    Remember people every Border Collie is different. This video points out different traits and doesn't mean your collie will have every one of these traits. They are very driven, loyal, and are very capable. DON'T LET THIS SCARE YOU. Put in the work to train your dog and don't be lazy. All good things take work!

    I'm on my second border collie, so my advice is that these are companions, not pets. They are more like children and very attentive to their people. So these are not just a dog to walk occasionally or take to the park on the spare weekend if you have the chance...these are activity partners, needs your time/attention and dedication. They need to be walked and stimulated. Agree with the mental stimulation since they watch their owner for feedback and follow you everywhere, even to the toilet. Issues involve being hypersensitive and can get anxious over being in small spaces and loud noises. My first BC would get aggressive if anyone walked up on me without me knowing it.

      JT, this is of the best summary I have read, the only thing I would add is that the training never stops! A Border Collie is a big commitment, if you do not have the time or energy to commit, then don't get a Collie! However if you do have the time and energy, you will end up with one of the best pals you have ever had.

      Loud unexpected noises , hates the smoke alarm , not every collie will do amazing tricks but they are able to learn , most doors are easy opened by them , fireworks hates but is getting better aged 2 , hates cats lol

      Absolutely. People say their minds must be stimulated. But this doesn’t mean playing 4D chess. Taking them on errands and generally having them with you whenever you can keeps them stimulated and happy. Early on I worried about dreaming up fake ‘work’ for her-now I realise she just wants to be with her people and sharing the day’s activities as much as possible.

    They are without a doubt the smartest dog I have ever known. My boss has one that we all know and love on big time...whenever my boss goes away, even for one night or on a holiday, this dog pines as though her owner will never return...she will scour the trail/road between her home and the workplace endlessly and refuse to eat for a few days until her beloved mistress returns if she's away for longer...eventually she can be tempted with bacon and other food, but it's a chore to convince her that she hasn't been abandoned.
    We all love her and she knows it....us breakfast cooks have learned that the way to her heart is bacon. She can even spell it if you're not careful. We love you ole girl and we dread the day you don't show up at the kitchen door looking for the treat that is just as fun for us as it is for you.

    I currently am owned by my second Border/Aussie mix! My first grew up with my daughters and was a nanny to every living thing she could find and her job outside of caring for her family was as a registered therapy dog in our community. When she left this world, a piece of my heart left with her. I can honestly tell you the grief was almost unbearable...she was my right hand girl.
    fast forward four years later and we adopted another Border/Aussie mix. She is my red wildling...intelligent, quirky, brave, protective and always at my side. Shes not the least bit interested in meeting new people or dogs and lives life on her own terms. She loves to be with me, spending time together. Shes taught me so much about dog behavior. Training her, playing with her, hiking and running together has brought us so close. Working through her resource guarding and building confidence and a bond of trust and love... she continues to amaze me and teach me!
    Dogs are just the best souls, and i often ask myself what did i do to deserve their love and devotion

    My border collie, Jake is now 3 years old. He is my first border collie, I was persuaded by the family (2 teenagers) that we really needed one of these dogs so we took him on as a puppy. Down the line, I feel that this has been a real learning curve. Jake is the smartest, most incredible and rewarding dog. We are all in love with him, as is everyone who meets him. I would observe that there are a few fundamentals that need to be accepted. Firstly, border collies need absolutely shed loads of exercise. Without this, I think they would be very unhappy. I am a runner, and I have fields near my house, he bounds along beside me, we go for miles. Secondly, he needs entertainment. When I m gardening, or whatever, I have to constantly throw,or kick his ball for him. He takes up a huge slice of my attention. If you are not prepared for this, don’t have one! But if you can put in the time, the love and the effort, they are the best dogs in the world.

