy too should I need to.

      @@Citizen_Kate I use mine for headtracking almost entirely now. The missile lock was a cool thing, but having to look at the locked target constantly made it more of a headache than it was worth. So you can use it for eye tracking on bigger screens. You need to move the tobii closer to you on a mount so a box or stand work well. I have an odyssey ark so had to figure a way to make it work on a monitor that is bigger than 32". So my tobii is about 9 inches away from the screen towards me that brings it just under the monitor visually. Tracks everything perfectly if I want it to now.

    I've had a Tobii since release but haven't used it much admittedly. I really really should as I have neck issues and the eye tracking works amazing. I just need to use it and figure out how to make it work best for me. My one grip with it is the flashing LED's on it. I have sensitive eyes and can see the red flashing glow. So I disable it when not using it. I WISH it would have an option to be able to enable it when I went into SC and then disable when I leave it. Since I'm in SC before I remember to turn it on. ♥ But a great, fair, view of the device. It truly is a wonder of tech. And your right, it's super well made and dead easy to configure to your monitor.

    Nice video! I've been using Tobii for a couple of years now. I previously used TrackIR which was good, but Tobii is next level. Not having to wear something on your head or attached to your headset for TrackIR took some getting used to but once Tobii came out boasting not having to have any additional equipment to be attached to the user, is what sold me to give it a try.
    Just know that if you get Tobii, you will have to personally tweak it to your own individual comfort levels. Everyone is different and will need to tune Tobii to what you want and expect when looking around. For example, I needed to turn the eye-tracking down to around 20-40% because the movement was just too fast. If you think about how fast your eyes move around versus your head, you will understand how hard it can be trying to focus on an object such as a push button in the game on your MFD. Point I'm trying to make here is to just tune the Tobii to your comfort levels like Kate mentioned in this video.
    Also, remember in the SC options for head-tracking devices you can have the tracking to turn off automatically. For example, I have it turn off when I open my MobiGlass and sometimes in FPS while on foot. Personal preferences of mine.

    That aside I loved the combat part of the video, you make SC look like great fun - 5 ⭐'s

    For me it was the other way around. I used to use Tobii, but since i started playing SC, ETS2, MSFS 2020 and flying the Apache using the chaingun in DCS, I needed something else bc Tobii isn't that exact and trying to focus on a specific in game display, trying to make a text entry or typing in coordinates (sorry to say,) it went all to shit with Tobii. In my case I ordered the TrackIR with Pro clip and bam, problem solved.

    I also like Tobii in FPS but I turn the centralisation setting up a bit whilst in FPS to help with hip fire.
    And I also disable tracking when ADS.
    I would add that the T1000’s will eventually break on you (I know someone who has used them for years but he’s repaired them a few times) so if you’re serious about flight games in general then go for VKB, the Gladiotor EVO’s for a more mid priced setup or the Gunfighter’s for the ultimate.
    I have a VKB Gunfighter for my right stick and it has a customisable softer smooth centre with metal cams unlike the Gladiators which have a more hard centre with plastic cams. But the price difference is pretty huge so

    Have you tried head tracking with only a webcam and FOIP? I connected an iPhone 6s to elgato's camera software, enabled FOIP, but found the response rate of FOIP's head tracking to be rather slow. I didn't mind the de-synchronizations, but I did mind the 1 second input delay between moving my head and the camera rotating.

    I have a couple questions. Do you have to mount it on the bottom of the monitor and how does it mount to a curved monitor?

  • @NL0Gwenster
    @NL0Gwenster ปีที่แล้ว

    Can I ask what size your monitor is? You mention in the video you've had a screen bigger than their requirements. I've looked at Tobii a year ago myself. But the 30 inch max requirement for 21:9 screens (or 27 inch for 16:9) was always a thing, since i`m using a 34 inch 21:9 - i was actually kind of waiting for Tobii to release an updated version of the hardware to support larger screens cause ultra-wides are so commonplace now, especially if you want immersion (which players playing SC types of games do) - but so far no updated version and I might just get this right now.
    I do miss head tracking, had a DIY tracker back in the ED days that just worked flawlessly. But it's gonna be nice not having anything strapped to your head for a change :)
    I have tried the webcam based tracking on SC which is built in, i have a 60 FPS capable webcam. It works decently enough in a pinch, but the software is buggy and sometimes it just fails to "boot up" when you start SC.

The feeling of freedom when I just hop into a supported game with no hassle just can’t be beat for me. Great review, Katie. I was sold on it and was about to order it until I saw the price. I like the additional eye tracking but from what I saw it’s twice the price of TrackIR. Compared to TrackIR do you think the higher price tag is worth it with the features Tobii offers?

