Remember Gatsby saying he can turn back time, before when meets daisy at Nicks house. He leans back so far that he moves the clock off the shelf, then catches it, then says he will buy a new clock. Symbolic of turning back time. He fixes the clock and leaning back into the clock, turning back time. He leans back but Tom Buchanan leans forward.
What about the dog Tom buys for Myrtle? I feel like it's a symbol for how Tom sees women. He sees them as "bitches" that can be bought and bought again.
Tom buys a dog for Myrtle to please her (she's cheap, she has no social status) Gatsby goes and makes a fortune, buys a castle, throws ridiculously extravagant parties just to get Daisy's attention (she's important, she's old money) There's no way to compare both girls they're from two different worlds. Their social class dictates the way they are treated.
I wasn't a literature person and cared so much about symbolism until I read and watched the great gatsby something about the last line gets to me and moves me deeply
I just finished reading this for fun, not for school sadly, but I didn't quite understood it (kind of hard to understand). Loved that you explained the symbols! This helped me to understand the story better, thank you!
Thanks firstly , i just wan to add another symbol and correct me plz if i am wrong . so , in this quote : “There was a machine in the kitchen which could extract the juice of two hundred oranges in half an hour, if a little button was pressed two hundred times by a butler’s thumb.” i think that Gatsby is like the oranges and people who are surrounded by him are the machine .I.e people takes the advantage of him , they squeeze him and get the benefits from him . it is like a metaphor.
Thank you for the summary. Loved the examples you used for the old and new money. Also I didn't noticed until after I watched the video the significance of the weather. WOWWWWWW MIND BLOWN...IT AL MAKES SINCE. THE GREAT GATSBY IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES. I LOVE IT
Well Ms Brown it did so happen Im afraid Ithat I hade a totally different mindset while watching this flick, nevertheless I very much enjoyed Your thougts om the matter.
Why is no one ever talking about how Nick always describes flowers when Daisy is nearby? The kind of the flower and the state is always saying something about what is going on, mostly in regard to her relationship with Gatsby
Totally different show , buuuut. In once upon a time Emma swan drive a yellow car ,( I suppose she brought life/hope) But I understand they are two different characters
I was confused about the yellow too, to be honest. I thought it's such a bold colour, I wouldn't connect it to cowardice, but I'm no expert in the symbolism of colour :D And I mean, Emma is anything but a coward!
@@RTHSEnglishwithMsBrown I'm not really a "death of the author" kind of guy, but your position certainly is a popular one. Interesting video nonetheless. I'll watch more of your videos in the future no doubt.

This can also be linked to materialism, greed and corruption of the Americans in the 1920s.

Great job, but it would be fun to analyze Daisy, "The misunderstood American bitch."
Thank you!

I'm always skeptical that Fitzgerald actually really meant all of this so-called symbolism to mean anything at all.
Readers bring meaning to the text-- even above an author's intention, certain colors, objects, are archetypal and become symbolic for the readers.
