His debut hit, peaked at # 2 in the UK charts in the Summer of 1972 and was kept off the top spot by Donny Osmond's - Puppy Love ! From the beginning this was a distinctive sound with those guitars and two drummers. A rare but not unique concept. I recall that The Honeycombs in the 60's and Adam and the Ants also used two drummers. There are probably other bands who used two drummers, though I can't think of anymore of the top of my head:

Recognizable by nobody born after it was released. Absolute snooze fest. The bassline lacks any semblance of creativity, and the lyrics are crap. If it were in my record collection I'd sell it on discogs for 99 cents just hoping for somebody to pay the outrageous shipping cost for this steaming pile of shit.
A lot of people in the comments are acting like we're listening to Cream's live performance of crossroads or something.. lmfao you boomers will latch onto anything for nostalgia just like people nowadays freak out when somebody plays Eiffel 65.

Can you still recall in the juke box hall
    When the music played
And the world span 'round to a brand new sound
    In those far off days
In their blue suede shoes, they would scream and shout
As they they sang the blues, let it all hang out
Rock and roll, rock and roll
Rock and roll, rock and roll
Rock and roll, rock and roll
Rock and roll, rock, rock and roll
Rock and roll, rock, rock and roll

    Dancing to the beat
With her U.S. Male and her pony tail
    She looked so sweet
Times are changing fast, but we won't forget
Though the age has passed they'll be rockin yet
Rock and roll, rock and roll

My band teacher used to make us play this back in the early 2000's. He was pretty old and served in the Army band. This was the only song that I truly liked that we did; I was super pumped that I got to do the base drum part! I would hear this tune all the time on TV when sports commercials came on so it felt kind of special. Anyways, that drum beat has influenced my sense of rhythm immensely and although I switched to guitar, I still Rock and Roll.

In the States, Gary Glitter was considered a one hit wonder because of "Rock n' Roll Part 2." I think they still play the song at sporting events and get involved with the "Hey" part. I used to wonder: Were they standing in the studio waiting at the right times to shout "Hey," because from my experiences in recording, the vocals are last to be recorded after all of the other instruments. It turned out that I heard "Part 1" from a Glam Rock compilation and also hearing Gary perform live in which both 1 and 2 were mixed in the chorus--"Rock and ro-olll, hey! rock and roll.." There's no denying his success, but it made me wonder what was the need for two parts of "Rock n' Roll"?