We took super small steps over 2-3 days to get her familiar with the look, sound and movement of the vacuum cleaner. But I really need to learn her how to relax when she is out of her playpen. My 1st BC, a 2yo rescue, was locked in an apartment alone all day, and was "got rid of" because he became a barker, annoying neighbours. Now he lives on a 10,000m2 plot, surrounded by mountains, and I am home all day. He still barks, but now it is at his own echo (so not that smart, eh?) and not a problem, the nearest neighbour is 1/2 a mile away. After a rocky start, he has settled down with the cat, who now terrifies him if he pushes his luck (what wuss he has become). He follows me diligently ALL day, his treat is an hour or two on the sofa before bed, and his absolute favourites things are car rides (after throwing up the 1st few times) and walks where he encounters sheep. You can see the cogs whirring, he knows there is something very, VERY important about them, but isn't sure what, so he stalks (on the lead) then ruins all his good work by scaring them off with a good bark.

    Nice video, thanks :) It helped a lot since most people only tell the nice things about the breed. I have a mudi (Hungarian shepherd) and I would like a second dog with the same energy level (I love to train him and go for hikes, running, agility or do obedience training), and after watching borders in the herding center, I fell in love with them. Originally I wanted another mudi, but nobody told me the dark side of them, and now that I know...no waaay! :D He is EXTREMELY barky and reactive, at the beginning I had a really hard time with him in the dog school (I simply couldn't hear anything and make him stop). He still growls and barks at everything that moves (people, cats, squirrels, birds and sometimes at nothing :D ), and he is very reactive, so I try to get an active, but less noisy dog (maybe border isn't for me).

    • @TheDogVlog
      @TheDogVlog  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for posting. I am SO interested in Mudis and have really considered getting one also. The things you describe about barkiness and reactivity are some of the reasons I have hesitated. Border collies can tend to be motion sensitive too, not all are barky but some can be. I do love border collies though, quirks and all!

    • @noemikovacs4975
      @noemikovacs4975 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheDogVlog Mudis are really funny, clever, healthy, and loving guys, but not for beginners or "furmoms" :) Mine learns really quickly, recall is perfect from day 1 (they say you can't lose a mudi and I totally agree), also an enthusiastic sportsdog, they are great in agility, puller, frisbie, mantrailing, canicross, and obedience. I'm still happy with my decision, but I'm not ready for 2 mudis, I want a bit "smoother" personality for the second one. I met borders in the dog school and at the herding center, and they were much less barky and reactive, but more independent (they tend to know things better :D ). Maybe if your mudi would grow up surrounded by borders, he would be much quieter than mine. Socialization is a must, I should have paid more attention to it and let him meet more people. So if I were you I would give it a go and meet some mudis in person and visit some breeders if possible, because in good hands they are great dogs :) You can find some really good videos about them at Molnár Aliz's channel (she is a dog breeder who has working borders and mudis as well).

I used to do bird control with my dogs and I know someone who does airport work with a Mudi; they are apparently awesome for that. Would definitely like to meet a few of them. @@luksicmaja5966 I noticed with my youngest dog that although he seemed to love being out on my deck, he was actually fixating on listening to sounds from the neighbour's dogs and nearby squirrels. His behaviour would get worse when he was out there, even though at first it seemed like he was just relaxing in the sunshine. I have found that he is a lot better when he can go to a very quiet place when he is resting, usually in his crate in the house. Sometimes I even put him in a crate in my car if it is cool outside, just to give him a break from everything. Some border collies can be so vigilant that they don't know how to relax. I do a lot of recall and other fun games with him now, because building a relationship is also really important, especially if I want him to behave in certain ways that don't come naturally to him.

    I have a year and a half old border aussie and she’s the most affectionate dog we’ve ever had! It takes a LOOOOOT of patience to take care of her sometimes, and she is still learning a lot more, but she is a very loving and protective dog! She had a really bad issue of killing our chickens last year but after a lot of trial and error she caught onto the fact that that was a bad thing to do and eventually curved her behavior!! It was very worrisome as many vets told us she would never get over that habit, but it seems patience is the best method :) I highly recommend border collies/aussies they will change your life in a good way :D

