    You ARE AN EXCELLENT TEACHER! Short, concise words as you SHOW exactly what you teach! I've been searching for a video like this for 2 months and the ones I found were way too wordy, went on forever and were boring as hell... But yours are short, not wordy and get right to the point and showed me exactly what I wanted to learn--QUICK!

    After watching your video, I scoured the yard sales & Salvation Army for blenders. I set the price at $10/per blender. Found 4-5 blenders at that price. As you pointed out, the blenders are not designed to do these types of operations.
    Reason that I acquired so many blenders was that I wanted to attempt to pulverize a portion of my "play sand" as well as the Kitty Litter.
    And yes..., before anyone points out the dangers of inhaling silica sand dust..., all respiratory precautions were done during ALL pulverizing operations.., I worked outside, wore a good quality respirator, and used a large shop fan to blow away the dust.
    Now my ratio of ingredients is: 4 parts regular "double sifted" play sand, 4 parts "double sifted" pulverized play sand, & 2 parts "double sifted" Kitty Litter.
    The resulting GreenSand is super fine, and produces a very fine surface on castings.
    Thank you for your tutelage that helped me formulate my GreenSand!
    Stay well!
    Edit: pulverizing play sand really wears out the stainless steel blades on the blenders, and I actually pour the pulverized sand across a molybdenum magnet a few times, and removed a few grams of steel. I'm not sure if that microscopic steel would've caused any issues, but my OCD wouldn't let me not try this step..

    I used to work in a steel foundry for a while many years ago (before UK got rid of most if its manufacturing industry) and was working with huge moulds and casts - your videos explain the whole process perfectly in a smaller scale and are brilliant! Thank you

      @@lenny108 it depends on what kind of sand you make, my sand uses water

      @@MakinSumthinFromNuthin Let's say you pour a metal in that mold that has a temperature of 900 C the whole mold will explode when there is water in the sand. The water immediately turns into steam.

    One of the best teaching methods on U Tube. Now to give back- When sand blasting, you can use the cheaper sand, the kind that always clogs your gun, if you sift it the way Sumthin does. You can also sift with a larger sifter, the kind that has a squeeze-actuated arm that does the work. Saves a lotta money! Thanks again, Sumthin! Superior video!

    I’ll second everything Jeff said. This is just what I was looking for as I am already making my wooden pattern and as I’m waiting for different parts to cure, glue, filler ect I want to get on with making the sand. Thanks so much for the lesson and showing how straightforward it really is. After seeing your kitten casting your green sand is more than good enough for me. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺

    Very nicely presented ,no nonsense,straight and to the point.Never heard of play-sand in Ireland and kitty litter I also need to research.I also need to find another method of breaking down the kitty litter.(probably make another project out of that).One thing is sure ; I am going to have a go.And I think I will also have a go at making an air-tight lid so it holds as much moisture as it needs without having to remix.Thanks for sharing and I will let you know how it went.

    Thank you so much for making this tutorial. You instructions are excellent. I am new to sand casting. I started off on my own with a pattern and tried plaster of Paris which ended up as a disaster. Huge mess and lousy results. Next I tried Portland cement. That too was an utter failure. My next attempt will be green sand. I am looking to cast small lead hammers to use in my home machine shop. I figure that as they get all mushroomed over, I can just melt them back down and cast new hammers.

    Thanks for sharing! I tired substituting time for work and just hydrated the clay to make it a liquid, poured it though a strainer and into the sand. Stirred a little every other day for 2-3 weeks until it was dry enough again. Less work grinding clay if you don't have a blender, but it too much longer of course.

He's been dragging us all over the county for the stuff, but it's either marked up too high or not something they carry. Can't wait to see how the sand blaster sand compares to the play sand. After finding that a bag of casting sand on the internet was $85, plus expensive shipping, it was wonderful to learn that good casting sand can be made in this way. Also noticed you cut slots in the perimeter of your casting trays like the professional ones -- seemed like a great security measure. Good video.

    Great video - just what I was looking for. To get a really super (and I MEAN SUPER) fine sifter, take apart a defunct microwave oven and remove the transparent covering from the screen in the door. Have a backup though, as this may be TOO fine for your patience. I found some behind a Sears store, manager said he had to PAY to have them hauled away, so was happy to receive a very small token payment.

