well that makes sense. i never entirely comprehended the difference between both styles. they both look amazing though! however, maybe i'm old fashioned but i find myself significantly more drawn to the classical "russian" technique. it just looks so beautiful and elegant.
+pnoyremix I like elements of the so called "Balanchine" technique however ultimately the Russian style is the perfect unfailing foundation for a ballerina. And I don't agree whatsoever with the statement that Balanchine is the most important technique in ballet.........
+Amy Aguirre In the US it is, I believe that's what she was referring to. If you want to work in American ballet, you had better be well versed in the Balachine method.
I totally agree with the rest before you. Unfortunately, you don't get those lines and that strength from balanchine "technique" which i'd rather call balanchine style instead). All you get from balanchine "method" is somewhat faster legs but also lack of turnout and swelled thighs from the too much crossing of the legs and poor upper body!
Gah, her movement is so gorgeous. I respect Balanchine for his impact on the art but there is nothing more beautiful than a Vaganova-trained dancer. Nothing. The Mariinsky will always be the queen of ballet companies to me.
100% agree. I am an adult beginner and tried some Balanchine port de bras compared to what I usually do in class. The Vaganova method is much lighter, softer and more elegant. Like you are floating. That's what you want to achieve when thinking of becoming ballerina. Then you can experiment with other styles, too.

Ironic that Lera and Balanchine were both trained at the same school and that she has to relearn to capture the 'new' technique. I love her pure classical.
Vaganova is SO beautiful. I am completely over Balanchine. I will choose Vaganova over Balanchine every time. The lines. The grace. Absolutely beautiful to behold.
i relate to valeriia because we are the same body type and flexibility. we both move with the softer vagonova style. :) she makes me feel more confident about myself. im used to dancing slower as well, when i go to other schools the footwork is so fast, i forget the combination too. she's really inspiring to me
Valeria looks amazing in the Sleeping Beauty bits; wish we could see her dancing the full variation. And isn't it interesting that the modern French school adopted the Italian attitude (the one Balanchine wanted also) while the Russian school opted to retain the old French one? She's right, both are beautiful anyway.
I love all the styles. I think it depends on the body and what fits best. It’s also good to drink water for many streams. Russian, French, American, etc.
+xSimpleIsLifex I think (just a guess) that the russians only dance classical ballet with very stiff but beautifully controlled technique whereas a lot of the west have much more fluidity in their movements and is a more modern style. i personally prefer the 'russian' ballet but its up to you :)
Vaganova (typical Russian style) is actually VERY rigid in its methodology. Children are taught very specific placement. Ballet professionals can usually easily identify the differences between styles.
can anyone elaborate on the corrections given at the beginning variation? is the attitude line just shorter, or not so square or something? the version she called 'russian' looked beautiful to me!
yanyuet yes the thing is, the high attitude, is the russian (correct) way of doing an attitude. But because at miami city they use the balanchine style, the teacher shows how thats is suposed to look, the lower 90 degrees one. So both are correct attitudes in different styles. Hope i helped you :) xx
yanyuet The Balanchine attitude, the square one, is the Italian attitude (see the Mercury statue by Bologna from the back - just like Blasis); the Russian attitude is the elongated one.
+yanyuet modern ballet has a different focus, for example classical ballet the focus is being towards the air, so the russian technique is high and extended, but modern ballet the focus is to the ground. so you see there is no real extension and the leg points in the opporsite direction towards the ground, so that's the difference.
So bizarre... So many Russiophiles in the comments section complaining that a company whose rep is primarily Balanchine has the audacity to teach the students in its feeder school - wait for it - Balanchine style/technique. Why go to a video of a style that you hate? There are a million videos posted of Russian dancers training in and dancing Russian technique. Why not restrict your viewing to those videos rather that throwing mud at ballet that you hate?
Does are the differents between the two differents technics that we need to have in view and really true in the differents only is the secuence and variations in the movements that we have at first by school had been taken before
Cecchetti would argue for more of a 90-degree attitude, with a completely vertical torso. Russian lifts higher and extends, torso leans forward. Here's a great illustration to explain: aballeteducation.com/2016/03/28/notes-on-the-styles-of-attitude-derriere/
I have a doubt I used to take ballet very casually few years ago under the Royal School methods but I was never explained the diffences now where I live they teach the Cuban School but I can place the differences with the Russian, Italian and Balanchine
I highly disagree with the notion that if you are trained in the Balanchine style then you can do all other types of ballet. The Balanchine style is just that- a style. When Balanchine trained dancers are performing Balanchine choreography, it is breathtaking. However, watching a dancer that has only been taught a fast paced highly athletic type of ballet try to do something like swan lake? I’m sorry but Russia is unparalleled in that regard.
russian training is just... its so hard but i find it very beautiful. the turnout, the lines, the sharpness, the elegance, the coordination, everything. balanchine is mediocre
Music Lover it depends on personal preference, i feel that balanchine has bigger movement and different lines, vaganova is very precise in detail and requires a lot of flexibility and cecchetti is somewhere between the 2 with a quality of its own
Wong Samantha can't help myself but wonder...whats wrong with the skirt? =) I mean... you don't like the style of the skirt or don't like the fact that a teacher can wear a skirt in general? =)
Wong Samantha a lot of teachers at various ballet schools wear just about anything.. when they teach they dont always dance as the students do so it doesnt matter
Could we just once enjoy the video as a learning tool without getting into an argument about how Russian technique is better than American or that Balanchine's technique makes dancers fat as compared to Mariinsky! Just shut up and try to watch the video! I am so tired of your insults!
KaleaStar Can you close your tendu with two stretched knees? Can you do piqué turns with your heel on the floor in the plié? Two things I never seen a Balanchine dancer do. The end result is always impressive, but the training seems so messy to me.
Treka Double Thats exactly what ballet is all about. You take a human and make them into something that doesn’t look human. In swan lake for example, the ballerina changes into a swan. We study the movements of the animal and transform outselves into it. Thats exactly why I love ballet

me too
Her turnout is unreal!!! So amazing on the attitude.