    My Border Collie (Murphy) loves our cats. The cats never hesitate to cuddle up and sleep with him. I got him at 8 weeks old and we had just gotten 2 kittens a week earlier as we wanted them to all grow up together. Worked like a charm in our case. Not only do they nap together but the cats will walk up and take a bite of food right out of the dogs dish even if the dog is currently eating. He does chase the cats but they have long ago figured out what makes him chase and I have seen the cats many many times instigate the chase. One of the cats loves to follow the dog around outside especially late night potty walks when I have the dog on his leash. We did have a little bit of house destruction in his 1st year or so. Couch pillows mostly and the odd corner of the coffee table but we were aware this was a possibility before we got the dog. The hard part was not laughing at 2 cats and a dog in the middle of the living room covered in pillow stuffing. Our whole family loves Murphy but even with the room to run and play outside and two people to take him out, sometimes more if we ask the kids to take him out I still think he isn't getting enough. Granted he would go out to run and play all day if we had the time, sometime I still feel like he could use more. I do get the eye when it's time for a potty break but I really count myself lucky in regards to the health and behavioral issues you mentioned. Murphy will be 4 y/o in March and we have never seen any sign of them at all. I take that back he hides under our desks whenever one of us even so much as touches the vacuum cleaner as well as whenever there are fireworks about. lol

    Formost a BC is a breed apart.. They (need) connecting with you like no other dog (breed) will. i have a BC x and had a BC from workiing lines in the past and will get a puppy next year. I recognise sensibility ( my BC Flinn, was very sensitive to loud noises like fire work but also to loud voices). He did not have 'prey drive' issues. But had joint issues which needed surgery.
    There is no other breed that wants or rather needs to connect . Both are empathic clinging. MY BCx Kicki could create tension upon other dogs by the way she seek the other dogs attention (stare and in 'herding down'). She barks while in prey drive pursuit in "play" with other dogs. I believe it helps alot if you understand dog behavior so that you recognise upcoming issue's and work on it. My recalls are very good on her and this helps when I see she gets to overly excited in 'play'. Flinn is my BC from the past and the reason I want to have another. I miss everything about him. I considered him as ,' my friend 'He was a tri collored short haired BC from more then a decade ago but i still get sad when I see a tri collored BC who looks like him

    I pined for a border collie for years after I lost my last dog but since I am up in years I thought it would be too much for me given I have a small farm and acreage to maintain. But One day 3 years ago I got me a puppy from a local farmer. Dancer is her name and a stock dog in her genes. The 1st year was as described in the vid, the 2nd year she began to settle down and now 3 years later, behavior and temperament is mostly calm except when its not. Her main function is guard dog which she performs at night mostly. I must play with her every day, she insists upon that and if I get slack in my duties she will do something like screw with the chickens or rabbits knowing full well that she is saying I'd better go get that Frisbee, lol. yeah, I'm an old man, but Dancer has been God sent.

    I’m retired and have a good size parcel of land. I’d like to get a dog, but not in a hurry because I know it’s a long term commitment. I’ve spent the winter watching a lot of videos of a lot of different breeds. It’s pretty easy to get impressed with Border Collies if all you watch is Collies working a sheep herd. But I was wondering if I had what it takes to own one of these. That was a long way around the block to say. Thank You for such a excellent video. You answered my question. I don’t have what a Border Collie needs other then a lot of space. But I’m very impressed with this breed.

    • @TheDogVlog
      @TheDogVlog  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching! The land is honestly less important than the human interaction. They are dogs that really love to learn and be challenged and have a lot of physical exercise needs. But they also do need calm time. Of course all dogs are work though. I love border collies, I also spend a lot of time training. I hope you find the perfect dog for your lifestyle.

    I have owned borders for 25 years. Currently without and my life seems empty. I will get one more rescue, at a healthy and fit 68 I have just one more in me. DO NOT underestimate the energy levels of these dogs. I used to be a competitive mountain bike racer and my border would accompany on training rides six days a week in the mountains of Vermont. I would let him choose the trails [they learn fast] and invariably he would opt for the longest. 40 to 70 miles each morning. Back home I would shower and change before going to the garage to clean Rocky in his shower. I would be knackered - he was like, "can we do it again, please, please, please?" Do not think a one two or three hour walk is sufficient exercise! In the afternoons, we would play frisbee, a game for which he had just two speeds, stop or flat out. They are the ultimate dig athletes.