    I know this isn't an option for folks who live out west, but if you live somewhere with cecil soil, or really all of the piedmont on the east coast, but you can really just use the clay from the ground (but make sure to wash it first by mixing it around in water, then, right after agitating it, pour off most of the slurry). And about 3 feet under the surface, the clay is in the perfect ratio with sand that it can work as greensand right from the ground.

      +Makin Sumthin From Nuthin OK, I got ahead of myself and decided to try this today. home depot must get the sand from a different place around you. I got the same quikrete play sand and the same strainer from walmart and started to sift. I am not getting hardly ANYTHING. almost all of the sand is big enough that it wont go through that fine strainer. I grabbed the strainer from the house that isnt as fine and it let much more though but I am not happy with how course the sand is. Any ideas?

    • @MakinSumthinFromNuthin

      I would watch my other videos on casting items and get a sense of how that aspect works. Molds can only be made by items that will release from the sand and not destroy the sand upon removal. If making "men" you may have to use a process called lost wax casting....depends on what the men look like

    One method of wetting the mix I've seen, is to put the dry mix on a tarp and spray it then fold the corners into the center to mix it, repeating till it is damp enough to use.
    Cheers Eric

    Kitty litter is diatomacious earth. Sand is silica. They are both silica. The dust from it will cause silicosis. You really need to wear a respirator or at the very least a dust mask when working with them to prevent silicosis.

      actually the kitty litter he mentioned, the one that lists clay on the label is bentonite clay. but yes a respirator is a must when working with anything this finely powdered.

    • @DustinMaki1
      @DustinMaki1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thing that makes play sand OK for kids is that the fine silica has been removed to reduce silicosis risk. Then the kitty litter adds it right back. We pay for that processing when we buy both, and do additional labor to mix them again. How much better is the result of this process than just sifting plain old regular free sand off the ground that already has bentonite in it?

    • @jasongrinnell1986
      @jasongrinnell1986 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dustin Maki not sure of what you are talking about. Sand is sand and it does not lose its silica properties. The bentonite clay that is used for cat liter is commonly taken from Wyoming. Never dug up sand with bentonite already in it. I have never seen kids in a play box wear a respirator or on a beach covered in sand. I think people watching this video should wear a respirator for him instead being the little kid that say oooooooohhhhh your not wearing a respirator!!!!!!!!!!

    A tip when mixing to decrease the amount of powder flying everywhere:
    When you are layering sand with bentonite clay (which is what litter is made off), put a thin layer of sand on top of it and stir it by hand a bit (which means still using the mixer, but as if you were having a spoon in your hand, rather than a power tool). This way part of clay will go down a bit between the sand grains and the top layer of sand will further decrease the amount of particles flying around once the mixer is on.
    In other words - act as if you were mixing dough for a cake and don't want your entire kitchen in flour.

    Tip for grinding the litter... Tip the blender to the side while it is running. This will cause the litter to move around more for a more even consistency. It will also reduce the load on the blades.

    In your other video of the whole process, it looked like you used the green sand only where it contacts the item, then used the unfiltered sand on top of that to compress it all. Or are you only using green sand and no unfiltered sand? Thank you.

    I've watched a couple of your AWESOME videos, and first I have to say thank you for covering all the details of what your doing and why your doing it. I recently tore down my grandma's old house so it could be replaced (mobile homes), and my wife saved some of the aluminum siding. she wants me to cast a couple of matching necklace pendants for family members. do you have any ideas on how to make a custom plaster mold?

    • @MakinSumthinFromNuthin
      @MakinSumthinFromNuthin  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Mike, I have done some castings using plaster "patterns"....not plaster molds. What you refer to is investment casting...a much more detailed process involving making patterns from wax, then encapsulated in plaster for casting. I know how to do it but have no videos on the subject. Others do tho...most investment casting is done with precious metals and not aluminum

      okay, I'll see what I can find online for that. it's just that the siding from the house was "a part of our lives". so using that aluminum will have sentimental value. thanks for your help. and keep making videos so I can keep watching them, lol.