    • @Citizen_Kate
      @Citizen_Kate  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In my opinion yes the price is worth it - I mean this was a sponsored video so there will be a little bias but let me tell you what happened with TrackIR for me:
      The software they use is not updated regularly at all. You only need to take a look at their release versions to see this. And when there is a problem wtth TrackIR it usually just crashes or fails to launch.
      Following a windows update TrackIR just stopped working. I tried everything to get it working again, rolling back windows update, rolling back GPU drivers, reinstalling the software, complete wipe of all drivers and reinstalling . nothing would let the program launch successfully.
      about a week later It cam back up. But that was a week where it just wouldn't have been an option for me to use it. This wasn't the first time i'd had this kind of problem either. Obviously with what I do this kind of interruption was unacceptable for me reliability wise - though normal gamers would maybe not consider it as bad of an issue
      The build quality of the actual devices is a world apart too - i mentioned it in the video because the trackIR components are made of the cheapest feeling plastics. I feel like Tobii are more invested in delivering an end user experience where TrackIR is just about delivering a peripheral. I'm not even sure how invested NaturalPoint (TrackIR developer) is in maintaining the market for the trackIr anymore tbh. their forums are super old at this point. It costs more upfront for the Tobii yes - but if they are gonna be around to support you in future it seems like a smarter investment :)

    A thing about high eye sensitivity is that when I glance anywhere off screen - like.. 'wheres the right button dangit!' .. - I look back at the screen and have to reorient.

    Personally, I had to turn off eyetracking in SC. Sadly. The combination of wearing glasses and sitting too far away from the monitor it's mounted on doesn't lend itself to precision eyetracking. Still works well for headtracking though.
    Edit: to remove latency, I did need to tweak a few settings for tobii.

      ooh yeah I should have mentioned in the video that I am sitting about 40cm from the screen - For me with my glasses the eye tracking works well, but I can totally see how different distances could affect that - thanks for pointing this out. For head tracking though you are absolutely right - totally solid :)

      @@Citizen_Kate for sure. I would argue that eye tracking in ships especially is necessary. I bet two pilots of equal skill, the one with tracking would win.

    • @Citizen_Kate
      @Citizen_Kate  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I found that eye tracking was so much easier to use for looking at MFDs than head tracking alone. I am still playing around with the balance between head tracking and eye tracking but I can see how you would be right because Eye tracking is much easier to use quickly!

      @@Citizen_Kate Not to mention your ability to visually look up, left and right to visually identify targets and track their movement. This is even more important for a turret gunner.
      Also formation flying. Being able to visually keep track of your wingman is a bit easier than just guessing.

    mmh, I use a combination of my phone with droidcam (using a USB connection) as webcam, AITracker running on my computer and opentrack. It is lagging a bit but everything is openscource or has a free version (droidcam), so it doesn't cost anything. Instead of the open source AITrack one can use smoothTrack, it is an app for the phone instead and thus doesn't hog any resources of the PC, but costs a small fee. Theoretically SC works with a webcam/droidcam alone, but I couldn't get it to work. AITrack is a bit slow and there is a noticable input lag so I would love to work without it, but I won't have the money for Tobii anytime soon.

    Coming from a longtime TIR user, how susceptible is the Tobii to background light/reflection/ir interference? That has always been my #1 issue with TIR.

      I knwo the problem you mean - i've used Tobii in both dark conditions and light conditions too during daytime - not had any issues yet. i've had the curtains drawn though so not sure if like direct sunlight or someithng would have any effect

    The Tobii 5 is a cool device if you can afford it.The short USB cable is btw. really nice if you have a USB hub in your monitor or on the table.
    There is also one cool feature missing in the video I think and that is the ability to lock on targets, you are looking at. Can't do that with Track IR. 😉
    The setup can take quiet a while to make it feel really perfect for you but I also don't wanna miss it anymore.

      Do you use it on foot and in the cockpit, or just while flying? I found that there was some initial adjustment when I was getting used to head tracking (and now a little more when getting used to eye tracking) but that the 'auto centering' on the tobii does a pretty good job of bringing everything back to the right direction - I did find getting a good deadzone for 'position' axis was helpful for cockpit tracking too - these options are all in the Star Citizen menu too which is super helpful :)

    Sadly the Tobii Eye Tracer 5 doesn't work on Linux. I used to have one, loved it, but had to sell it because the lack of interest of the company supporting any platform other than Windows. For now, the 240Hz Monkey King from Grass Monkey Simulation works like a charm on both platforms and it's like TrackIR but on steroids.

  • @Yuulaw

    Not to discredit their awesome tech but for the niche usecase and that price I'd have hoped it would fulfill the basic need of a webcam as well. The Tobii 5 will work with windows on face login but wont let you use it as a webcam or do face tracking. Strangely enough I scoured the internet and forums to get a simple yes/no to face tracking and couldn't get a concrete answer on over an hour of searching. I contacted their support and their answer was it did not currently support it. This still doesn't answer if it will support it in the future. They claim to have a high resolution and sensitive camera but whether you will be able to use it independently of its other active functions is unknown. Their lack of transparency lost them my money, which i may have spent regardless of their answer if they were just clear with me.