    • @TheDogVlog
      @TheDogVlog  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some BCs really don't have an off button. I like to do a lot of games that include mental stimulation because some will do more than their bodies can actually handle. My oldest BC would have seizures from fetching the ball, so we do a lot of short training sessions throughout the day and work a lot on training calm. It's true they can be amazing athletes. They often ignore their own pain to continue "working" in whatever form they can do. :)

      @@TheDogVlog How lovely to get a reply! My Rocky [the mountain biking dog] did in fact have. a great 'off' switch. He led a charmed life. I adopted him from a family break up in the UK. I then emigrated, first to Bermuda, [Rocky crossed the Atlantic on the QE2] then to VT. In Bermuda he would play frisbee even on a hot day. One time he got himself into heat stress - and, of course, was smart enough to go straight to the garden hose where I would spray him down! My second, Ben could not run to the MTB - he had poor hips. In the end I took him to the world's leading canine hip replacement surgeon for a titanium hip. To this day I say it was the best money I ever spent. Eventually cancer hit him and myself at the same time. I wrote a blog. Dip in if you like here: www.meandben.com

    CBD oil works for the epilepsy. Aeon will not tolerate any separation and goes into a full meltdown if something is separating us. I can finally go into another room now that I bought us a house. If I sneak out I pay for it for a week afterwards. It’s easier to just take him with because he’s so good around people and dogs.

    Our border baby is only 5 months old, but I can already tell how true this is. If he didn't have a 7 months old border friend to have a play date every day, we could not make him tired. He is the love of our lives, but you need to be sooo calm all day, which can be exhausting.
    And only one thing to add to the list in the video: they are very smart, but they don't know how to communicate like a person. You need to learn with them. For example, our dog sleeps in the same room as us, once He was standing on us and would not go away, it turned out He had to poop... Which He did. But we could not punish him, even if it happened át 3 am., because He tried to say it, we just didn't know. But now we will 😊
    Ps. We are 20 years old, and it still exhausting for us to be on his energy level. But He loves absolutely everyone who is nice to him💕

    I had one border collie that like to talk to you about nothing just to get your attention. I named him dog but should of called him houdini. He could clear a 9 foot fence, walk a chain link fence and find a way out to visit the apartments next door. If i clapped my hands twice he would run down a block over a block and up a block to the front gate to return home. It did not help the people would feed him through the fence. Sometimes the people would walk him back home. One day he got out and tried to use the street and got hit by a car. a different border collie i had would not go thru the open gate for anything after i shouted when i found him all the way home and he would not go thru the gate again for anything. He would chase a dog to the gate and stop. If his ball went beyond the open gate he would stop at the gate and look at you for help.
    Had another one that would find abandon kittens on the property and would try to take care of them while bringing them to me. Very gently carrying them in his mouth.
    My first border collie was a mix puppy but from then on they have been from the pond and mixed border collies.
    Rottweiler

      Yes, it's always good to hear some of the potential behaviours so that it's not a surprise. They were bred to respond to movement, to be aware of their environment at all times, and to be persistent. So many of what people consider "problems" really are typical border collie behaviours. Make sure you go crate training day 1 on arrivel @home. These lovely dogs can keep on going as puppy and you destroy there legs( be prepared for a lot moments when they try you out for a walk ). Just learn the reading of your puppy.
    Mine did on 16weeks (hes now 18 weeks) Barking and beeping in the crate while he didn't really need to go out and poo or pee. Ignore was the key to get the potty training going.
    They are High intelligent working dogs they want to learn and do stuff in no time, learn them the basics sit stay follow etc etc and they learn it Fast..
    Be prepared for Tug of War games on leash, and the 'Eye' you can learn a bit off, but takes a lot of time.
    Mine is learning in house a job/task to get his toys out of a box, then plays with them, and put them back in the box (he learned this in 4 days ). This keeps my puppy occupied for 1,5 hours and then he falls a sleep in the crate.
    I'm lucky he is not chasing my old Norwegian forest cat, but Kids he loves to chase, cars he is eye'ing on.
    Ow and if you have to leave your home while crate training, turn on some Chopin classic music =) (it works for me) he will sleep then.
    My opinion, no hardcore tricks till he learned how to potty, sleep, and walk wit you without using the 'eye'.
    Turn twist stuff like that can be learned later on, just do the basics, they learn fast =)

