    Can truly say that The Smashing Pumpkins have and have always had such a unique and true to them style. Never tried to please people, just created the art that they desired. Have continued to do so until this very day.
    When Billy was a young pup, he was arrogant, defensive and full of ego. That has matured into one of the most flavourful fine wines ive seen. Now he can look back and laugh and put the ego aside, but he still has that intensely analytical and self assured way of thinking, so hearing him reflect on the art making process is phenomenal.
    Hes linked to every single great artist i listen to, he's weaved into history and im glad hes alive to talk about it all.

  • @horrorpowerfilms9481
    @horrorpowerfilms9481 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    What I like about checking interviews with Alternative/Grunge acts that survived, that they are finally mature enough to talk about what other generations acts talked for years, it isn't "against this and that" anymore, Corgan is joining the rite of passage of every famous Rock band that goes beyond success and failure, you hear EXACTLY the same point of views of interviews like rockers like Bon Jovi , Aerosmith, even Tommy Lee. Welcome to the club Billy...btw is great to see you smile more.

      I don't know that that's true because he has competitive streak clearly from this and he basically made a pumpkins theatrical version of ok computer himself, and that is selling out in that way, but he seems at peace with that which is honest. Whether Cobain could have turned corners and been at peace with his art in way Lennon was, and maybe even progressing further, is the thing with artists. Cobain may have been scared he didnt know how Lennon or Hendrix would have evolved, but maybe he saw himself as better than R.E.M,/the pixies, or not as good and it messed him up. Corgan is arguably more mundane, but Cornell and Cobain being consumed, if Corgan is flipside, he's at least refreshing in that distinction, because both are insecure in their way,, but to still use that insecurity as fuel if able to bare is life. Universe was trying to kill Corgan more than Cobain seems like, so Corgain wanted to be his own expression, vs being the universe's expression. Selling out is artistically valid when it is, because there's external levels of insatiability that won't be able to distinguish that, other then in moment time.

Billy was especially emotional and combative - his I Am One rant still rings in my ears after all these years. It's crazy to see an interview with Billy Corgan. Actually feeling comfortable with the situation and the person interviewing since you guys have known each other for so long I feel like we got to see a different side of him. that is not normally out with all the other Media obviously it's going to be different between the younger version Of billy corgan and the older wiser version but you get to see aside of him that does not seem as Egotistical like earlier interviews make him seem. I love how humble he was about Kurt Cobain and the fact of how much talent he had and it's like winning a game on technicality he wanted. Cobain to live and continue to make great music. So he himself could try to be competitive with that said music. Just like he said if you want to be the best you have to beat the best very good interview sorry for the long comments

      Through Mellon Collie and In Utero respectively, so through their creative peaks, Billy was clearly better, more dynamic, and a better guitar player, better overall musician. Kurt's canonization is mostly just a product of tastemaker illusion + his death.

    • @lippi2171
      @lippi2171 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Billy's been speaking highly of Kurt in the recent years and I had thought he'd be the last one to do so. Recently he called Nevermind the once in a generation album and compared it to the Ed Sullivan Beatles appearance. I believe Billy wholeheartedly recognises Kurt as the best of their time and I never heard him openly say he cried for Kurt.
      That being said I think Pumpkins music is more varied and deeper in songwriting, but Kurt had the privilege to have this mixture of personality, sound, mood round him and his music to become the generational icon of that age.

      @@nordstrandmusicinternation9518 I get your point, but "big" dosen't mean better.
      For example, Psy "gangnam style" is over 4.7 bilions views, Nirvana "Smells like teen spirit" is over 1.6 billions viwes.
      Is "gangam style" better than "Smells like teen spirit"? For me, it isn't but who knows better to say.
      I grew up on both bands' music (nirvava and smashing pumpkins), and so many more btw, but to be honest, sp music never meant that much to me, but I still have a decent knowledge on their catalogue.
      Nirvana was the band for me back in the days. Kurt (and Nirvana) has written some great unique songs for sure.
      That said, Billy had/has a wider knowledge of music theory compared to Kurt, which allowed him to write some unique songs as well. He (with the pumpkins) wrote songs that Kurt could never have written. I still prefer nirvana over the pumpkins but credit where it's due.

    I'm happy with ATUM amd Cyr. They're different. The production is extremely different.
    I'm waiting for the Machina Reissue Box.
    Real Love, Vanity, Blue Skies, Speed Kills, Wound, Age of Innocence... These have been my favorite tunes for decades now.
    I'm a Billy Corgan apologist.
    Dude, "Crush" alone is better than anything D'arcy has ever done. That one song is better than anything most songwriters will ever churn out. He's a genius songwriter. The imagery of swans, cherubs, falling through the century on a supersonic cross... Billy Corgan is a genius, and people rag on him all the time. Back when Machina came out, a friend laughed at me for buying it.
    "No one listens to the Pumpkins anymore." he told me. Then he wrote down a list of other bands for me to listen to.
    What I can remember of that list is as follows:
    1. Snow Patrol
    2. The Get Up Kids
    3. Incubus
    Eh. Incubus was much better than the other two, but Machina has aged better than anyone could have expected.
    Rain in the Summertime is great btw
    Long live the Pumpkins.

    • @jayvee5686
      @jayvee5686 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnkrazzki6492 yeah, it's great. I remember looking through that CD booklet with all the esoteric hermetic artwork. Same as I did for "The Fragile" by Trent, the look and feel and smell of the paper was unique. That's something that is lost now with purely digital music.
      I feel like Billy took their sound and look to their logical conclusion.
      Jimmy, James, and Melissa were my favorite incarnation of that band, but by that point I guess the general public no longer cared. Hopefully the reissue gets some attention.
      Even the Adore reissue, while not my favorite album had some surprises. "Blank Page" early version sounds like water flowing through abandoned buildings in some future flooded city scape. Billy is always attempting to reach some sort of vision he has

    Atum is incredible. My personal favorite since Adore. To those who aren’t sure and are quick to dismiss it, it’s not Mellon collie or Siamese Dream or Gish. It’s not an album to just skim through and look for that type of sound. It is its own thing and really needs you to stop and take the time to actually listen to it. Pumpkins are ever evolving and they’ve always been evolving since the beginning and I for one really appreciate that. Thank you for yet another masterpiece and thank you Zane for another great interview as always.