Well, Russia has always been really attached to the old french technique, but with their own style
0:02 THAT TURNOUT THO

The teacher in this video is Maria Torija and she is my new academy director! I love her!

*students dances beautifully*
*teacher dances in high heels*
And all I can do is the running thingy at the end of the video
Ballet is so elegant and beautiful. LOVE IT
i like her personality, full of life
I love all the styles. I think it depends on the body and what fits best. It’s also good to drink water for many streams. Russian, French, American, etc.
maybe it"s bc i grew up watching the nycb but I love balanchine so much
the french style is purest :)
On 0:02 that teacher said that's Russian ballet.. I wanna ask how do people define whether it is Russian ballet or not?
+xSimpleIsLifex I think (just a guess) that the russians only dance classical ballet with very stiff but beautifully controlled technique whereas a lot of the west have much more fluidity in their movements and is a more modern style. i personally prefer the 'russian' ballet but its up to you :)
+Yannie Lee yes that makes sense 😊
+Yannie Lee Haha, that's not true.
Vaganova (typical Russian style) is actually VERY rigid in its methodology. Children are taught very specific placement. Ballet professionals can usually easily identify the differences between styles.
she is sooo amazing
i'm classically trained and while its fun to sometimes venture into balanchine since it's so dynamic, i like classical best
can anyone elaborate on the corrections given at the beginning variation? is the attitude line just shorter, or not so square or something? the version she called 'russian' looked beautiful to me!

"Balanchine is the most important technique in ballet" well if you think claw hands and ugly attitudes are important then I guess you're right
Can someone tell me where in the video they show the differences?
they don't really i don't think, they're discussing it.
The russian line is imo way better
She's in the Joffrey Ballet company now.
Control the eyelashes?
Yup
Alanah Blue it was to make a point
to make a pointe ;)))

I like Balanchine but I like the elegance of Russian. I also like ballet done to classical music not this modern teen junk.
I´m confused, is the line on an attitude supposed to end at the knee for Balanchine?
Does are the differents between the two differents technics that we need to have in view and really true in the differents only is the secuence and variations in the movements that we have at first by school had been taken before
that was amazing
La buena escuela 🤩👌👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
May I just ask what would a Cecchetti attitude leg look like? Would it be like either the Russian or Balanchine or completely different?
Cecchetti would argue for more of a 90-degree attitude, with a completely vertical torso. Russian lifts higher and extends, torso leans forward. Here's a great illustration to explain: aballeteducation.com/2016/03/28/notes-on-the-styles-of-attitude-derriere/

i agree
beautiful..
I went through this!!!!!!
Still going through it😥
I see black pointe shoes😏
celery lestie naw shit Sherlock
and then theres those of us trained in cecchetti style...
OhLookAWoodenSheep what is better? The pros and cons?
Music Lover theres no real pros and cons just different style really, like how theres no pros and cons of balanchine versus vaganova style
OhLookAWoodenSheep that was because I see a lot of people saying vaganova is better. Maybe the hardest?
Music Lover it depends on personal preference, i feel that balanchine has bigger movement and different lines, vaganova is very precise in detail and requires a lot of flexibility and cecchetti is somewhere between the 2 with a quality of its own
1:27 The teacher really should NOT wear this skirt.
Wong Samantha can't help myself but wonder...whats wrong with the skirt? =) I mean... you don't like the style of the skirt or don't like the fact that a teacher can wear a skirt in general? =)
It's just that she shouldn't wear such a tight dress when she is teaching a student ballet.
Consider that as this is a teen vogue video, she was given it to wear for the occasion.
***** Okok just trying to make light on the comment section.
Wong Samantha a lot of teachers at various ballet schools wear just about anything.. when they teach they dont always dance as the students do so it doesnt matter
demais com certeza

OMG, Okay? Okay. Tank Top
+ThatOneGirl_13 One of the dancers was wearing an Okay? Okay. Tank top
Oh man instructors stilettos really disturbed me.
On MARLEY?!?!?!
Control the eyelashes...
오로라 동작이군(?)
la pronunciación del inglés de la profesora es patética eh xd
If you know how to do the Balanchine technique you can do everything. Heck yeah lets go. I'm a Balanchine dancer
KaleaStar Can you close your tendu with two stretched knees? Can you do piqué turns with your heel on the floor in the plié? Two things I never seen a Balanchine dancer do. The end result is always impressive, but the training seems so messy to me.
Ppendu yes I can. All the people at my school could. I'm not taking dance anymore
KaleaStar Okay, that is good to hear. The first part I mean!
Why is the ballet master dressed like a streetwalker?
Ballet moves look so unnatural, they go against every line of the body, that's why I don't like it
Treka Double Thats exactly what ballet is all about. You take a human and make them into something that doesn’t look human. In swan lake for example, the ballerina changes into a swan. We study the movements of the animal and transform outselves into it. Thats exactly why I love ballet
.
Modern is like modern art, regressive shit!!!
beautiful technique, but she is quite short
arrasam 👏👏👏👊