    I want to get a border collie in around a year. I could give him at least a 45min walk per day but I do have school and I’m on a highly competitive track team so I would have that 3 times a week for 4h. My mom would be home for most of the day though but would he have to get more exercise than 45min? I would also go for runs on weekends for around 5-10k

    • @TheDogVlog
      @TheDogVlog  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Border Collies do require more exercise and mental stimulation than the average dog. The dog might be wanting a lot of attention from your mom, so it depends on whether she would be willing to do some other things to keep the dog busy. I have one border collie with major separation anxiety and 45 minutes once a day wouldn't be quite enough for him. If you could walk the dog before you go out in the morning, then after school that would help. Also some training classes like doing dog agility once a week are really good for a lot of border collies. It's great you are asking questions and preparing in advance! Good luck!

    I really want a border collie but I work a full time job. I got my first border collie when I was 12 and I trained him to go off leash in a field and on our lawn in just 3 weeks at the age of 15 weeks. I work a full time job and I am going to give him 1 hour of field exercise in the morning and 1-2 hours when I come home. I will also be paying a neighbourhood kid to walk my dog around the block and play with him in my backyard for a bit. Do you think my dog will be ok.

    • @TheDogVlog
      @TheDogVlog  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It just depends on the individual dog. Some get used to a schedule like that, I have had a couple with separation related issues who would find it hard to cope with being alone that long. But having said that I had an Aussie cross when I was working full time. I walked him in the morning before work, dropped in at lunch, then spent evenings doing things with him, trick training, agility, hikes. He had a full life but it does take a lot of dedication.

    We’re getting a border collie puppy soon! We already have another dog, and I can say that most of these are for every dog if you don’t put in the time and energy. I’m wondering if it’s right for me? I go to school for 7 hours but I will take it on two walks in the morning, two walks at night, plenty of time for play, a huge budget for toys, treats, etc. I will dedicate tons of time into training. (I already do for my other dog who is a senior chihuahua but he’s very stubborn and has started turning his back to me when training.) I will be extremely tolerant with everything that happens. I’m willing to take this dog to dog parks and dedicate tons of time into socializing, training, decreasing energy, and lots of love and affection. I’m trying to convince my dad to come home for lunch, but that’s not looking too good. Overall, I’ll love this dog sooo much.

      It just really depends on how dedicated people are to the dog. They are dogs that were bred for work and for endurance and problem solving skills, so it's something to definitely keep in mind. It's always good to really weigh the pros and the cons, since bc's are often a decade and a half commitment. Each individual dog is different too. Thanks for doing your research first. That's a great place to start.

    • @davidsmisc1351

      It depends. My collie is on a petty mundane three walks a day schedule in the working week with bigger adventures on weekends. She’s an incredibly chill dog. We don’t ‘hype’ her though. I’m more worried by people playing endless flyball and dog sports who seem to love keeping their collies hyper aroused then complain that they never get tired… oh, they get tired. But owners have to turn them off.

  • @mysuperpack63

    So I have two border collies and I have to say they don't really have any of the flaws you mentioned. Yes they're a bit clingy but I can leave the house and find them happily sleeping in their crates. They have great work ethic but neither of them is obsessed with any particular activity (we do agility and sheep herding). They're rather friendly with other dogs, if they don't like them they would just ignore them and they LOVE people, maybe a little bit too much. They're both mixed lines which means they have both working and show lines in their blood so maybe that's why they're milder and less edgy? Anyway I know some BCs that are exactly like the ones you described and they're not easy to live with at all... so, I don't know, maybe it's luck? Maybe it's all about choosing the right blood lines?

      One of my border collies was similar to yours by the sounds of your description. She loved people, wasn’t edgy, and could have an “off” button, although she was always up for work or training. The border collie I grew up with was pretty stable too. I’ve had 3 others all from different lines and they’ve each had their own set of quirks. I adore the breed though, even the dogs that are quirky. It’s always good to know the “worst case scenario” if someone with less experience is considering the breed. But they are special dogs for sure. And yes, blood lines can be a factor.

    I am the alpha with my dog. She was the best dog ever!
    She always waited until I told her it was ok to get out of my truck. I could leave my door opened and she never bolted. She would sit when we walked to a corner and would wait until I said it was ok to cross. I’d hold a treat in front of her face and she would look the other way until I said ok. I lost her last year. My border collie stares at our cats all the time. We go for five miles walks, well I go for five mile walks. She probably runs about ten miles. However when I get home from a 12 hour shift she harasses me constantly despite having the kids around her all day. It is very sweet, but sometimes I just want to sit down and relax

    • @TheDogVlog
      @TheDogVlog  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sometimes border collies have to be "taught" to relax. I'm currently working on boundary training with my own dogs - you teach them to settle in a specific spot. Sometimes rest is actually what they need if they've had mental and physical activity. And boundary training can actually be a fun and pretty easy game. Basically you pick a "boundary" - a dog bed, a mat, the couch, whatever, and you reward the dog heavily to be on it. At first you can do it as a kind of game. Then while you are sitting and relaxing, you calmly treat the dog while on the boundary at intervals that eventually can get longer and longer. It really helps!

      There are definitely things you can do to help anxiety or OCD. The relaxation protocol is one exercise you can do - there are audio recordings of it online. Also boundary and crate training - making a mat, a crate, or a dog bed into a great place by rewarding the dog when on it. Even noticing stillness and relaxation and rewarding that with a small treat can be helpful.

      Check & see if you have a local dog club ( with agility training). BC's love it & 90% of the dogs there will be BC's or Aussies. The other dogs are there, but not on top of each other. Try to go early to help set up the course. Others are usually there with their dogs, and they tend to play a little before the classes. No pressure on the dogs-they can either mix & play, or just watch. It's non threatening (at least at our club) & should help your pup get used to being around other dogs on neutral territory.

      It depends on the class. Some agility trainers do puppy classes that don't involve jumps or contact equipment. To do a full agility class most dogs should be at least a year to a year and a half old. There is a lot of general training you can do that is not high impact though and will help in all areas. :)

    Well, that got me intrigued, I like a challenge.
    So I got them both, so far doing really well and they became great friends.
    Nowhere near as problematic or hard as presented in these videos. These videos bring a lot of biased information, there are many people that are very nervous and have their own problems and their dogs are like that. Everything triggers them. So don't listen to all of them. Study the breed and make your own mind up.

He did not ever give me an evening off, so keep that in mind. :)

      There are border collie rescues - I would start there, and talk to others locally who own border collies to get their opinions. We got ours from a dairy farmer. His parents are actual working dogs. They're in charge of about 60 cows in the pasture, so he's all BC, no doubt. We live in a rural area, but don't have cattle or sheep. When we're walking & he sees some, he knows he's supposed to do something, but he's not sure exactly what (never had any hearding training), but he's turning into a great agility dog. Also, like she says on "Dog Vlog". you can do a rescue. A lot of people get BC's & don't realize what they're getting into (honestely, we didn't either), so you might be able to help one in need.j

    Border collie. Do NOT get one unless someone is at home with it every day, willing to spend almost every hour playing with it, training it and loving it. As well as exercise, they do need a fair bit but not as much as some people say. They are literally like a small child and are as intelligent. This is not a joke. I had absolutely no idea when I got my BC that she would dominate my life and be so hard work BUT be the most rewarding and wonderful creature I could ever have the luck to share my life with. I never knew that a dog could actually try to imitate speech, knows what you are thinking and feeling and can understand a pretty big vocabulary. Say squirrels or cats to my BC and she is off, looking up a tree for sqirrels, down the road or out the window for the cats. She is adorable and wonderful, when she was a puppy she literally glued herself to my leg and wouldn't leave me alone. I wish at the time I'd understood why, it is the loyalty to humans. She still hates me leaving her alone and goes nuts if I go out for a couple of hours, in a nice way. She is awesome but they are not a dog for the feeble minded or hearted!
